At some point of his life, the Joker fell in a vat of chemicals that turned his skin white. He turned to a life of crime that led to his arrest and imprisonment in Arkham Asylum, where he was assigned Dr Harleen Quinzel as his psychiatrist. The Joker ended up seducing her so she would help him escape, and later he brought her to the same vat of chemicals he had fallen into and fully transformed her into her sidekick and girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The two would go together on a thrill-seeking crime spree during which the Joker would share his view of life with Harley. One night, after successfully robbing a bank, the Joker and Harley were attacked by A.R.G.U.S., and Harley was captured by A.R.G.U.S. member Katana and sent to the Belle Reve prison. The Joker would eventually get captured as well and forced to be part of a special task forced led by Rick Flag and supervised by Amanda Waller. Their mission: to cross a portal to another world developed by A.R.G.U.S to establish relationships with its inhabitants in order to take their resources. To ensure their cooperation, the Joker and his teammates had bombs placed inside their necks that would explode if they went rogue.
However, the Joker and his team managed to deactivate the bombs and abandon Flag. They would later join the Empire, one of the two main countries fighting each other in this new world. Thanks to the magical properties of this new world, the Joker gained the power of shapeshifting, and began his own machinations to build a new life there, one where he could be whatever he wanted.
Months later, Harley was also sent to this new world as part of another team that called themselves the Suicide Squad. The Joker used this as an opportunity to give Harley the full "isekai experience". He deposed the ruler of the Empire and tricked the Death King into working for him, while also leading his team formed by Ratcatcher, Enchantress, the Thinker and Killer Croc posing as Katana as a form of revenge against her for being the one who sent Harley to Belle Reve.

Once done, and with all of his former teammates dead or defected, the Joker began preparing the next step of his plan, with the goal of eventually reuniting with Harley.
