This villain was proposed but was rejected by the community for not being heinous enough or lacks what is necessary to be a Pure Evil villain. Therefore, this villain shall be added to our "Never Again List", where proposed villains rejected by the community shall be placed to prevent future proposals of the same evil-doer. They can be proposed again (with the permission of an administrator) if new elements appear in their series that can change their status as non-PE villains.

Any act of adding this villain to the Pure Evil category without a proposal or creating a proposal for this villain without the permission of an administrator will result in a ban.

See, Batsss... We're running out of time. You and me, we need to evolve, and fast, or we'll miss our chance. There is no "by the book" anymore. I threw the damn thing out. Burned it. Every story, every character, one by one... all the cops, all the villains... looking for that breaking point. It has to exist, Bruce. I know it does. The joke too far. Well, tonight I'm going to tell it! I'll shout it from the damn rooftops. Can you hear me, Batman?! Can you?!
~ Joker as he torments the soon-to-be Batman Who Laughs.
HAHAHAHA! You still don't have the guts, Bruce... Do you?! No... Heeeee... It's going to be you and me, TOGETHER FOREV--
~ Joker's last words before getting killed by Batman.

The Joker is an overarching antagonist of the DC Comics universe. He serves as the main antagonist of the 2018 comic book one-shot The Batman Who Laughs #1 and the overarching antagonist of the DC Comics stories featuring The Batman Who Laughs.

He is an alternate version of the Joker who originated from the Dark Multiverse (Earth -22). However, unlike most incarnations, this one succeeded in provoking his rival, Batman, into killing him and become nothing more than a murderer not better than himself, indirectly leading to the creation of one of the most dangerous threats to the entire DC Multiverse.

Biography[]

While little is detailed about the life of the Joker of Earth -22 before Batman's transformation into The Batman Who Laughs, it is likely that it followed much the same path as his original counterpart, but his world was always destined to die as part of the Dark Multiverse. Like his original counterpart, the Joker was a man who became evil supposedly after having one bad day, in which he fell into some chemicals which turned his skin white, his hair green and rendered him insane. He became Batman's archenemy and the two engaged in an endless war against each other in Gotham City. Given the Joker's atrocities, Batman always felt tempted to kill the Joker, but always resisted himself, as he fully knew that such was the Joker's intention.

Eventually, the Joker realized that he was dying from the chemicals that transformed him. Somehow, he also found out that Batman's secret identity was the famous millionaire Bruce Wayne. Desperate to kill Batman before his imminent death, the Joker destroyed countless buildings, killed all members of Batman's Rogues Gallery (including Catwoman, the Penguin, the Scarecrow, Killer Croc, the Ventriloquist and Scarface, and Two-Face) as well as the entire Gotham City Police Department and finally dissolved Commissioner James Gordon with acid, leaving nothing more than his coat and glasses. When Batman came to stop him, the Joker beat up, tied, gagged and drugged Batman with a paralysis poison that affected his body yet not his mind so he could see the chaos the Clown Prince of Crime had created. Mocking Batman for his failure to save his friends and the city, the Joker dressed with Gordon's coat and stated that things would no longer be done "by the book".

To make things worse, the Joker kicked the captive Batman near an alley, reminiscent to the one where his parents were murdered by Joe Chill, where a family was exiting the theater. Despite Batman's pleas to spare the family, the Joker ignored him and shot dead the parents before infecting their daughter with Joker venom, revealing to Batman that he had "Jokerized" many other children he had orphaned and still plans to continue. Finally reaching his breaking point, Batman freed himself from his restraints and attacked the Joker before strangling him to the point of breaking his neck, killing his archenemy and ending his reign of terror once and for all.

Despite his demise, the Joker created a monster that day and was able to defeat his enemy even after death. By killing the Joker, Batman accidentally breathed a toxin within the villain's body, which slowly rendered him insane and transformed him into the very same thing the Joker was: a nihilistic mass murderer and terrorist, who became known as The Batman Who Laughs. The Batman Who Laughs killed all innocents he could find and eventually succeeded in destroying his own universe with the Dark Robins, the orphaned children "Jokerized" by the Joker. Unlike the Joker, however, Batman Who Laughs reached a much different level of destruction when Barbatos made him his second-in-command, becoming one of the most dangerous threats of the multiverse and one of the few beings the Mainstream Batman is willing to kill. Thus, there's one certain thing about the Joker: he is absolutely responsible for turning his Batman into the menace he is today and also indirectly responsible for all the crimes his Batman has committed.

Trivia[]

  • Despite his role in the origins of The Batman Who Laughs, the Joker's appearance in the one-shot was very short in comparison to other incarnations of him and was killed off very early. This makes his actions even worse as he achieved much of an impact in such a short period of time as well as the fact that his actions in his attempts to corrupt Batman are even worse than normal.
  • The Joker's design seems to have been inspired by that of his DCAU incarnation. Fittingly, both versions of the Joker are aware of Batman's secret identity.
  • Though it's stated by Batman that the Joker was dying from the chemicals that transformed him, it's unknown if the mainstream Joker will also suffer the same process eventually. However, this may not be necessarily the case, as the mainstream Joker belongs to the DC Multiverse while Batman Who Laughs' Joker belonged to the Dark Multiverse.
  • It's possible that the Joker killed the Earth -22 counterpart of Harley Quinn, as he killed possibly all members of Batman's Rogues Gallery and while The Batman Who Laughs claimed that his Earth's Harley Quinn was his ally, Raven pointed out that this could be a lie.
  • The Joker of Earth -22 is similar to the Joker of the Injustice series. Both characters have successfully irreversibly corrupted a superhero (with the Injustice Joker's case being Superman) and made long-lasting posthumous effects.
    • Although unlike the Batman Who Laughs, the Injustice Superman still has some remorse for his misdeeds.
