The Joker is the overarching antagonist of season 3 of the 2018 DC live-action TV series Titans. Much like his mainstream counterpart, he is a psychotic criminal and terrorist, who is the archenemy of Batman. He was responsible for paralyzing Batgirl and killing Jason Todd, the second Robin, who would later be resurrected and become Red Hood.

He was portrayed by Mustafa Bulut.

Personality[]

Much like nearly every incarnation of the character, he was a notorious, monstrous, inhumane, and insane psychopath capable of causing unspeakable chaos. Despite his insanity, he is nevertheless a clever and cunning evil genius, who carried out well-executed plans and was skilled at manipulation. This makes the Joker a powerful but dangerous supervillain that was greatly feared, even by powerful superheroes like Wonder Woman, a member of the Justice League.

Biography[]

Background[]

In the past, the Joker started his criminal career while wearing a red hood and assuming the titular title for himself. At some point, he fell into a vat of chemicals that bleached his skin white, his hair dyed green and his lips being stained with a bright red, which gave rise to the dangerous criminal and terrorist known and feared throughout Gotham City.

At some point in his life, the Joker caused an unknown incident that resulted in the deaths of a lot of people and managed to evade capture when Batman and Robin tried to stop him with aid from Wonder Woman. During her time as Batgirl, Barbara Gail Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, was shot in the back by the Joker, causing her to lose one of her legs, leaving her crippled. The Joker then sat beside her as she lay injured until the police arrived and arrested him. The Joker’s attack resulted in Barbara's retirement from her vigilante career, and following her father’s death at the hands of Mr. Freeze, she became the new Commissioner of the GCPD.

Season 1[]

In a fake (but dark) reality conjured by Raven's father Trigon, the Joker had captured Commissioner Gordon and tortured him for three days before murdering him. As Gordon had been an ally of Batman, his murder made the latter snap, turning him into a ruthless, vengeful, and cold-hearted serial killer with a lust for blood, after he had suffered from a series of losses during his years of crime fighting.

Seeking revenge on the Joker for his action, Batman threw him off the roof of a building, causing the Joker's body to be shattered on top of a car while his face got smashed through its windscreen. He was initially thought to be dead, but as his apparent dead body was being wheeled to an ambulance, he suddenly grabbed a female paramedic by the arm, which confirms his survival, though the impact of the fall and the heavy injuries he had sustained left him comatose. As the Joker lay in a hospital while hand-cuffed to his bed, Batman invades the facility and stabbed him to death with a batarang in cold-blood.

Season 3[]

Sometime later in the real world, the Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum and went into hiding at an abandoned amusement park at Gotham Harbor, right after murdering several cops.

Meanwhile the second Robin, Jason Todd, who had become disillusioned with Bruce Wayne over the belief that he had regarded him as a failure and therefore no longer fit to be Robin, sneaks into Arkham Asylum, where he made a deal with Scarecrow of giving him information of Bruce and the Bat Family in exchange for the formula for his fear toxin, which Jason intends to reverse-engineer into an anti-fear drug, as he was desperate to overcome his own fears, after having several nightmares over a traumatic near-death experience while in San Francisco, California.

After successfully creating the drug and providing evidence to Scarecrow that it successfully works, the latter has him track the Joker at the abandoned amusement park so he could prove his fearlessness, but in reality Jason was manipulated into getting himself killed. Calling Bruce Wayne, Jason asked for permission to take down the Joker alone, to which Bruce refused and he has him stand down, but Jason decided to take matters into his own hands; reassuming the Robin mantle, he goes to the amusement park with the anti-fear drug, but was ambushed by the Joker, who beats him to death with a crowbar while laughing maniacally.

Death[]

Just like with Barbara in the past, the Joker sat beside Jason's now-dead body and once again waited for the authorities to arrive and put him back into Arkham Asylum so Batman would not take vengeance out on him but for naught; Grief-stricken over the loss of Jason, Batman broke into the Joker's cell and violently bludgeons him to death in a rage with the same crowbar the Joker used to kill Jason, breaking his moral code in the process.

Trivia[]

This is the first live-action Joker incarnation to be killed by Batman.
Some of the Joker's actions throughout the Titans series are references to two well-known DC comics; His paralyzing of Barbara Gordon references Batman: The Killing Joke, where he invades her apartment and shot her in the spine, leaving her paralyzed and resulting in her retirement as Batgirl and her rise as Oracle. Joker beating Jason Todd to death is a reference to A Death in the Family, where he did beat Jason with a crowbar but didn't kill him with it.
