Jophiel is the secondary antagonist of the 2018 horror film Hellraiser: Judgement.
Biography[]
Jophiel is an Angel in the service of Heaven. She was the angel responsible for the banishment of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. And later when the Great Flood occurred she watched over Noah's family and their descendants. In modern times, she seems to act as a liaison between Heaven and Hell, due to an arrangement between the two.
When Detective Sean Carter, who was also the religious serial killer known as the Perceptor, was caught by The Stygian Inquisition, she intervened. As he was about to be sentenced, she appeared to the Auditor to tell him to release the Detective. When the Auditor reminded her that there is a process to their work, she rebuffed him, claiming that she speaks for the one in charge. Taking her leave, she told him not to give her a reason to return.
After Carter had been caught again, this time by the Cenobite Pinhead, she once again interceded on Carter's behalf. When Pinhead questioned why Heaven would want to spare a sadistic serial killer, she merely stated that there were bigger plans in play. Pinhead then realized that she wanted Carter killing people in order to frighten sinners into turning to God. When he still argued with her about the order of Hell, she merely told him to release Sean or there would be " Hell to pay". When Pinhead seemingly agreed to her demands, she told the Detective to continue his work as the Perceptor, with their blessing.
When Sean angrily demanded to be sent back as he had been forgiven, Jophiel said he hadn't. She told the surprised killer that while his actions worked in their favor, he was still a twisted sadist and he would be judged for his sins eventually, to which the Auditor added that they would be waiting.
After Pinhead returned the angry detective to Earth, he was immediately shot and killed by a fellow detective. Jophiel furiously realized that Pinhead knew that would happen and warned him that he would suffer for it. Pinhead then spitefully ensnared her before torturing and finally killing her. Before she died, she sent an order to Heaven, and Pinhead was banished to Earth as a mere human.
Personality[]
Jophiel comes off as an arrogant being who looks down on all other beings, especially the denizens of Hell. Her concern for humanity is questionable as she was complicit in a plan by God to release a dangerous and irredeemable serial killer, in order for humans on Earth to be scared so that they have no choice but to turn towards God. This makes her more contemptible than demons, who even find the actions of the criminal so vile and appalling, that such a human could not be allowed to escape judgement. Jophiel appears to be willing to allow even to exist, if ordained by Heaven.
