~ Joseph speaking to Elias. |
Joseph is the is the major antagonist of The Ancient Magus' Bride manga series, serving as the main antagonist in season 1 and a minor supporting character in season 2.
He was originally a young graveyard keeper who was often looked down upon by others. When he came across an ancient being known as Cartaphilus, he became desperate to help keep the being well. Eventually, he decided to merge with him, becoming a Sorcerer. He is considered to be an evil mirror counterpart of Chise Hatori.
He is voiced by Ayumu Murase (who also voiced Zerofuku in Record of Ragnarok) in the Japanese version, and Jessie James Grelle in English.
Appearance[]
Joseph has the appearance of a slender, young boy. When he was a graveyard keeper, he had short blonde hair and blue eyes. After merging with Cartaphilus, however, he gained silver long hair, with long bangs that covered his right eye. His eyes were also changed to a duller coloring, but recently, he changed his left eye with Chise's, gaining a green eye.
Personality[]
Joseph was originally a caring, young man, who sought to help those in need and place the dead in eternal rest. However, when he was unable to help Cartaphilus, he broke down and eventually fused himself with him.
Ever since then, Joseph has began to suffer from a bit of amnesia. Because of his death anxiety, he will do anything to keep himself from suffering and feeling pain. Over time, both his sanity and previous morals have eroded to the extent that he values no one's lives and has no issue with using them or inflicting the same pain upon them that he suffers.
Biography[]
Background[]
Joseph was once a regular graveyard keeper, who had lost his parents at a young age. He eventually met a strange-looking being known as Cartaphilus, who appeared to be in poor condition. Joseph did everything he can to help him, but was struggling desperately. Eventually, he decided to merge himself with him, to prevent him from dying.
Joseph would eventually regret this decision, however, as he was left in an immortal state, due to Cartaphilus' ability. As a result, Joseph would go through constant pain, to the point where it drove his sanity away. He would then go out of his ways to commit many crimes, in order to release the curse placed on him for the sake of finally dying. One of the most nasty crimes he committed was his involvement with a couple named Matthew and Mina. At the time, Matthew was desperate to cure Mina of an illness, and came to him for help since he heard he was a sorcerer. He then convinced him to kill the locals cats so that he could make use of their nine lives by adding them to a potion that could cure her. However, it turned out that he was just using it as an opportunity to test his soul manipulation spell, and when they forced Mina to drink it, instead of curing her, it dissolved her body and killed her. This caused Matthew to lose what little sanity he had left, and right afterwards, he's killed by the Cat King for his actions. Sometime later, he visited Renfred and stole his arm, along with the knowledge of how to make a teleportation device.
Plot[]
Joseph attempted to gain Ruth in a graveyard for his experiment and, while trying to silence Alice using his chimera, ended up impaling Chise instead. Elias, in a fit of rage, attacked his chimera, but the rest of them were spirited away by Blue Flame. When they next met, Alice and Renfred shot him with bullets that contained magic to stop regeneration. After failing to gain Ruth, Joseph teleported away from the graveyard.
He later appeared in a dream that Chise stumbled into, lost and confused, where his old personality presumed Chise to be a spirit and attempted to bring her closure. However, he soon suffered from pain that caused Chise to wake up and leave him behind and he awoke without any memory of it. Ashen Eyes then approached him and he decided to use Stella to get close to Chise in the event that he needed to replace his body.
He later orchestrated the kidnapping of two Dragon Whelps and sold one to the auction house in an effort to pay for his expenses, which resulted in Chise obtaining a Dragon's Curse. He then used Stella as a bargaining chip to get Chise to agree to exchange her curse for his, resulting in an experimental exchange of his left eye for hers. He intended to take her cursed left arm as a replacement next, but Chise then entered into his memories once again.
Enraged that he remembered his miserable past, he then attempted to attack her, but Elias, along with several others, appeared to try to stop him and forced him to retreat. Chise gave chase and then told him that she would stop him. In the ensuing battle, he had Chise's eye ripped out of his head and was then put to sleep.
In both the anime and manga, he conceded defeat afterwards, choosing to remain dormant for roughly a century in Elias' well, despite Ashen Eyes insistence.
