You're just like her, you know? You think you're so f-cking smart! You think you're so much better than me, just because you went to college and I'm some night janitor. She could have loved me! Not that anomalous whore.

~ Lowry ranting after being exposed.
Joseph Lowry is an antagonist in the SCP Foundation series, serving as the main antagonist of the article SCP-5002, "A Death in Containment".
Biography[]
Lowry was an SCP Foundation agent serving as a security officer in the low-risk humanoids wing of Site-06 in the United Kingdom, working the night shift from 11:30 pm - 7:30 am. His main job was to make sure all cells on the site were still locked during his rounds, rattling the cell doors every time he went past to see if they opened. The anomalies on his wing included SCP-5002, a reality bender with the ability to make anything she wrote come to life. Lowry supervised D-class testing involving SCP-5002, overseen by Junior Researcher Michael Simpson and Dr. Karen Yau. During his time at the site, Lowry became obsessed with Dr. Yau, who tried to be kind to him by giving him permission to take a ten minute smoke break during his rounds, turning a blind eye to his drinking on the job and glossing over the fact that he only barely passed his psychiatric evaluation. This only fuelled Lowry's obsession with Yau. Lowry also greatly disliked SCP-5002, making sure to give her door an extra loud rattle every time he went past in order to wake her up.
On 14 December 2019, Lowry was doing his rounds and drinking Jack Daniels on his smoke break when, on the way back from his break, he shook the door to SCP-5002's cell and found that it was unlocked. This was because Junior Researcher Simpson, a member of the Serpent's Hand, had unlocked it in an attempt to break her out of the cell. Lowry, drunk on Jack Daniels, entered the cell and began insulting SCP-5002, who retaliated by revealing that she was sleeping with Dr. Yau, which was why she had refused to leave when Simpson gave her the chance. Unfortunately for SCP-5002, Simpson had given her a knife to defend herself with, which Lowry happened to see during the argument. Enraged, he grabbed the knife and stabbed SCP-5002 to death. He then left the scene, knowing that the cameras in the cell wouldn't record the murder because Dr. Yau had doctored them so that they would always show SCP-5002 alone in the cell in order to cover up their affair. He put the knife through the dishwasher to get rid of the blood before arranging to "find" the body at the end of his shift while taking D-4986 out of his cell so that 4986 could serve as a witness, making sure to roll the body over in order to explain away any trace evidence. Only afterwards did Lowry realize that the site would be searched as a result of the murder and his Jack Daniels bottle, concealed elsewhere on the wing, would be discovered, revealing his drinking. With no other alternative, he was forced to plant the bottle in SCP-5002's cell while Dr. Nadine Grossenbacher was examining the body.
Agent Ellen O'Connor was dispatched to Site-06 to investigate the murder and interviewed Lowry about his usual security routines and finding of the body. During one of the interviews, a security officer entered to inform O'Connor that Junior Researcher Simpson had been caught trying to leave the site, at which point Lowry attempted to shift the blame to Simpson by suddenly "remembering" that he had a copy of Dr. Yau's keycard which he could have used to enter the cell (which, unknown to Lowry, he had).
Agent O'Connor became increasingly suspicious of Lowry over the course of her investigation. First, she noticed that the Jack Daniels bottle at the crime scene suddenly appeared in the camera feed after the point where Lowry entered the cell and correctly guessed that he had planted it there to conceal the fact that he was drinking on duty. This led her to discover the doctored cameras while trying to figure out why Lowry hadn't been recorded. She also deduced that Junior Researcher Simpson was in the Serpent's Hand and had unlocked the cell, that Dr. Yau was having an affair with SCP-5002, and that Lowry was in love with Dr. Yau. Based on this information, she was able to come to the conclusion that, since multiple people had heard Lowry rattling the door to SCP-5002's cell after the time where she believed Simpson unlocked the door, he must have known that it was unlocked but had not reported it, because he had used it to enter her cell and kill her for her affair with Yau.
Agent O'Connor summoned all suspects to the common room to reveal the solution. She first confronted Lowry with the evidence that he had planted the Jack Daniels bottle in the cell, which he denied, before exposing Site Director Evelyn May for releasing the anomalous serial rapist Robert Gates from his cell in the hope that he would rape SCP-5002, which even Lowry was horrified by. She then systematically revealed Simpson's involvement with the Serpent's Hand and Yau's affair with SCP-5002, before turning on Lowry again and pointing out that he must have discovered the cell was unlocked, accusing him of the murder. Upon being exposed, Lowry launched into a rant accusing SCP-5002 and Agent O'Connor of looking down on him and declaring that Yau should have loved him before being arrested by Foundation security.
Despite the overwhelming proof of his guilt, Agent O'Connor later recommended to Foundation higher-ups that Lowry be treated leniently because of something she remembered. 150 blank pages had been found in SCP-5002's cell with holes cut into various patterns. Due to a number of unusual events and coincidences surrounding the case which caused it to resemble a mystery novel like those that SCP-5002 had written before she was contained, O'Connor suspected that she may have used her anomaly to orchestrate the events surrounding her murder, writing the story using a grille cipher from the paper she had cut out under the cover of writing a novel as part of controlled testing. This would mean that Lowry was influenced into killing her by her anomaly and was not responsible for his actions. While this could not be proved, it was enough for Agent O'Connor to recommend that Lowry be treated with leniency for his crimes.
