~ Martin to Lillian Forsythe |
Martin was born from Hagland's affair with a Mexican woman named Gabriela, whom he met while smuggling guns through the border. Martin was born in Truth and Consequences, New Mexico, and presumably put up for adoption. He tracked Hagland down by the time Martin grew up and joined his militia, The Horsemen, to get close to him. martin always wanted to impress Hagland, so he rose the ranks of the organization, particularly by the time Hagland was imprisoned for shooting two Virginia state troopers in 2015. Hagland was to be executed in 2018, and as his date was approaching fast, Martin hoped to both impress Hagland and free him with a hostage crisis at the ADLC law firm, which was legally fighting the militia for years. Two members, Dalton McCann and Jasper Talbott, military vets with a history of bank robbery before their militia activities, were recruited as his backup.
Martin lied he wanted a consultation under the alias "Roland Cole", so he scheduled an appointment. The day of the standoff, he ordered McCann and Talbott to kill the guards, who they only restrained out of not wanting to be killers, then accompanied Martin to the fourth floor, where the offices were. Firing their assaults rifles in the air, The Horseman took several people hostages, including Agent Matthew Simmons' wife Kristy, and Martin went on a soliloquy about them all "making history". They wired the office with C4 explosives to prevent anyone entering, then took everyone's cellphones. When Steven Onishi lied to try and keep his, Martin beat him in a rage, with McCann needing to physically stop him from killing Steven. Martin took the firm's boss, Lillian Forsythe, aside and told her one of her employees needing to communicate with the hostage negotiators for him and his accomplices. Lillian, a woman of color picking up on what militia he works for, refused to work with his demands, so Martin shot her. Sending Lillian down the elevator to the FBI agents when she was dead, he called her phone and told the agents he wanted Hagland released, or he'd kill hostages every fifteen minutes. He follows through by shooting Ian Watt and sending him down the elevator as well.
Kristy hid a phone to communicate with the agents, revealing all their faces with video feeds. When her colleague, Erol Alton, finds out and fights with her, Martin barges in and prepares to kill Erol after finding the phone, believing he had it. Kristy admits the truth, so Martin punches her and prepares to shoot on live video feed. The agents tell her to reveal, first, that McCann and Talbott didn't kill the guards, but to split their partnership, that Martin is Mexican-American. Talbott is furious and lobs a racist slur at Martin, resulting in him shooting Talbott out of spite. Agent Matthew Simmons went into the office alone and engaged in a shootout with Martin and McCann, killing McCann in the process. Martin and Simmons get into fisticuffs while fighting over the bombs' detonator, and when Simmons is near choking Martin to death, Kristy shouts at him not to. Martin is arrested and incarcerated, and the hostages are safely rescued.
