I understand why you're here. I'm not giving you the satisfaction of killing me. Oh... You're not who I was expecting. I'm surprised there's more than one of you left. (Zero: More than one?) You don't know...? Well, it's no matter. We made a lot of mistakes during the war. (Zero: Any last words?) I regret the pain I've caused through you. Farewell.
~ Josh Rose's final conversation with Zero.

Josh Rose is a supporting antagonist in the 2019 indie action-platformer video game Katana Zero, serving as the main antagonist of the mission "Murdower Hotel".

He is a 56-year-old tech billionaire, who is secretly tied to the Chronos and NULL project to an extent. However, after the withdrawal, Josh seems to be feel remorse for the things he has done.

Biography[]

Past[]

As his assassination dossier defines, Josh Rose is a tech billionaire who serves as the chairman of New Mecca Foundation for Post-War Reconstruction (NMFPR), who has secretly involved Leon von Alvensleben's NULL and Chronos projects. It is ambiguous how and what capacity he was involved the project though, but it's obvious that he knows enough the true nature of the project, as he knows who the Dragon is, and Leon mentions him as the "thief", which is possibly for Josh stealing Chronos from him.

Assassination[]

Josh Rose is the first onscreen assassination target given to Zero by the psychiatrist, giving him a dossier that defines Josh Rose, which Zero later destroys after reading. Upon learning his location, Zero heads to the Murdower Hotel, and kills Josh Rose's men who attempt to take Zero down. After killing the whole crew, Zero reaches to the hotel balcony and encounters a smoking Josh Rose, admitting his fate. Zero can either kill him by throwing any object at him, or have a conversation with him before attempting to kill him. If he chooses the latter, Josh Rose says that he would not give the Dragon the satisfaction of killing him. He looks back to Zero and gets surprised that he is not the one Josh expects, as he excepts the original Dragon. He admits that they made lots of mistakes during the war, and he feels regret for every pain he caused through people. He later bids farewell and flings himself off the hotel balcony.

Josh Rose is mentioned once more by Leon von Alvensleben's cassette tapes during the Slaughterhouse mission, with Leon defining him as a thief. It is most likely that Josh Rose stole Chronos from him and was skilled enough to survive Leon's obstacle course.

Trivia[]

  • Justin Stander, the game's lead developer, states that Josh Rose's appearance was based on Nathan Bateman from the 2014 film Ex Machina.
