Villain Overview

If you come for the queen, you better not miss. That goes for all of you losers. You're all useless and weak.
~ Joy to Tylor and the Fear Co scarers.

Joy is a minor antagonist in Season 2 of the 2021 Disney+ series Monsters at Work, a sequel series to the 2001 Pixar film Monsters, Inc.

She is a salamander-like monster who works as a scarer for Fear Co. while under Johnny Worthington III's control over the company, which is a huge rival to Monsters, Inc.

She is voiced by Janelle James in her first villainous role.

Personality[]

At first, Joy seems rather relaxed and friendly, often treating others with a degree of warmth. However, she is eventually shown to be arrogant and competitive, often treating any monster she deems better than her like utter dirt, and being quite mean to her coworkers. For this reason, the other scarers at Fear Co. don't like her very much.

Like Declan, she is shown blindly following Johnny's evil instructions as she is tasked to guard Fear Co.'s receiving station when it is filled with mixed energy with Declan and Skyler.

Appearance[]

Joy resembles a salamander with six limbs. She has blue skin and a white underside, and she has a hair-like membrane atop her head. She is also quite tall.

Biography[]

In the episode "Opening Doors", Joy is initially introduced as she exits the Scare Floor at Fear Co., where her supervisor, Johnny Worthington III, presents her to Tylor Tuskmon. She greets him warmly and expresses her hope that he might consider joining Fear Co. as a scarer, following Johnny's job proposal; however, Tylor ultimately opts not to accept the offer.

In "Field of Screams", Joy takes on the role of pitcher for Fear Co., utilizing her fire-breathing abilities to enhance her team's performance. When one of her teammates, Skylar, is rendered unconscious, Tylor is brought in to replace him, but Johnny appoints Tylor as the pitcher instead, leading to Joy's removal from that position, which she accepts without protest. Her team goes on to win the match.

In "Descent into Fear", Joy appears on the Fear Co. laugh floor to welcome Tylor to the organization. However, a more aggressive aspect of her personality emerges when Tylor begins to catch up to her in the scream rankings; she becomes hostile and starts belittling her colleagues, inciting their anger as they begin to wager on Tylor to surpass her. Tylor eventually does so when he is compelled to scare a child he previously knew during his time as a jokester at Monsters, Inc., leaving Joy quietly astonished.

In "Powerless", she is assigned with Declan and Skyler to oversee Fear Co.'s receiving station, which is inundated with mixed energy. After MIFT incapacitates Declan, Duncan disguises himself as Declan to relieve Joy and Skyler of their duties. When Joy grows suspicious, Fritz intimidates her into leaving the area. Later, she is seen with her colleagues watching a live news report as Tylor and Val demonstrate the advantages of Laugh Energy to Monstropolis, prompting Joy to smile. Her fate following this event remains uncertain.

Trivia[]

  • Her name is ironic because she terrifies children rather than delighting them. Her later cruel personality, which doesn't bring any joy to her co-workers, also recalls the irony of her name.
  • She's the first villainous antagonist of the Monster Inc. franchise to be female.
  • Joy shares several similarities with Randall Boggs:
    • Both have a reptilian appearance along with six limbs and an upright stance.
    • Both have a similar personality, along with being competitive, spiteful, irritable, selfish, and abusive.
    • Both tend to pick on their co-workers who they think are inferior to them while masking it under a veneer of faux chattery and camaraderie.
    • She has a rivalry and jealousy towards Tylor who is better at the job she does, similar to Randall with Sulley.
  • Joy shares her name with the protagonist from the Inside Out franchise, another Pixar-related work.
