~ An infected Joyce to Adaline. |
Joyce Pratt is a supporting protagonist turned main antagonist in Crossed: Family Values. She is the second main antagonist of the second volume, after Joe Pratt.
Originally the matriarch of the Pratt family, Joyce was a caring and kind woman who loved her children, but was too afraid to stand up to her husband's abuse that he inflicted on his daughters. After the events of C-Day, Joyce would continue living in fear of Joe until she witnessed him rape their oldest daughter Adaline, and decided to save her by infecting herself with the C-virus to kill Joe. Though she succeeded in saving Adaline from Joe, Joyce would become a homicidal sadist who wanted to infect the rest of her living children to start an incestuous family. She became a nemesis to her children, and was finally put down by Adaline in the last issue.
Appearance[]
Joyce Pratt is depicted to be in her late 40's to early 50's with long blonde hair who dresses modestly, usually wearing an apron over a t-shirt and jeans, as well as small earrings.
After becoming infected however, Joyce would either wear much more provocative/seductive clothing, such as corsets and thongs, a suit made with the skin of a Crossed man, or sometimes being almost entirely naked.
Personality[]
Before becoming infected with the C-Virus, Joyce Pratt was shown to be a kind woman who deeply cared for her entire family, but was also shown to be far too scared to confront her husband about the abuse he inflicted on her five daughters, until she finally saw the extent of his abuse when he raped Adaline and finally stood up to him so Adaline could save her remaining family.
After infecting herself with the C-Virus, Joyce turned into a homicidal psychopath who was obsessed with reuniting with all of her children, either by killing all of them or infecting them to join her Crossed incestuous family.
History[]
Past[]
Little of anything is known for sure about Joyce's past before the C-Virus pandemic, only that at some point in her life she met her husband Joe, the two got married, and they had ten children together in total, all likely without her consent. Joyce and Joe would find success as race horse breeders, and the Pratt family became known for having some of the best horses in Lincolnton.
Joyce's marriage with Joe would become weakened after he would start abusing their children and raping their daughters, most notably Emily. According to an infected Joseph Pratt Jr., he would participate in raping Emily alongside Joe, and stated that he pictured Adaline when committing the act. Randy, an employee who worked for Joe on the ranch, also knew about his abuse, stating that the "boss man" was sleeping with his daughters. Due to this statement by an infected Randy, it's implied that Joe was not only raping Emily, but possibly having sexual relations with his other daughters except his oldest Adaline.
Despite witnessing the abuse and knowing that Joe was raping their daughters, Joyce was too scared to confront him and would ignore this, or would do as Joe told her to do. Though she loved her children dearly, she had intrusive thoughts of her own before becoming a Crossed herself. In issue #5, she tells her infected son Joseph, Jr. that she would have dreams of him "stuffing" her while Joe went off to rape Emily, thus indicating her intrusive thoughts were incestuous due to Joe not looking at her anymore and abusing their daughters.
Issue #1[]
Adaline Pratt is the oldest daughter of Joe and Joyce Pratt, living with them and nine other siblings. After 17 years of keeping quiet due to being afraid of her father, Adaline asks Joe to privately meet her in the kitchen where she tells him to stop raping her sister Emily, and Joe punches her to the ground for simply asking him to stop. Joyce steps in to see what's going on, but then Joe orders her to leave before he mercilessly beats his daughter with a belt.
Outside, the horses are all suddenly spooked by something and one of their workers is injured after being kicked in the chest. Infuriated at the abuse, Adaline gets her gun from her closet initially intending on killing her father, but then stops her plans once she sees The Crossed crowded outside their ranch in a giant mob as far as 100 yards (300 feet).
Joe gathers all his workers and sons to start firing into the crowd of maniacs and during the madness, he realizes that while they're not being attacked by some violent cult, he believes that the end of days has begun with a pestilence designed to kill all the sinners of the world.
When Adaline sees Emily run into the barn, she quickly finds that she's been infected and the Crossed Emily nearly kills Adaline until Joe shoots her in the head, and takes the rest of his living family far away from their home. Adaline briefly forgives her father for seemingly caring enough to save her, something she later laments as selling her soul for cheap.
Issue #2[]
One year later into the apocalypse, Joe has started his own base of survivors which he's dubbed "New Paradise", where he quickly learned everything he could about the crossed, allowed travelers to join their home, and hanged anyone accused of "dissention". One of the other things Joe focused on was the repopulation of the human race and to do this, Joe personally sought out to impregnate as many women as he could, including his underaged daughter Kayleen without anyone else knowing.
In order to study the crossed, Joe has captured one of the crossed as it was chasing a group of survivors by shooting it in the leg and then dismembering it to collect the fluids for study. Joe tells Adaline and her two oldest brothers, Joseph and Matthew, to scout out the areas surrounding the camp to see if any Crossed are too close to their home. While outside though, she realizes that the morbid rhyme that the Crossed man they held captive always repeated meant that Joe was raping his daughters once again and she rushes back.
After arriving, Adaline finds Joe sleeping with a woman named Hannah and forces Joe at gun point to take her to Kayleen where he reveals to her that while she was gone, Kayleen was infected by the Crossed.
Issue #3[]
Joe explains to Adaline that while she was gone, Kayleen had somehow managed to get infected, and they tied her to the same board as the previous Crossed man. Adaline insults Joe and he once again abuses her by slamming her head against a wall and then locks her inside a cell. Adaline tries to convince her mother that what Joe is doing is abhorrent, but Joyce is still disillusioned by her religious faith and fear of her husband, attempting to justify his actions saying God personally chose him to lead the new world.
Meanwhile, a large group of The Crossed has used their tracking skills from a pile of the Pratt's horse's dung to make their way to New Paradise. Adaline tells her father that she wishes the incoming horde kills them all as it is no paradise at all, just "the insanity of a sick old f*ck who likes to screw little girls", and Joe punches her in the face once again. Adaline laughs at her father and Joe suspects she's possessed by the Devil, and Adaline questions if that is why he's never tried to rape her or because he knew she's the only one who would fight back against him.
Out of pure spite, Joe proceeds to rape Adaline and tells her that she's not her daughter and plans on using Crossed blood to "reveal her true form", but Joyce luckily discovers what Joe has done to their oldest daughter and helps her outside of the cage before locking herself and Joe back inside. Joe demands that she unlock the cage in order for him to help the others survive, but Joyce finally stands up to him and tells Adaline to save their remaining family before infecting herself with Crossed blood and kills Joe by raping him with a butcher knife attached to her groin and stabbing him in the head.
Adaline, still dazed and traumatized, wanders out into New Paradise and she's nearly killed by one of The Crossed until she's saved by one of the few survivors. Before leaving, Adaline goes back to Kayleen and discovers that she had disemboweled herself in order to eat her own baby, and Adaline shoots her sister to put her out of her misery. Adaline says that she lost her faith that day, noting that if she didn't she would've willingly allowed herself to die that day, but chooses to live for her remaining family.
Issue #4[]
Two months after the massacre at New Paradise, Adaline's group spots several Crossed walking together and they've decided to refer to them as "Gaggles" when there's anywhere between five to fifteen of them. Adaline says that this group has gone so long without seeing someone uninfected, they've gone into a stupor and don't even care when one of the Crossed repeatedly stomps on the head of another Crossed, despite their love of violence. After one of them notices Adaline's group hiding in a ditch however, all of them immediately return to their psychotic manners and charge towards them, though they're all killed off rather easily.
After spending the night to rest, Adaline decides that the group is going to Nebraska in order to meet up with her brothers Joseph and Matthew, then set out once everyone is ready. On their way however, Adaline's group are suddenly ambushed by three cars worth of people who drive circles around them. Harris introduces himself as their leader and orders all of them to get off their horses and surrender their guns to them, clearly intending to rob them. Unbeknownst to Harris and the thieves, the group's sharpshooter and Adaline's youngest sister Merilly is hiding in a wagon and on Adaline's orders, she shoots Harris in the throat but he doesn't die.
This starts a shootout between the groups where several horses and one of Adaline's friends are unfortunately shot in the process, and Harris eventually gives up his plans on robbing them, instead opting to kill Adaline and the rest of her group for ruining his plans. At one point, Adaline attempts to kill Harris herself in order to save the injured members of her group, but her horse is shot in the leg and Harris nearly runs her over until Adaline's brother Matthew suddenly arrives and kills Harris.
Adaline's group then murders the rest of Harris' thieves to avenge their wounded and fallen. Adaline reunites with her brother and relishes the moment, because she knows that she'll soon have to address the group's injuries including her own broken leg, Mark and half the horses now dead, and Adaline blames herself for the whole mess.
Issue #5[]
Two days after reuniting with Matthew, Adaline's group has now set up camp where Hannah gives birth to her first child, and Kate isn't far behind from giving birth to her own. Adaline steps outside to check on Liza, who's mental health has been declining ever since her husband Mark was murdered and her daughter was murdered by the Crossed several years beforehand, growing more and more paranoid and doubtful about their own survival.
Worried about her other brother, Adaline and Matthew set out to try and find Joseph near the remains of New Paradise where they find a large monument of bodies impaled on rebar poles made by The Crossed five days later, showing they're still in the area. Unbeknownst to Adaline and Matthew, Joseph has already been captured by The Crossed and forcibly infected. The leader of this group is then revealed to be Joyce Pratt, who somehow managed to survive the New Paradise massacre after infecting herself, and the two have sex as the rest of the group celebrates with an orgy.
The next day, Adaline and Matthew discover vultures eating the remains of Joseph's horse, so they begin searching the area for nearby Crossed which they find rather quickly. Knowing he's most likely infected since he wasn't killed with his horse, Adaline knows she has to kill her brother now and as Matthew deals with another group of The Crossed, she goes into the woods until she comes across Joyce's camp sight where she finds her father's mutilated body impaled on a tree. Joyce and Joseph reveal themselves to Adaline, wanting her to join their incestuous infected family, though Adaline only responds by setting the two ablaze with a molotov cocktail. After leaving with Matthew, Joyce is shown to somehow survived once again whereas Joseph didn't, though she now carries his severed head with her and plans to reunite the family no matter the cost.
Issue #6[]
Upon returning to the hospital, Jethro tells Adaline that not only is Kate has been in labor for the past two days and Hannah is worried that if this continues, they might have to perform a c-section Kate would most likely die from since none of them are doctors. Kate wakes up and tells Adaline that if it comes to a last minute decision, to save her baby instead of her. Unbeknownst to everyone, Joyce has been used her tracking skills in order to find her children and is bringing a large army of Crossed with her.
Just as Kate's contractions start again, Liza has a complete mental breakdown as she thinks she spots a group of The Crossed and fires at nothing, and Jack tells her to go inside to eat something and get some rest. However, Liza instead grabs hold of Adaline's youngest brother Eli and goes into hysterics as she believes it's no use to fight or hide from The Crossed anymore and she murders both Jack and Eli, before being murdered by Adaline herself. Matthew then helps her bury the bodies outside, and Adaline promises to Matthew that not another Pratt family member will die while she's around. Joyce's army gets closer and closer as she sings about how she's going to reunite with her "babies".
Issue #7[]
Later that night, Merilly notices the nearby town has been burned to the ground from the hospital's roof and Joyce reveals herself to her daughter, only to be shot in the shoulder when Merilly panics and goes to warn the others. Adaline has Jethro go and get the horses as well as Kate, who has finally delivered her baby Claire, then puts their lanterns on their horses and sets them running away from the horde of Crossed to try and trick them as they escape through the sewers. Joyce however doesn't fall for this and follows them into the sewers, infecting Jethro in the process.
The now infected Jethro corners Hannah, Kate and Merilly, but since Kate is still too weak to move after giving birth, she chooses to shoot herself so she doesn't suffer. As the rest of the group runs, Jethro and Joyce briefly capture Merilly, but Adaline quickly kills Jethro, then is forced to amputate Matthew's leg with an axe just before Joyce bites him so he doesn't get infected. After killing her own infected mother, Adaline ties up Matthew's severed leg with some rope and leads everyone away until they come across an untouched subdivision where everyone can quietly live together like a family once again.
