JUAN BORGIA to his sister LUCREZIA BORGIA

Juan Borgia is a main character of the 2011 Showtime series The Borgias. He is the second son of Rodrigo Borgia and his mistress Vanozza dei Cattaneo. Juan is the younger brother of Cesare and the elder brother of Lucrezia and Gioffre.

Biography[]

When first seen Juan is on the streets of Rome. He trades insults with and allows himself to be drawn into a fight with a young Roman to defend himself from xenophobic attacks. Juan managed to injure another man who joined in on the fighting but was soon knocked down by the Roman he had started the fight with. This Roman was about to deliver the coup de grace but was stopped at the last minute by Cesare.

After his father was elected Pope, Juan was named Gonfalonier of the Church. However, Juan proved to be incompetent in this role. The Papal armies were defeated by the French, who already outnumbered them. Although Juan was willing to sacrifice himself and lead his troops to death, he only survived because Lucrezia intervened on his behalf with the King of France. Juan backed down, realizing that the prospect of his death would devastate his sister. This outcome was a result of their father's misplaced confidence in the Papal army

Juan's internal struggles fueled growing tension with his siblings, despite his longing desire to fit in with them. He felt increasingly threatened by Cesare's superior military and leadership skills, and perceived Cesare's attempts to usurp his position. When Juan's actions endangered Lucrezia's child, Cesare exploited the situation, fulfilling his long-held desire to kill Juan out of jealousy to take control of the papal army. This contradicted their father's advice to help Juan through his dark night; instead, Cesare chose to eliminate him.

Trivia[]

  • Historically, It was Juan's brother, Cesare, who contracted syphilis, had an affair with Joffre's wife, Sancha, and killed Lucrezia's lover, Paolo. However, in the show, all of these actions were pinned on Juan to refrain from making Cesare seem unlikeable to the audience.
  • He was the truth teller of the family and the one who realizses the hypocrisy in it. In Season 2, Juan raises doubts about Cesare's love for him and hints to his father in the episode 2x08 that he suspects Cesare is plotting against him. Regrettably, Rodrigo dismisses Juan's apprehensions. Ultimately, Juan's suspicions prove to be well-founded. As his sanity deteriorates, he begins to suspect that Cesare and Lucrezia are engaged in a secret romance. He even goes as far as implying that Cesare could be Giovanni's biological father, although he is incorrect in this assumption. Nevertheless, he accurately discerns the incestuous implications in their relationship, being the only family member to openly recognize and address the issue. He subtly hints at his desire to be part of an incestuous triangle involving them.
