Juan García Cortez is a major character in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the fourth installment of the Grand Theft Auto series.
He is a corrupt Central American colonel with diplomatic immunity stationed in Vice City, Florida with his daughter Mercedes. By 1986, Cortez comes to work with career criminal Tommy Vercetti, who helps him to deal with the Secret French Service, just as he tries to topple down Ricardo Diaz and take over as Vice City's drug kingpin.
He was portrayed by Robert Davi, who also played Jake Fratelli in The Goonies, Franz Sanchez in Licence to Kill, Robert Masterson in The Taking of Beverly Hills, Hans Zarba in Son of the Pink Panther, Rtas 'Vadum in Halo, Alejandro Sosa in Scarface: The World Is Yours and Goran Vata in The Expendables 3.
Biography[]
Colonel Juan García Cortez was born somewhere in Central America, where he survived thirty coups and nine death sentences. Eventually, he married an unnamed woman in his home country, and had a daughter with her, named Mercedes. Unfortunately, Cortez's wife died, where afterwards Cortez started doing business in drug trafficking.
In 1986, Cortez moved to Vice City, Florida, where he spent most of his time on his yacht. At a party on his yacht, Cortez meets Forelli Family member, Tommy Vercetti, who he soon starts to work with. At first, Cortez orders Tommy to kill his former right-hand man, Gonzalez, to which afterwards Cortez has Tommy steal missile technology chips from the French government, protect allied drug lord, Ricardo Diaz from a deal gone wrong, steal a tank, help him leave Vice City, and finally look after his daughter, Mercedes.
Personality[]
Despite being a highly dangerous drug dealing lord, Cortez is extremely admirable and also a widow. He looks after his daughter, who is an adult film actress, as well as treating Tommy Vercetti, a cold-blooded career criminal, with a lot of respect, compared to other mission givers, such as Ricardo Diaz, Kent Paul and Sonny Forelli, who never treat Tommy with respect, with Tommy still doing their missions.
