“ | I started at the bottom, as a Colt for my father and believe me, I trained ten times as hard as my sisters. But I earned my title fairly by being tougher and hungrier than anybody else. | „ |
~ Juliet Chau |
Juliet Chau, better known as Baron Chau, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside The Master) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
She is one of the Barons that rules in the apocalyptic wastelands known as the Badlands. She controls the Fox Territory, which makes her the Baron of Cogs, human slaves. This makes her the archenemy of the Widow, who wishes to put an end to the Cog slave trade.
She was portrayed by Eleanor Matsuura, who also played Black Deer in Blood Moon. As a child, she was portrayed by Anika Nazareno.
Appearance[]
As the Baron of the Fox Territory, Chau is always seen wearing white or ivory clothing, primarily in the form of her white fur coat or robes. Her style of clothing is very thick and fancy but is not particularly loose so that she will be able to jump into combat at any point. During her war with the Widow, Chau begins wearing a combat suit made of white leather, similar to that of her Clippers but with a more intricate design. After she is defeated and goes into hiding, she wears a new combat suit that is designed in the same way as the previous one but is silver rather than white.
Personality[]
Juliet Chau is perhaps the most cruel and sadistic of all the Barons, rivaling the likes of Baron Quinn. As the Baron of Cogs, Chau's entire way of life comes from benefitting off of slaves that live in her territory. She expresses extreme contempt for Cogs, treating them the worst out of any Baron. This makes her the biggest ideological opponent to the Widow, as the Widow wishes to free all Cogs. Due to the Widow once being a Cog in Chau's territory, Chau refuses to see her as anything other than one, showing that unlike other savage Barons like Quinn, Chau doesn't believe that Cogs can rise to power in the Badlands, and instead thinks that they should remain in servitude.
Chau is shown to respect her mother and father, but it is unclear whether or not this is due to her genuinely loving them, or if instead she simply enjoys their high status in the world. Furthermore, Chau does not have any care for her brother Gaius, simply because he does not support the Cog slave trade. The idea that she may only care about their status and not them as people is supported by her laughing when she believes that Gaius killed their mother, but when she learns her mother was killed by Tilda, a former Cog, Chau showed outrage over this due to the idea of a Cog killing someone in her family being disgraceful to her rather than simply being upset that her mother was dead, as Chau truly saw her family as above others in the world.

Powers & Abilities[]

- Archery: Chau was shown to be a capable archer, and taught her Clippers the same skill, making the crossbow the signature weapon of the Clippers in her territory.

Quotes[]
“ | This isn't about commerce, it's about a way of life. One that my ancestors helped build. We've kept the Badlands running smoothly for over a century by providing a labor force. And yet you have chose to wage a war against that reality. Your vision of a Cog free world is not only dangerous, but a threat to my very existence. | „ |
~ Chau's megalomaniacal worldview. |
“ | Poor Gaius, still fraternizing with the help. | „ |
~ Chau insulting her brother. |
“ | Chau: Growing up, every summer Gaius would pick a different Cog girl to be his own personal project. Always some pretty young thing, so grateful for his kindness. The Widow: Got to hell. |
„ |
~ Chau taunting the Widow about her relationship with Gaius. |
“ | Tilda: You want to torture me, fine. But let him go he's your brother. Chau: You overestimate my fondness for my sibling. My brother's fate was sealed the second he murdered our mother. Lucky you, get to watch! |
„ |
~ Chau professing her willingness to kill her own brother. |
“ | You're gonna die like you lived Minerva, a broken little bitch! | „ |
~ Chau's final words. |
Trivia[]
- Chau alludes to the White Bone Demoness from the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, of which Into the Badlands is loosely based on.
- The abandoned amusement park that Chau uses as secret base is known as "Iron Fan" which is likely a reference to the character of Princess Iron Fan from Journey to the West.
- Chau's status as Baron is recognized by all of the other Barons in the Badlands, despite her being a woman. This suggests that the other Barons not recognizing the Widow as a true Baron is not due to her being a woman, but instead due to the fact that she assassinated her husband rather than defeating him in single combat.
- This is further supported by the fact that both Chau and Baron Jacobee are both stated to have inherited their Barony from their parents, and did not kill them in order to obtain it, showing that had the Widow's husband died in battle, her becoming the Baron of his territory would have been recognized.
