Jumanji is the titular main antagonist of the franchise of the same name.
It is a sentient cursed African board game found by a young boy named Alan Parrish and his friend, Sarah Whittle in 1969. After rolling the game’s dice, the two inadvertently start playing the game, leading to Alan being sucked into the game’s world.
Decades later, the game is discovered by Judy and Peter Shepherd, the latter of which rolls a five, which releases the game’s contents into the real world.
Appearance[]
As a board game, Jumanji is a rectangular brown box with African iconography and the word “Jumanji” in bold lettering on the cover. Inside of the game lies the game board, as well as cards listing the instructions for the game. Additionally, the box holds cupboards with dice and playing pieces based on African animals.
As a video game, Jumanji is a light grey console skin to an Atari 2600. The console holds a cartridge with the word “Jumanji” on it. Additionally, the game’s starting screen also displays “Jumanji” while also showing images of African imagery like the board game’s cover.
Personality[]
At its core, Jumanji is a destructive, yet honorable being that desires nothing more than to be played, even if its game puts the lives of its participants in jeopardy. It has been shown to draw attention to itself upon detecting potential players, such as making a drum sound to alert the Shepherd siblings of its presence and even transforming into a video game after Alex Vreeke showed disinterest in it as a board game. Whether inside or outside of its game world, players, regardless of age, are given no mercy from Jumanji’s obstacles, facing lethal foes such as lions, elephants and the nefarious big game hunter Van Pelt.
Despite this, Jumanji is capable of nobility. Once the players complete its game, Jumanji reverses all of the damage wrought by it or its obstacles, even rewinding time from before Alan got trapped within its game. It is also enraged by cheaters and punishes them by transforming them into animals, such as when it turns Peter into a monkey after making an attempt to cheat.
