Jun Shirakawa (白川 純 Shirakawa Jun) is a major antagonist in the manga series Juujika no Rokunin. He was once a friend of Shun Uruma before mistakenly believing that Shun was responsible for raping his sister. After being gaslighted and indoctrinated by Kyou Shigoku for years, he eventually became a member of the Revolution Club and still wanted to get revenge on Uruma as a result of becoming obsessed with Kaname. He serves as a supporting protagonist in the Madoka arc, a major antagonist in the Kyou arc, the overarching antagonist of the Nagai, Gonda, and Lost Memories arcs, & the main antagonist of the Jun arc.
Appearance[]
Jun Shirakawa is a tall and lean teenager with messy black hair and a mole on his chin. He usually dressed up in a white-collared shirt and black slacks.
As an adult, his hair became less messy and becoming more straight-centered. He is mostly seen wearing a long coat, a turtleneck shirt, baggy pants, and sneakers.
Personality[]
When Jun was younger, he was shy and less easy-going than he was when he was a teenager. However, as a teenager, he is a friendly and sociable, yet cocky teenager who enjoys befriending people, particularly Uruma. He and his sister occasionally fight (in a playful way). Despite this, he is also shown enjoying shipping Uruma and Kaname together as he feels that they are a perfect match together.
However, that all changes when he discovers that Kaname was raped one day (by Madoka Hiro, one of Uruma's and Kaname's bullies). This event, coupled with Uruma's and Kaname's unwillingness to disclose the truth, and him meeting Shigoku Kyou, changed him into a paranoid and angry psychopath who swears vengeance on Uruma for raping his younger twin sister.
Further to his psychopathic side, Jun can also be cold and uncaring, as he initially enjoys seeing Uruma and his younger brother suffer, even wishing that Uruma would soon understand how the latter would understand how it would affect him later on. However, his personality changes once again as he becomes more remorseful and less mentally stable after realizing the damage he caused to Uruma. Because of this, coupled with not being able to leave the game, he displays a hopeful attitude that once Uruma wins a match of Rock, Paper, Scissors that he and his friend were playing, both he and Uruma would be allowed to go home without any further consequences. However, this would eventually lead to his younger sister's death when Momoki chops off both her right arm and her left leg after Jun lost to Uruma twice in their game.
Jun can also be aggressive as he attempts to punch Shigoku Kyou in retaliation for killing his younger sister (only to be restrained by Andou). Furthermore, he becomes very cowardly as he fears dying in the game that he and Uruma were playing.
After the events of the confrontation, Jun can be seen checking up on Uruma through Andou's phone, much to the confusion of Kitami, who later informs Uruma of the situation while coincidentally, a girl by the name of Kaname Matsushima (having the same face as Kaname Shirakawa, who was killed five years ago) came to see an incurable disease. At the same time, Uruma receives a call through Andou's phone once again, prompting him to meet Jun at a hotel. Although Jun seemed to have recovered from the trauma of losing his sister, yet still very vengeful towards Momoki and Kyou for what they did to Kaname, Uruma doubs him as be believes that it is a trap (confirmed when Uruma revealed that when the police came to arrest him six years ago, Andou was escorting Jun out of the scene to avoid getting caught as Kyou looked back at Uruma with a smirk, hinting at his further brainwashing of Jun into the monster that he is currently). In addition, Jun has developed an infatuation towards his younger sister after her death through a picture of multiple girls sharing the same appearance as her on his phone.
Jun's personality during the post-timeskip has taken a turn for the worse. Unlike the past, when he used to be more impulsive, more misguided, and (in Kaname's case), well-intentioned, he is currently cruel, manipulative, incestuous, and hypocritical (proven when he claims to despise the Revolution Club for killing his sister, only to reveal his loyalty to them). Because of his newfound obsession for Kaname, he began targeting girls and performed surgical face-changes on them where they share the same face as his late sister, from older to even younger women, including a child. Due to being gaslighted by Kyou and Momoki Sana, Jun's obsession for his sister borders on complete madness while demonizing Uruma, who he sees as the root cause of Kaname's death and Jun's situation and maniacally desires to have revenge on.
Jun's fall from grace and utter depravity reached its pinnacle when he, in a spiteful attempt to make Uruma feel both his pain and despair, sadistically raped "Azuma Chizuru" in front of the restrained Uruma as well as two police officers. Despite this, it's made clear that while vengeful, he still cared about Azuma as it's revealed the one he raped and killed was a double, meaning he had his chance to do the same thing to the real Azuma but never had the will because a part of him did see her as a friend. Even though his obsession with Kaname turned to lust, he still felt hurt about her passing as his desire to avenge her (albeit twisted) shows that Jun still loves her as his sister.
During Jun's final confrontation with Uruma, he begins to suffer a mental breakdown and recalled his past friendship with Uruma and Azuma just before he could kill the former. It is hinted that he was able to break from Kyou's psychological grip and regained some semblance of his kind self as he envisioned Kaname looking towards him and even called Uruma by his old nickname. Realizing how much of a monster he had become and unable to torment his former friends anymore, he opts to commit suicide via gunshot to the mouth, causing an angry Uruma to beat Jun's corpse up before the rest of the "Kaname" clones commit suicide to join their master in death.
Trivia[]
- Out of all the villains in Juujika no Rokunin, Jun is one of the few villains to be initially tragic before becoming just as insane as the majority of the villains in the manga, given the misunderstanding between him and Uruma regarding the incident between Madoka and Kaname. Following the timeskip, he is no longer a tragic villain as he fully embraces the darkness inside him.
- Had Shun or Kaname told Jun that Madoka was the one who raped the latter, Jun probably wouldn't have become one of the supporting antagonists in the manga to begin with (meaning that Kyou would probably be unable to manipulate him thanks to Jun finding out about the truth).
- It was initially unknown as to what happened to Jun when the police, along with Oota (Anzai Zenichi's assistant), entered the school to arrest Shun Uruma. It is widely speculated that he either ran away from the school by himself or that he was kidnapped by Kyou and his cult, getting killed off in the story (however, given that Kyou and his cult would not like to spare any witnesses to their crimes, the latter one is more likely to be true). Chapter 141 revealed that not only is he still alive since the events of Uruma's confrontation with Kyou, but at the same time, he continues to work for the Revolution Club in spite of what they did to his sister (confirmed when Jun was escorted by Andou and Kyou as the latter smirked at Uruma before escaping from the police).
- Jun is revealed to have an incestous feeling towards his sister as his phone reveals multiple girls with the same face and the same hairstyle as Kaname. In addition, with the reveal that he was the "master" of the Kaname whose surname is Matsushima, it is revealed that he is the abusive boyfriend who "Juujika" are to target.
- Chapter 148 reveals that Jun was the man who shot Uruma during one of Uruma's confrontations with Shigoku after his release from prison.
- Jun Shirakawa could be similar to another villain named Yukishiro Enishi from another manga, Rurouni Kenshin, in some ways:
- Both characters have lost a sibling in the past.
- Both characters have the desire to avenge their murdered siblings.
- Both characters constantly antagonize the main protagonists (Jun to Uruma and Enishi to Kenshin) as a result of the suffering their siblings have went through, even going to extreme lengths to make the protagonists suffer.
- Although both characters could have tortured the lovers of the main protagonists in front of the protagonists themselves, both of them didn't have the heart to do so and instead used a doppelganger to torture in front of the protagonists for the sake of making the protagonists suffer while keeping the real lovers safe from their actions towards the protagonists.
- However, the differences between Jun Shirakawa and Enishi Yukishiro is that:
- While Enishi did have a point when berating Kenshin for having murdered his sister in the past, Jun's accusation towards Uruma of having raped (and murdered) his sister is very irrational as Uruma was ironically the one to have murdered Kaname's actual rapist, Madoka Hiro, while Shigoku Kyou had Momoki Sana mutilate and murder Kaname during the enforced "Rock, Paper, Scissors" match between Uruma and Jun.
- While Enishi found closure and redemption in his life upon learning of his sister's last words in her journal prior to her death, Jun became even worse than he already has been as he performed botch surgery on multiple women sharing the same hiragana characters of his late sister's name.
- Enishi became evil AFTER the death of his sister while Jun became evil PRIOR to the death of his sister.
- While Enishi continued to live as he searches his path to redemption, Jun simply commits suicide after snapping out of his insanity and after seeing an image of his late sister standing next to him.
- Interestingly, Jun has the honor of being the first villain in the Juujika no Rokunin manga series to possess some redeeming characteristics despite Kyou's indoctrination and corruption of his character (such as refusing to have Azuma Chizuru hurt as she is innocent and genuinely loving his sister in spite of his obsession for her), which is a stark contrast to the majority of the Juujika no Rokunin villains who are often irredeemable and selfish as they care for no one but themselves (although this is slightly downplayed with Andou as he does care about his best friend, Kurusu, prior to the latter's death at the hands of Reo Suzuyama). Despite this, possession of such redeeming characteristics makes the crimes that he committed viciously ironic.
- Furthermore, he is the second major villain to evade any form of torture after Kyou (though this may change in Kyou's case later on).
