~ Sugiuchi's last words |
Junji Sugiuchi is a major antagonist from Yakuza 4, being the secondary antagonist of the Tanimura story arc.
He is a gruff veteran detective who works for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, but is secretly a member of the Ueno Seiwa Clan. Forced to do crimes for the Deputy Commissioner Seishiro Munakata, Sugiuchi longs for peace and freedom.
He is voiced by and modeled after Kenichi Endo, who also played Hideaki Goto in The Raid 2 and voiced Groot in the Japanese dub of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Appearance[]
Sugiuchi has a weary appearance, with sunken eyes and a wrinkled forehead. He has pushed back hair and wears a grey suit with a baby blue dress shirt, adorned with a navy tie.
Personality[]
Sugiuchi is a typical gruff officer who can occasionally be harsher than necessary. His harshness can sometimes be taken to an unhealthy extreme, even going as far as hitting perps during interrogations. In truth, Sugiuchi envies Tanimura and feels guilty and confused every time he finished a case. He longed to be a real officer and resents Munakata and Katsuragi for using him like a tool.
Biography[]
Sometime in the 80s, a young Ueno Seiwa Clan member named Junji Sugiuchi would join the Tokyo Metropolitan Police as an infiltrator for his family. While he was busy rising the ranks and becoming a detective, his sworn brother Isao Katsuragi hatched a scheme to help him rise in his family. Katsuragi would leak information about a Ueno Seiwa clan meetup to Hideki Sasai, a Tojo Clan official, and provided him firearms and the means to send two junior Sasai Family officers, Goro Majima and Taiga Saejima, to the shop. Saejima, without Majima, would storm the shop and shoot all 20 officers, including the family patriarch Yoshiharu Ueno and Katsuragi himself. Unbeknownst to the young man, the guns were filled with rubber bullets, and Katsuragi was wearing a bulletproof vest, both of which were provided by Sugiuchi. Once Saejima had been arrested, Katsuragi slaughtered the 18 officers, leaving only Ueno alive to make it look like he saved him. Once he was finished, Sugiuchi shot Katsuragi in the shoulder to make it seem like he took a bullet for his patriarch. After "investigating", he provided a report to the Deputy Commissioner, Seishiro Munakata, who almost instantly sniffs out that the assassination was a ploy by Katsuragi. Instead of arresting Sugiuchi and Katsuragi, he blackmails them into working as his minions to advance his career. Sugiuchi would work as an assassin for Munakata, killing anyone who would dare seek out the corrupt official's truth. One of these men was Taigi Tanimura, whose adopted son would eventually grow into the downfall of Sugiuchi and Munakata: Masayoshi Tanimura.
Sugiuchi's life would continue like this until March of 2010, when he would wrongfully arrest Shun Akiyama for the murder of Masaru Ihara. The following day, Akiyama is released thanks to the testimony of his assistant, the lovely Hana-chan. As Akiyama leaves, Sugiuchi tells him to be thankful that she testified on his behalf, but then tells him to keep his nose out of yakuza affairs and to not give money to people like Kanemura Enterprises, a small yakuza family and subsidiary of the Tojo Clan. Akiyama defends the family, but is informed by Sugiuchi that Hiroshi Kanemura, the family's patriarch, was murdered that morning. Later that day, Sugiuchi encounters Akiyama yet again, alongside the young Kanemura Enterprises member Takeshi Kido. Sugiuchi, now enraged at Akiyama for not listening to him, sends his men to arrest the loan shark. Akiyama flees the scene and lets the situation cool down, and then takes Kido to the police station for questioning. During his interrogation, Sugiuchi tries to get info from Kido about Akiyama's relationship to the real murderer and captain of Kanemura Enterprises, Hiroaki Arai, but is unable to get any information. He even listens to a conversation Akiyama and Kido have in the bathroom, but only hears them insult him.
A couple days later, a new person is being questioned about their involvement: the now-fully grown Masayoshi Tanimura. As he asks the detective questions, he begins to realize that Tanimura isn't listening to him, and instead is listening to horse races on his earpiece. Sugiuchi starts to berate Tanimura for his gambling addiction and terrible attitude, which prompts him to get up and leave, saying he's late for work. Sugiuchi snaps at him, saying that his "work" is just shaking down illicit businesses for hush money. Tanimura just rolls his eyes and leaves, which annoys Sugiuchi. The next day, Katsuragi leads Tanimura into a trap that almost results in his death but is saved by Sugiuchi. After his lucky escape, Tanimura makes his way to the pier, where he interrogates Yutaka Mishima, sworn brother of Ihara. Mishima desperately begs for safety but is shot by Sugiuchi before he can give Tanimura information. Tanimura is unsurprised, as he tells Sugiuchi that he was able to tell he was corrupt because his shoes were too expensive for a cop, and that the only way for him to have been able to save Tanimura earlier was if he was involved in the scheme. Tanimura then reveals that he knew he'd show up to kill Mishima and reveals that several officers were waiting for him. He is ordered to be taken into custody, but he laughs, telling them that the higher ups would protect him, even daring the officers to do something. As expected, nobody moves. Sugiuchi begins to make his way out the door, but is stopped by Tanimura, who tells him he's not scared of Sugiuchi's threats. Sugiuchi makes a break for it, with Tanimura in hot pursuit. Sugiuchi steals a boat, with Tanimura doing the same, and the two have a chase on the darkened sea. They reach a pier and Tanimura grazes Sugiuchi's shoulder with a bullet, causing him to fall over in pain. Tanimura corners him, and Sugiuchi uses this as an opportunity to reveal to Tanimura that he killed his father. Horrified, Tanimura handcuffs him. Sugiuchi insults Tanimura and swings at him, and the two begin to battle on the pier. Tanimura ultimately comes out on top and breaks down in tears, begging Sugiuchi to tell him why he did this.
Realizing this is the end for him, Sugiuchi comes clean. He tells Tanimura everything, from his position in the Ueno Seiwa Clan to Munakata's villainy. He tells him how happy he is that he finally gets to tell the truth and discusses how he's lived the last 20 years of his life in complete fear and waste. He tells him that the only times he's ever felt good in his life was when he solved crimes and helped victims find justice, which made him question why he was doing this in the first place. He smiles and tells Tanimura to arrest him, saying he will tell the authorities everything. Before he can make things right, however, he is shot by an assassin on a boat. Tanimura begins to panic and tells Sugiuchi to hold on, but the senior detective has accepted his fate. He looks at Tanimura and tells him that he's finally found peace, and thanks him for everything. The detective dies, having finally found the freedom he wanted.
