Justin Rutherford is a major antagonist in the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street, first appearing in 21 December 2022 and currently serving as one of the show's main antagonists in 2023.

In his storyline, Justin becomes acquainted with main character Daisy Midgeley when he meets her at the hospital while his mother is dying. He soon falls in love with Daisy, but this soon becomes deconstructed into an obsessive crush to the point where he begins stalking and harassing her on multiple occasions. Justin soon attempts to target Daisy in an acid attack, only to end up victimizing her neighbour Ryan Connor instead. Afterwards, Justin is arrested for his crimes.

He is portrayed by Andrew Still.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Little is known about Justin's early life. What is known is that he was born in Scotland on 10th November 1994 and has two known relatives; his mother and a sister named Karen, who, Justin had a strained relationship with.

During Karen's collage years, Justin developed a romantic interest in the sister of one of Karen's friends and would claim that they were dating. Justin later had a confrontation in a park with the girl and gave her a black eye.

Coronation Street[]

Justin first came to Weatherfield in December 2022. He gets acquainted with local resident Daisy Midgeley when she encounters him at Weatherfield General when going for a mammogram and ultrasound because of a lump in her breast, while his mother was dying from cancer. Daisy tried to make him feel better by comforting him. However, Justin would begin to develop a disturbing infatuation with Daisy sending her flowers under the alias of "Romeo".

Soon enough, Justin begins to stalk Daisy and sends messages to her on social media and more flowers. He also starts working as a delivery driver in order to see Daisy more and repeatedly bombards her with texts, much to her annoyance. Things get worse as her attempts to report him to the police fail as she punches him after thinking he was giving her more flowers, when he was actually on his way to make arrangements for his mother's funeral. Her attempt to have a stalking order against Justin is also hampered after her fiance Daniel Osbourne attacks him after he went into their house through the unlocked back door to harass Daisy.

In March 2023, after failing to get the police involved in stopping him, Daisy lures Justin to Victoria Gardens and berates him for his attitude towards her. Justin lashes out and attacks Daisy, but just then local police officer Craig Tinker witnesses this and rushes to the scene. He apprehends Justin, saving Daisy in the process, and arrests him for assault; Justin is charged for assault but is later released on bail.

On the day of Daisy's wedding, Justin confronts her in The Rovers Return and throws a glass of acid at her to stop her from marrying Daniel - so that Justin can have her for himself. However, to Justin's surprise, Daisy's friend Ryan Connor jumps in between them and is hit in the face and upper body by the acid. Justin flees the pub, knocking over Daisy in the process. Justin is later is seen by Daisy at the car park of Weatherfield General and confronts him for what he did. Justin tries to justify his actions, stating his belief that if Daisy looked different, she would not be wanted by "shallow people", but he would have made her feel beautiful and perfect. Daisy steals Justin's car keys and alerts the police at the hospital, who arrest Justin for GBH and for breaching his bail. Justin calls after Daisy as she goes back into the hospital, but she ignores him.

The following month, Justin went to his plea hearing and was unnerved to see Daniel there instead of Daisy. Afterwards, Justin plead not guilty for what happened to Ryan.

In late May to early June, Justin's trial begins, where he is pleased when Ryan does not appear to give a statement (having got cold feet after discovering that Karen had overheard him and Carla confronting Daisy about her manipulative past, which Karen then passed on to Justin's lawyer, making Ryan believe that the information would cause Justin to walk free). Justin then watches on as Daniel and Daisy give their statements and are cross-examined by Justin's defence barrister. Much to Justin's dismay, Ryan has a change of heart and arrives at the trial to give a statement.

After watching Ryan give his statement and be cross-examined, Justin takes to the stand and claims that he went to The Rovers Return to talk to Daisy (who Justin claims was having second thoughts about her wedding) and did not know that Ryan (who Justin claims was being manipulated by Daisy) was there. Justin also claims that Ryan was the one with glass of acid and had tried to throw it at Justin, only to spill it on himself. Justin also says that the reason he fled the pub was because he was believed that Ryan had more acid. This accusation, causes Ryan to storm out of the courtroom and Daisy to worry that the jury will believe Justin's version of events.

As the defence barrister gave her closing statement to the jury, Justin smiled smugly at Daisy, confident that the jury would find him not guilty, only to be shocked when the jury found him guilty and that he would be sentenced at a later date. As he is led out of the courtroom, Justin shouts to Daisy that he still loves her and that they will be together again. However, Daisy does not respond to these words as she knew that with Justin now imprisoned, her ordel was finally over.

In October, as Ryan and Daisy lecture a group of kids at the Greenford Secure Training Centre, it is revealed that Justin was sentenced to ten years in prison for his actions. Later that day, as Ryan talks with Daisy, his neighbour Max Turner and his friend Gav walks past them. When Gav playfully throws water at Max, it lands on Ryan. Gav apologies to Ryan, only for Ryan to have a hallucination and see Justin in Gav's place. Believing that Justin has returned and thrown acid at him again, an angry Ryan attacks him and pins him to the ground. Ryan is then restrained by Daisy and Max, with Daisy telling Ryan that what Gav did was an accident. Ryan comes to his senses and realises that it was Gav he attacked not Justin. An horrified Ryan apologises to Gav.
