Anatoli Knyazev, better known as KGBeast, is a supporting antagonist in the DC Comics universe and an enemy of Batman.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Anatoli Knyazev AKA the KGBeast, was an extraordinary assassin who was in the employ of the KGB, which is a Soviet Union's secret police and intelligence agency. Knyazev then became a rogue agent. He went on an unauthorized mission to kill ten key people involved with the United States' Strategic Defense Initiative, which was nicknamed the "Star Wars" program. The Soviets decided to warn the American government about Knyazev's plan. Regardless, Knyazev was able to succeed in his mission. He managed this by killing seven of the designated targets. In pursuing his mission, Knyazev came to Gotham City and came into contact with the costumed crime fighter, the Batman.

The New 52[]

In an attempt to destroy Batman's spirit, KGBeast sniped Nightwing in the head, which didn't kill him, but left him badly injured for weeks and amnesiac for months. In revenge, Batman tracked KGBeast to Siberia and after a brutal fight, snapped his neck, leaving him alive but paralysed.

KGBeast Prime Earth 23 — Knyazev as Commander Star

The Russian Government (implied to be a scheme by Vladimir Putin himself) would rehabilitate Anatoli and gave him an American style superhero identity as Commander Star to manipulate the citizenry of Gotham into violent uprising as to begin a process of weakening the USA. Star collaborated with the Riddler, who had his own plan to takeover Wayne Enterprises to prove himself superior to Bruce Wayne/Batman; ultimately, Riddler was unaware of the Russian plot to incite sedition, thus flipped to aid Batman.

After Batman stopped the other Russian agents from returning to Russia with Wayne Enterprises data, and safely crashed their private jet, he engaged in battle against "Star." During the fight, Batman commended Anatoli for such a convincing American accent that he wasn't aware it was him at first, which Star accepted with some humility as he praised his government for healing him and training him to appear like an American hero.

Star extended two blades from his arms, one of which Batman removed and wielded himself; Batman cut off Anatoli's left arm just before the elbow, then began to furiously pummel his face for the past and present transgressions, being especially enraged that Bruce's recent philanthropy had been undermined by his late father's possible adultery and bastard child. Batman almost beat Anatoli to death, but seeing the crowd witnessing his brutality, he withheld from further strikes as to not further ruin the positive image he wants for the Bat.

Commander Star was exposed as KGBeast and arrested.

Cybernetic Enhancement: KGBeast possesses internal cybernetic enhancements that increases his Strength, Agility, Stamina and Durability to metahuman levels
- Enhanced Strength: His cybernetic enhancements gives him the strength of 4 men and the ability to literally tear a man in two with his bare hands.
- Enhanced Speed: Anatoli has cybernetic improvements to grant him the speed of 4 men, being able to reach 112 km /h.
- Superhuman Agility: Knyazev is highly agile despite his size, allowing him to leap across rooftops.
- Pain Resistance: KGBeast has a high resistance to pain allowing him to cut off his arm and escape capture.

Abilities[]

KGB Training: Anatoli was highly trained in extreme methods to be physically as well as mentally trained to deter, capture or kill hostile agents, saboteurs, bandits and other criminal elements. He received training in reconnaissance and sabotage.
Master Combatant: He is a highly formidable hand to hand combatant, proficient in Sambo, Boxing and Systema. He has fought Nightwing, Tim Drake, King Snake, defeated Huntress and an out of practice Bane, and matched Batman in combat on multiple occasions.
- Weapons and Explosives Master: KGBeast is trained in the usage of every weapon imaginable, advanced and archaic. He is also competent in the use of explosives.
  - Master Marksman: KGBeast is extremely skilled with firearms, this includes handguns, sub machine guns, sniper rifles, and rocket launchers.
Espionage Master: He is an experienced espionage operative. He is able to hide his identity under many disguises which is why he was hard to find.
Multi-Lingual: He's able to speak fluent Russian, Spanish, German and English.

Equipment[]

Prosthetic Gun: Having cut off his arm to avoid Batman, the KGBeast has since had it replaced with a prosthetic machine gun arm. It's a military prosthesis consisting of a titanium alloy. It has an automatic firing system with an extended magazine. It also features a retractable bayonet, micro rockets, and a tear gas dispenser.
Cybernetic Eyepiece: To compensate for the eye removed by Batman, he implemented a cybernetic eye, feeding visual information directly to his brain, the eye is waterproof, shockproof and impact resistant. The eye also has Night Vision, Infrared Vision and Tactical Analysis.
Beretta 92: KGBeast carries this handgun in his shoulder holster as his sidearm of choice.
Shurikens: KGBeast carries and uses throwing stars with him, which he used against Batman during an encounter.
Steel Nunchaku: KGBeast carries a pair of steel nunchucks with him on
Sniper Rifle: KGBeast use d a sniper rifle to shoot Nightwing in the head.
Submachine Gun: KGBeast used this submachine gun during an assassination.
Combat knife: KGBeast has used a combat knife on some occasions such s a trench knife or a kukuri style machete.
Throwing knives: KGBeast used throwing knbive stocks slow down Batman during a chase.
Bazooka RPG: KGBeast used this rocket launcher in his assassination of Senator Dayle.
Brass knuckles Spikes: KGBeast sometimes wears spiked knuckle dusters for close quarters combat.

Justice League Unlimited[]

KGBeast DCAU 001 — KGBeast in the *Justice League* series.

He first appears in the episode "Kids Stuff" where he Copperhead, Cheetah, and Blockbuster try to rob a gold vault but they are all stopped by the Justice League. He later makes a few cameos in episodes as part of the Legion of Doom. In the episode "Alive" he sides against Luthor during the mutiny against him. In the end he is killed in the fighting.

Arrowverse[]

Anatoly Knyazev is mentioned as the leader of Soltsevskaya Bratva in the episode "Vertigo". At some point, Oliver Queen saved his life and in return he made Queen a captain in his army. Their first meeting was shown in flashback where they were both shown as prisoners on the ship "The Amazo". He brought Oliver Queen to the Bratva, but tried to prevent him from crossing the line. Both Anatoly and Oliver worked together to overthrow Ishmael Gregor as the Pakhan and stop Konstantin Kovar.

However, being in the Bratva made him lose some of his morals. While still friendly to Oliver in their initial encounters, later on he become more tied to Bratva and willing to make Oliver overlook a drug theft. Due to Anatoly losing his morals, he grew estranged from Oliver and even worked with RIcardo Diaz until he learned he was dishonorable.

They reconciled afterwards when Oliver visited him with his future children.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice[]

KGBeast appears as Anatoli Knhazev as a major antagonist in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Lex Luthor's hired henchman.
