The end justifies the means. What do I care if I rule over the dead rather than over the living? The dead ask fewer questions.
~ Kaervek

Kaervek the Merciless is a black and red aligned human warlord from Magic: the Gathering and the main antagonist from the Mirage Block.

History

Most of Kaervek's youth remains a mystery, but it is known that he comes from the Dominarian region of Urborg. He was very skilled with magic even at a young age and wished to have a kingdom to call his own. He planned on conquering the three islands of the Burning Isles, but knew that many other would be conquerors would stand in his way. During his travels across the Plane, he felt a surge of energy from the Chaza Isles and went there to find out its source and figure out if he is able to use it. Unbeknownst to Kaervek, the surge of energy came from the Planeswalker Teferi after he and the island was on faded out of existed. Once Kaervek arrived, he found nothing except for two beings who also came to investigate the source of the surge. These were Mangara of the White Woods and Jolrael of Mwonvuli. The three traveled to the continent of Jamuraa and settled down and Kaervek and Jolrael became close allies. When the three left Jamuraa and went to Mangara, Kaervek convinced Jolrael that Mangara was very useful in their efforts to rule the land. Jolreal started a war and Kaervek trapped Mangara in an amber prison. With their combined forces they ravaged much of Dominaria. Kaervek's ambitions would be foiled when Rashida Scalebane and Asmira freed Mangara and he defeated Kaervek and imprisoned him inside the amber. It is not known what has happened to Kaervek from this point, but it is believed that after Zhalfir was fazed out, Kaervek was too.
