Don’t. You cannot defeat me with that. Oh, I wasn’t looking down on you. In fact, I’m saying that you have too much strength to kill me.
~ Kagun Kihara

Kagun Kihara, also known as Bersi, is a major antagonist of A Certain Magical Index: New Testament, serving as the secondary antagonist of the Baggage City Arc and a supporting antagonist of the Magic God Othinus Arc.

A former member of the infamous Kihara Family, Kagun is a core member of GREMLIN, being highly knowledgeable in both science and magic and utilizes both simultaneously. He is the archenemy of Byouri Kihara, who he seeks to take revenge on for orchestrating an event that ruined his life.

He was voiced by Yuichi Nakamura.

Appearance[]

Kagun is a tall man with a lean figure who has black eyes and short black hair. He's normally seen wearing a white long coat that reaches his ankles with a belt around his waist, black shoes and gloves, and most notably a white helmet that obscures his identity.

Personality[]

Initially, Kagun wasn't any different from the rest of his relatives, having a callous disposition and a natural aptitude towards science and experimentation. However, after becoming a magician, he has shown to overcome most of these traits, best displayed when he protected several innocent bystanders during the Baggage City invasion. Despite this, he still exhibits some ruthless tendencies, having intentionally manipulated the events surrounding Baggage City in order to exact his revenge on Byouri as well as allowing the events of Radiosonde Castle and the invasion of Hawaii to happen. To that extent, he is still technically considered a Kihara in spite of his good qualities.

While researching near-death experiences, he has performed various experiments related to stopping and restarting the heart. As such, he has killed a great deal of people, though they were revived afterwards. However, he eventually developed a conscience and ended his research after realizing that, since he could freely kill and revive people easily, he was risking human life being judged at a very low baseline. After the incident involving a murderer attacking his students, Kagun becomes extremely vengeful against the person who orchestrated the event, Byouri Kihara, working to bring her down for good.

He is shown to be extremely close to Marian Slingeneyer, his colleague and mentor in magic. It is heavily implied that the two of them are lovers.

After being revived as a Einherjar, Kagun retains his memories but becomes entirely emotionless, only acting on Othinus' commands. He only regains his emotions after being reunited with one of his students, Maria Kumokawa.

Biography[]

Kagun Kihara was a near-death experience researcher who had become very respected amongst the Kihara Family. During his research, he eventually gained the ability to safely stop and restart a person's heart as many times as he wanted. He has killed the most people out of all Kiharas, only stopping his research after feeling remorse about his actions. He then became a famous student keeper, an Academy City position whose main purpose is to prevent students from failing due to skipping classes.

Abilities[]

Whitting: Kagun's main magic which allows him to nullify all fatal attacks he receives and increases the sword's power every time he's attacked. Thus, when facing a fierce attack by the enemy, he can use a spell that has an infinite ceiling. The sword appears as a bluish laser sword several meters long that extends from Kagun's middle and index fingers. When used in battle, the sword scatters when Kagun is at a disadvantage, and amongst its shards, a miracle would occur, a spell that could let Kagun accurately avoid damage and cause the sword to be sharper. When both are assembled, the sword's destructive power will increase exponentially. However, Whitting does not offer protection against anything but fatal attacks, so an opponent that realizes this or has knowledge of the spell can bypass it and take down Kagun by accumulating smaller and non-immediately fatal injuries.

Landmines: Kagun carries a convex shaped charge landmine strapped to his chest under his coat, to be used as a surprise attack when close to an enemy. When detonated, the anti-personnel landmine scatters five hundred metal balls in a fan-shaped blast with a range of 300 meters and an overall width of 200 meters.

Other abilities[]

Genius-Level Intellect: As a Kihara and former researcher, Kagun has extreme scientific knowledge and was a renowned scientist in Academy City, being ranked above Yuiitsu as a Kihara. Due to his former position as a near-death researcher, Kagun's knowledge of human anatomy is supreme, making him capable of easily and safely stop and restart human hearts. Under the tutalage of Marian Slingeneyer, Kagun gained great knowledge of magic as well, allowing him to use both science and magic hand-in-hand. Aside from this, Kagun also displays keen strategic prowess, as he manipulated the events of the Baggage City invasion in order for Byouri to lose all of her safety devices, so that he can fight her on the same level.

Master Combatant: Kagun is a very proficent combatant, mostly utilizing unothodox methods of combat. He is able to apply his knowledge of the human body in combat in two ways, either by applying it offensively to kill enemies or defensively to preserve his life. He also appears to be able to automatically kill others without the use of weapons or supernatural powers simply by forming a handgun gesture with his hand and pressing his index finger against the center of their chest. This action also causes all nearby glass to shatter. The exact mechanics of this ability are unknown, though it's implied to be related to bioelectricity. Kagun can use this skill to safely kill and revive a person.
