It had to be done. He was a good man, but, in truth, he was... soft.
~ Kai to Mike Ehrmantraut about Werner Ziegler's death.

Kai is a minor antagonist in the legal crime drama series Better Call Saul. He is a cocky and belligerent German construction worker and part of Werner Ziegler's team to construct a meth lab for Gus Fring.

He was portrayed by Ben Bela Böhm.

History[]

Kai and the rest of Werner Ziegler's construction team are hired by Mike Ehrmantraut to build Gus' superlab. They arrive in a warehouse, where mobile homes and recreational equipment for them have been set up. Once there, Kai helps himself to a mug of beer and does not obey Mike when he calls for their attention until Werner demands him to. When it is time to ask questions, Kai asks when the women will come, which annoys Werner and Mike. Mike tells his men Nick and Arthur to keep an eye on Kai.

Months later, during one session when fellow employee Casper destroys one of the completed concrete forms by mistake, Kai berates and starts a fight with him which Mike breaks up. In the following rest period, Kai plays pinball and, as he pours himself a glass of beer, insults Mike to his face as well as Werner's German. Mike suggests Werner to send Kai back to Germany, but Werner tells him that despite his rude attitude Kai is needed on the team as he is their best demolition man.

Kai later enjoys a night out at a strip club which Mike arranged for Werner's team, being entertained by the dancers. He gets drunk and kicked out for inappropriately touching a stripper. As Kai argues with the bouncer, Mike stops the latter from calling the police before having Nick send Kai home.

In his next appearance, Kai places explosive charges into the rock obstructing an excavation with Werner. He discovers one of the circuits connecting the charges to the detonator is faulty, but Werner fixes it and Kai blasts the rock out of the way. The team celebrates their success with beer at the warehouse. In a rare moment of displaying a jovial mood, Kai invites Mike to join them in drinking. Later, Nick and Andre monitor the team as they play volleyball; Nick points out that Kai cheats in the game.

Following Werner's death, Kai and the other construction workers are driven to the desert, where they are to be paid in full and leave the country through different vehicles and flights. They are all lied to about Werner being sent home, but know that in reality Mike killed him. After receiving his payment from Mike, Kai tries to console him by telling him Werner was "soft" and his murder "had to be done". This only angers Mike, who in response punches and knocks Kai to the ground before he leaves.
