Villain Overview

Why doesn't anybody... see the big picture?! I'm going to tear down this entire world! Destroy its very foundation! You're all blinded by some outdated sense of what's right! You're just pretending to be heroes! I WON'T LET YOU STAND IN MY WAY!
~ Kai Chisaki to Izuku Midoriya in their battle.
Having a goal without a plan just makes you a daydreamer, and daydreams don't make for a good sales pitch. What happens once you've expanded? How're you gonna use these people? What's your management strategy for this organization? Starting with the Hero Killer, Stain... then the carnal murderer, Muscular... and the death row inmate, Moonfish... all were heavy hitters operating under you, but they got beaten and caught. Almost like you didn't know how to use 'em, right? You can barely handle the ten or so wackos you've got already, and you wanna recruit more? No point in amassing power you can't control. So no... I didn't come here today hoping to work for you. You need a solid plan to make your goals a reality. And I'm the man with the plan.
~ Kai Chisaki criticizing Tomura's lack of planning for the League of Villains.

Kai Chisaki (in Japanese: 治崎 廻 Chisaki Kai), also known by his villain name "Overhaul", is a major antagonist in the anime/manga superhero series, My Hero Academia.

He is the leader of the Shie Hassaikai, a Yakuza organization comprised of villainous Quirk-users. Following the defeat of All For One, Chisaki believes he is destined to become the next ruler of the criminal underworld and plans to destroy the current Quirk society and return the Yakuza to its former glory.

He is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in the Japanese version, who voiced Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh! and Orsted in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. In the English dub, he is voiced by Kellen Goff, who also voiced Funtime/Molten Freddy, Fredbear, Daycare Attendant, Diavolo, Fiddlesticks, the Abyss Heralds and the Techno-Pirate. As a child, he was voiced by Caitlin Glass in the anime series, and Terri Doty as a child in video games.

Appearance[]

Chisaki is a pale, slim 28-year-old man with brown hair and thin eyes with small gold irises. He is usually seen wearing his signature red old-style magenta and gold plague mask to filter bacteria out from the air and wears a dark green bomber jacket with a purple fur-lined hood.

Underneath that he wears a black button-up shirt with matching pants, a light grey tie, a belt and white lace-up shoes. He wears white surgical gloves that help curb the effects of his Quirk, as well as to keep his hands clean. He also has three stud piercings in his left ear. Following his meeting with the League of Villains, he gains a small scar across the left side of his forehead. During his transfer to prison, he lost both his arms to Tomura Shigaraki and Mr. Compress, leaving him unable to use his Quirk.

In the anime, Chisaki's skin breaks out into hives whenever his mysophobia is triggered.

Upon fusing with Shin Nemoto, Chisaki gains two additional arms with black and deformed, spiked claws. His hair and clothes become more ragged, and his mask splits apart, which has seemingly fused onto his face. Shin's mouth forms on his right hand when using the former's Confession Quirk.

Upon fusing with Rikiya Katsukame, Chisaki gains a gigantic monstrous form with multiple claws and appendages, his body still lying active in the mouth of the massive figure. The upper jaw of the figure shows Rikiya's mask.

Personality[]

Chisaki is shown to suffer from mysophobia, as he is under the delusion that everybody around him is sick and hates being touched. This is shown when he kills Magne and severs Mr. Compress' arm simply for trying to touch him and is shown constantly scrubbing his arm, in fear of any contamination caught onto him. Chisaki believes that the current society is rife with sicknesses that inspire heroism and villainy, while also believing that the uprising of Quirks brought this on, due to a theory that Quirks were caused by a virus carried by mice.

He is shown to be cruel and sociopathic. After killing Magne, he was only concerned about getting her blood on him. He uses his Quirk to disassemble and reassemble Eri so that he could make Quirk suppression bullets. He is shown to cruelly gaslight Eri, making her feel at fault for his actions as if she deserves her punishment. He lacks any care for his underlings, using them as human shields against danger, murdering them for minor failures, and even fusing with them against their will for more strength, disgusting even Shigaraki. The only underling he seems to have a genuine friendship with is Chronostasis, his childhood friend.

He will do anything to make things go his way, like showering Eri with gifts so that she'll comply with his orders and exploiting suicidal people to be expendable pawns. Although he can be capable of mercy, such as curing the Reservoir Dogs of their sickness and ailments when he easily could have killed them, since seems to be done due to his mysophobia. He will also punish those around him for not showing the proper respect to him and the Shie Hassaiki.

Ever since All For One's downfall, Chisaki has plans of becoming the next ruler of the underworld, making him an instant rival of Tomura Shigaraki. Despite this, he is willing to negotiate agreements with him, as means for him to accomplish his goals. Chisaki was convinced that getting involved in drug dealings would be his one answer to bringing the Yakuza back to its former glory. It would also lead to his misanthropic persona towards Eri, the former boss' granddaughter, after seeing her rewinding abilities as a tool and an opportunity to mass-produce the Quirk-Destroying bullets, using her blood cells. He believed by doing that, it would give him a chance for the Yakuza to gain total control over the entire black market. Hypocritically though, Chisaki's plan on destroying Quirks also relied heavily on his own power that he named after himself, as well as the reversing factor of Eri's Quirk.

Despite his insanity, he has shown to express some sort of sentiment toward the League of Villains, as he wanted to bring out the full potential of the league by having them serve under his command. He only attacked when the league decided to attack first, and even apologized for destroying Mr. Compress' arm. In the end, however, he was really using the League of Villains as pawns to further his goals and, like his own henchmen, had no care for what happened to them.

The only person Chisaki has shown to truly care for is the former boss of the Shie Hassaikai, who happens to be the grandfather of Eri. This is due to the fact that he took him in when he was a young child and has since raised him. In return, Chisaki sees him as a father figure and has been doing everything he can to repay back the kindness his boss offered him and it is part of the reason why he's desperate on accomplishing his goal.

Despite this, the two would sometimes get in conflict with one another, regarding Chisaki's goal of restoring the Yakuza. Their disagreements got to the point where Chisaki had no choice but to put him in a coma for the time being, intending to bring back his consciousness once he restored the Yakuza and "paid back" his debt. After losing his arms, he screamed in anguish when realizing he had no way of undoing what he did to his boss, and when freed from prison the first thing he did was cry out for his boss, affectionately calling him "father".

In the end, Chisaki was a megalomaniac who could not be pulled away from his twisted ambitions. Despite being a competent and dangerous threat, his disregard for the lives of others would eventually result in his downfall. He failed to see how Tomura truly respected his followers whereas Chisaki never saw them as anything but expendable pawns. Also, despite appearing very calm and collected most of the time, he did express signs of fear and shock when Tomura and Compress severed both of his arms and left him in a quirkless state. In this state, he broke down at being left both powerless and helpless, ironically the very thing he wanted to inflict on others. He let out a large scream of agony at this, knowing that all his power and life's work had been taken from him.

Following the riot and prison break at Tartarus, it is revealed that Chisaki has been reduced to a broken and rattled state of mind. He shows to be both unaware and uncaring of the current events around him, only wishing to reunite with his boss and father figure while continuously muttering “old man” in his desire to see him again. Chisaki’s desperation later reveals him having genuine remorse for putting his boss into a coma, even crying tears of regret, and wanting to apologize to him. While Kai still holds contempt towards Izuku (whom the former insulted despite saving his life earlier), nor feels the same regret towards what he did to Eri, he made a deal with Izuku to make amends with Eri if it means he can go back to his boss.

History[]

Background[]

In the past, Chisaki was a young street child taken in by the Yakuza's boss. Hoping to repay him for his kindness, he has been developing bullets that could erase somebody's Quirk that he could sell on the black market. To achieve it, he used his Quirk, Overhaul, to take apart and reassemble a girl named Eri, who has the power to reverse a person's physical state. However, the Boss found Chisaki's actions unethical and was clearly alarmed by Chisaki's sociopathic mindset, threatening to kick him out of the yakuza. Only wanting to repay his debt to his father figure, he put him in a coma so that he could lead the Yakuza and distribute the Quirk Erasure Bullets, intending to wake him up once he completed his plan and showed him the results were worth it.

Hero License Exam Arc[]

Chisaki is first seen stopping a group of villains called the Reservoir Dogs, disassembling them, and fusing them into parts of the truck. Believing them to be sick and in need of curing, Chisaki then heals and cures them of their "sickness". Chisaki then encounters the villain known as Twice and is taken to meet the League of Villains.

Shie Hassaikai Arc[]

Chisaki later meets Tomura Shigaraki and tells him about how he hopes to rise in the criminal underworld after the power vacuum set by All For One's arrest, much to Shigaraki's annoyance. He offers a merger with the League of Villains, but Magne is against the offer. After Magne tries attacking Chisaki, he blows up her upper body and then severs Mr. Compress' arm after he retaliates. When Shigaraki tries to retaliate to avenge his comrades, Chisaki orders one of his minions to act as a human shield, protecting him. After Chisaki and Shigaraki calm down, Chisaki offers his business card to Shigaraki in case he wants to reconsider an alliance.

Chisaki's Encounter With Mirio and Midoriya

Chisaki's first encounter with Mirio and Izuku.

One day, during Izuku's internship with Mirio, Eri manages to escape Chisaki's clutches. Realizing they were in a situation where they couldn't stop him, Izuku grudgingly lets Chisaki take Eri back. When Chisaki returns to his lair, he kills another one of his lackeys for failing to restrain Eri.

He later has a meeting with Shigaraki, who demands to know what the quirk nullifying bullet is. Shigaraki is enraged and still feels as though they are not even, with Chisaki casually using one of his henchmen as an expendable shield to protect himself while Shigaraki is angry over Magne's death and Compress losing an arm to Chisaki. Shigaraki decides to pragmatically work with Chisaki, offering him Twice and Himiko Toga, secretly trusting them to betray Chisaki.

When the heroes raid the Shie Hassaikai's hideout, he is seen talking to his father figure, apologizing and assuring him that everything will be alright. He encounters Togata Mirio, who manages to put up a decent fight. One of his underlings shot Togata with the Quirk nullifying bullet, but that didn't stop him. When he encounters Izuku, in an act of desperation, he fuses with Shin Nemoto. Chisaki manages to fatally wound Sir. Nighteye but after a brief fight with Izuku, Eri uses her Quirk to defuse them.

Chisaki's humiliating defeat.

Chisaki then fuses with Rikiya Katsukame. After learning what Eri could do, Izuku lets Eri ride his back so that he can use One For All at 100% without hurting himself and manages to completely dominate Chisaki in their battle. With Chisaki defeated and arrested, the police convoy who's taking him to prison is intercepted by the League of Villains.

When Shigaraki has Chisaki cornered, he asks if he's going to kill him, but he has something worse in mind for him. Shigaraki has had a grudge against him for killing Magne and severing Mr. Compress' arm. As payback, he and Compress sever his arms, ensuring that he could never use his Quirk again. The League of Villains then make off with the Quirk Erasure Bullets while Chisaki is left in a helpless state screaming in despair that not only had everything he'd worked towards been stolen from him, but he could no longer bring his boss out of the coma Chisaki put him in. Chisaki later receives medical treatment for his arms and had his Quirk remodeled, but due to his dangerous ideology, he was still imprisoned in Tartarus.

Tartarus Escapees Arc[]

Overhaul is freed

Upon being freed, Kai immediately worries about his boss.

Chisaki remained in Tartarus still until Tomura raided the prison with the Near-High End Nomus. Though many villains escaped, Chisaki was still sealed inside his cell as he could not open the door, due to his missing arms, but he was eventually freed by another villain, allowing him to escape as well, with his goal being to reunite with his boss.

Chisaki met up with his rescuer, Lady Nagant, and told her about Izuku, who ruined his plans and suffered from "Hero Syndrome", making Nagant believe that it was fate. She asked him to identify Izuku, and he agreed on one condition. Nagant said she wouldn't take revenge for him, but Chisaki broke down and told her that he'd lost everything and his boss is the only one he has left, while silently apologizing to him.

Chisaki later accompanied Lady Nagant in which the two came across Izuku Midoriya, having him cornered. As Nagant attempts to capture Midoriya, Chisaki remains off in the corner, rambling about wanting to see his boss. Slightly annoyed with his presence, Nagant assured him that he will see him once she's finished her mission, while at the same time wishing she had left him behind. Eventually, Nagant pointed her gun at Chisaki and threatened to shoot him though Chisaki was indifferent to this, only screaming at her to hurry up and finish so he can go back to his boss. Deku is shocked at the sight of his old enemy.

As she took her shot, Izuku saved Chisaki from the bullet, despite all the things he'd done to him and Eri, with the hero telling him they'll talk later. After breaking Lady Nagant's rifle arm, he told her that her aim was slightly off when threatening to shoot Overhaul, showing that she didn't want to kill him and she still had a conscience inside. Unfortunately, All For One triggered an explosion within her body, seeing her as nothing but his tool. As she regained consciousness and got detained, Kai worried that she wasn't supposed to get caught, as she was his only hope of saying sorry to his boss. When Izuku noticed, Kai insulted him, but after Izuku talked about what he'd done to Eri, he was eager to go back to her but still held no remorse for his treatment of her, only thinking of how to use her to heal the boss. Izuku made a deal with him that if he made amends with Eri, he would assist him to heal his boss in Nagant's place.

Powers and Abilities[]

Rappa Dies

Demonstrating his Quirk on Rappa.

  • Overhaul: Chisaki's Quirk allows him to disassemble and reassemble anyone/anything through physical contact. He is able to kill people instantly with this Quirk as shown when he blew up Magne's and Rappa's upper bodies off completely. Unlike Shigaraki's Quirk, however, Chisaki seems to have control of his to a certain degree, as he was able to only destroy Mr. Compress' arm, while he utterly destroyed Magne. Chisaki is also capable of reviving people from the dead with this Quirk, as he was able to reassemble Rappa's body back together. There also seems to be no limit to this, as he was able to bring back Rappa's body back together five times, after challenging him to a fight. However, there does seem to be a set time frame duing which he's able to revive the dead, as he mentions during the final confrontation that as long as he's able to reassemble Eri in time, he does not care what happens to her. Chisaki is also able to use this Quirk as means of fusing with others, as demonstrated on Shin Nemoto and Rikiya Katsukame. Kai Chisaki has currently lost the ability to activate his Quirk, as both his arms were destroyed by Tomura Shigaraki and Mr. Compress; despite he still has the Quirk.
  • Confession: When fused with Shin Nemoto, Chisaki had access to his Quirk. With it, he can learn a person's true thoughts and feelings by communicating with them. Chisaki specifically used it to exploit and manipulate Eri's feelings as a way to get her back on his side.
  • Vitality Stealing: When fused with Rikiya Katsukame, Chisaki had access to his Quirk. With it, Chisaki can increase his vitality by absorbing others through either physical contact or inhaling. As a result, this increases his stamina, in addition to increasing his size, making him physically stronger than before.

Trivia[]

  • Kai Chisaki shares many similarities with another My Hero Academia villain, Tomura Shigaraki.
    • They are both villains who strive to become the next ruler of the underworld and lead a villainous organization as their support.
      • However, unlike Shigaraki, Chisaki is a mature, experienced adult who's already had his plans ready from the get-go. However, Shigaraki's maturity has slowly shown to evolve after Chisaki's defeat.
    • Their Quirks involve coming in contact with people and killing them by reducing them to bits.
      • Chisaki's Quirk, however, is also able to reassemble others, as well as obliterate them.
    • They both wear normal clothes and unique masks that form some personal connection. Chisaki's mask is a link to his mysophobia, while Shigaraki's mask is connected to his father.
  • Like Stain, Chisaki is essentially one of the few villains that help Shigaraki's character grow. In this case, Shigaraki's experience with Chisaki helps form him into a more charismatic and mature leader.
