Kalibak (DC Animated Universe)

Kalibak is a major antagonist in the DC Animated Universe.

He is one of the New Gods of the planet Apokolips whose ultimate goal is to gain the approval and respect of his father, Darkseid, but fails at every attempt no matter how hard he tries.

He was voice by Michael Dorn.

History[]

Superman: The Animated Series[]

Kalibak first appeared in the episode, "Father's Day". He offered to go to Earth and kill Superman himself, but Darkseid refused. Seeing this as an opportunity, Desaad manipulated Kalibak into going to Earth to kill Superman and "cover [his] failure", claiming if he succeeded, Darkseid would accept Kalibak as his son. Kalibak agreed and went to Earth and fought the Man of Steel causing much damage to Metropolis. They had a long fight, but Superman finally bested Kalibak, and threw him out of the city.

Kalibak landed into the nearby wilderness, where a Boom Tube opened in front of him, and Darkseid stepped out, quite displeased that Kalibak disobeyed him. Superman arrived in time to watch Darkseid send Kalibak back to Apokolips with his Omega-Beams. Superman confronted Darkseid, but Darkseid merely blasted him with his Omega-Beams before leaving.

Kalibak would later appear in "Apokolips Now", as part of Darkseid's invasion force of Earth. He asked his father to give him a second chance to prove himself by killing Superman, but Darkseid coldly denied Kalibak's request and sent Steppenwolf instead. After Superman was captured and freed by Dan Turpin, Kalibak attacks the hero, but is easily defeated. He returns to Apokolips along with the rest of the army, after Orion tells Darkseid that Earth is now under the protection of New Genesis.

He appears again in the series finale "Legacy", where he silently observed the interaction between Darkseid and Superman who had been brainwashed by Granny Goodness to believe that he was Darkseid's son, which made him even more resentful towards the Kryptonian. After Superman invaded Earth and regained his memories, he boom tubed to Apokoplips to settle his score with Darkseid fighting his way through Granny Goodness and the Female Furies before making his way to Darkseid's throne room. Kalibak immediately engaged Superman in battle, only to be taken out by him with Darkseid callously remarking "I can't believe he's blood".

Appearance[]

Kalibak is a hunchbacked guy with an exaggerated top heavy build, a vaguely leonine appearance (cat-like ears, mane of black hair), and his father's exaggerated, heavy features.

Personality[]

Kalibak is extremely loyal to Darkseid and strides to make him proud, which is the only thing he wants as there's no real evidence he enjoys killing and slaughtering for its own sake, it's just that these are the only things his father has any interest in.

Trivia[]

Kalibak acts as a foil to his half-brother, Orion. They're both sons of Darkseid and hotheaded warriors that crave battle, but on opposite sides. Orion is also far more competent when it comes to fighting, whereas Kalibak consistently just charges in like a brute and suffers for it. Kalibak yearns for their father's approval just as much as Orion wants to kill Darkseid. Ultimately, Kalibak represents what Orion would have become had he been raised by Darkseid instead of High Father.
