Stop hand

With this final sacrifice, the prophecy will be impossible to fulfill.
~ Kallamar at the beginning of the game.
We worship you, Kallamar, in the hope that you will find us worthy of good health and long lives.
~ A follower of Kallamar as they prepare to sacrifice someone to him.
Although a reknowned recreant among his peerage, Kallamar was masterful in the repression of his underlings through ague. Freed of plague, the creatures of Anchordeep strike with renewed vigor. Heed caution, as thou travel therewith.
~ Haro to the Lamb if they return to Anchordeep after Kallamar has been killed.
It did not matter to Kallamar that his ears were lost, for he was never inclined to listen. Foolish though he may have seemed, he wielded the power of his Crown without discrimination.
~ The Mystic Seller after the Lamb defeats Kallamar a second time.

Kallamar is one of the main antagonists of the 2022 roguelike action-adventure game Cult of the Lamb. He is a Bishop of the Old Faith, the ruler of Anchordeep and the Deity of Petsilence.

Personality[]

While first acting arrogant, Kallamar is soon revealed to actually be the most cowardly among the Bishops, being the one to fear The One Who Waits the most and begging the Lamb to spare his life, going as far as putting all the blame on the other Bishops and begging the Lamb to kill Shamura instead of him.

Much like the other Bishops, he doesn't seem to care too much about his followers, being ready to have them sacrifice themselves for him and accidentally killing many others during his transformation.

As a follower, he is arguably the most amicable Bishop since, unlike Leshy and Heket (and, to some extent, The One Who Waits), he doesn't complain at all nor shows any hostility towards the Lamb (which is likely due to him being a coward and thus preferring to join the Lamb rather than going against them). That being said, he does show some slight arrogance, acting as if he still is an important person and considering his temple to be the most good-looking one.

Biography[]

Sometime in he past, Kallamar bargained with the Mystic Seller and became a god.

Alongside his siblings, Kallamar ruled over the Lands of the Old Faith as one of the last remaining gods. When his brother Narinder grew ambitious and power-hungry, he and the other Bishops sealed him away, which resulted in Kallamar's ears to be wounded.

When Narinder (now known as The One Who Waits) started sending vessels against them, Leshy and the others killed them one by one (except for Ratau, who was unsuccessful in his task) and killed all the lambs in the Lands to prevent a prophecy foretelling The One Who Waits' return. However, killing the last lamb has them end up directly to The One Who Waits, who revives them and grants them incredible powers.

When the Lamb enters Darkwood, Kallamar and Heket are eventually warned of this by Leshy. Heket decides to not bother Shamura about this and orders Leshy to deal with the Lamb. However, Leshy ends up being killed, much to Heket's anger, who casts famine upon the Lamb's followers before she and Kallamar ask for advice from Shamura, who isn't of much help due to their damaged brain.

After Heket is killed as well, Kallamar casts pestilence upon the Lamb's followers twice in an attempt to stop them, but eventually ends up begging for his life, putting all the blame for the Lamb's kind's genocide on the other Bishops and begging the Lamb to kill Shamura instead of him. Eventually, Kallamar is forced to fight the Lamb directly, succumbing like Leshy and Heket.

As revealed by the Mystic Seller, however, Kallamar and the other Bishops got stuck in a state where they have to relive their last moments of agony. As the Lamb ventures to allow all of them to pass on, Kallamar speaks to the Lamb through a statue of himself before sending minions against them and then attempts once more to kill them himself.

Defeated, Kallamar turns into a mortal and is converted to the Lamb's cult. At some point he will ask the Lamb to look for one of his ears in Anchordeep, which will allow the player to use said ear as a relic for the rest of the game.

Quotes[]

Heket: So it is true. The Red Crown sits upon the brow of another.
Kallamar: But how? We did everything we could to—
Heket: It matters not. We need not bother
Shamura with this. Deal with it, brother.
Leshy: As you command, my sister.
~ Kallamar after Valefar has been defeated.
Shamura: Five points to a pentagram, five portents of doom, five siblings stood abreast, five gods and one tomb...
Heket:
Shamura! We did not wish to bother you, but-
Kallamar:
Shamura, the Red Crown grows stronger by the day. Already it has succeeded where he has failed before. Leshy has been slain!
Shamura: Five becomes four becomes three becomes two becomes one becomes nothing.
Heket: ...
Shamura, rest. We will deal with this. Won't we, Kallamar?
Kallamar: Yes, sister! Of course, sister!
Heket: You there, vessel of the
Red Crown! Bow to me, or you will regret it!
~ Kallamar during Heket's second encounter with the Lamb.
He has sent many vessels like you. One after the other, they all fall. You have gotten further than most, granted. I shall enjoy watching your Cult rot from the inside! A disease upon them!
~ Kallamar's first encounter with the Lamb.
Your friend Ratau was the last vessel sent against us, the snivelling coward. And there were countless before him, all equally pathetic and unworthy. Nothing humbles quite like disease. I cast a plague upon your Cult!
~ Kallamar's second encounter with the Lamb.
It seems you cannot be stopped by disease or hunger. And he sends you back from death stronger each time. Please know, it was not my idea to cast out the Red Crown! The other Bishops, my siblings, the blame lies with them. Please, I beg you, spare me. Kill Shamura, but do not send me to my death. Do not send me to him! You will not find my temple. I will be safe there. Yes, I will be safe!
~ Kallamar's third encounter with the Lamb.
Begone, beast! Find satisfaction elsewhere. You will not cross the threshold of my temple!
~ Kallamar once the zone of his temple is reached.
Insignificant critter! You will learn your place! You do not understand, Lamb. Heed my warning and stay away!
~ Kallamar just before his boss battle.
Free me! Let me out!
~ Kallamar speaking through one of his statues in the post-gane.
Stay back! Stay away! Mercy Red Crown, mercy...
~ Kallamar just before his boss battle in the post-game.
What is this? Shamura, Heket? Leshy? I feel... bleugh.
~ Kallamar as he's recruited as a follower.
Lamb! I recalled, as I sat here, a place in the unknowable fathoms of Anchordeep. I sunk it there, my handsome ear, unfairly taken by Narinder. Fetch it, won't you?
~ Kallamar's relic quest.
Ah! A good-looking ear, is it not? You must agree!
~ Kallamar once his quest is completed.
Ah! An offering to me? You have sense, Lamb. Yes, mine was the most beautiful temple. Shamura's had a certain eeriness, and Leshy too, but Heket... eugh. Yes, I will keep this.
~ Kallamar if he's given a crystal.

Trivia[]

  • Kallamar's severed ears reference the phrase "Hear No Evil".
  • Kallamar represents the Horseman of Pestilence.
  • Kallamar's name is likely a play on the word calamari, a dish made from squid. In addition, it also corresponds to how other languages refer to a squid, most accurately "kallamar" in Albanian; other than that, "calamar" in French, Spanish and Catalan and "calamaro" in Italian, to name a few.
  • Kallamar is the second oldest Bishop.[1]
