~ Kam Shan-chu claiming that he'll pay for breaking Ip Man's stuff after incidentally doing so during a hand-to-hand combat between them.

Kam Shan-chu (in Chinese: 金山找, Jīn Shānzhǎo) is a major antagonist in the 2008 film Ip Man and a supporting character in its 2010 sequel Ip Man 2.

He started out as an aggressive northern martial artist who comes to Foshan to challenge other masters, ultimately facing off against Ip Man and losing in the end. In the sequel, he is reformed and has allied himself with Ip Man.

He was portrayed by Fan Siu-wong.

Biography[]

Jin is an aggressive, rude, highly skilled Northern Chinese martial arts master who in beginning of the movie when to Foshan in order to challenge the other martial artists. He was able to defeat a lot of them and planned to open a martial arts club in Foshan after defeating all the martial artists but after hearing about the best martial artist Ip Man, he set off to fight him to be the best martial artist.

During the Japanese invasion in 1937, Jin led a gang of bandits in an attempt to extort money from a cotton mill. He harassed the workers and ordered them the next time he came they better have money. Ip Man later visits his friend, Chow Ching-Chuen, who owns and runs a cotton mill in Foshan. Chow's son tells Ip that a bandit gang led by Jin is harassing the workers and trying to extort money from them. Ip finally consents to teach others and trains the workers in Wing Chun for self-defense.

When Jin and the bandits return to the cotton mill, the workers fight back using the techniques that Ip taught them. Ip himself arrives midway through the battle. He defeats many of the robbers and personally beats Jin, embarrassing him yet again. Ip warns him not to harass the workers again. After this incident, Jin and his men inform the Japanese soldiers of Ip's connection to the cotton mill. Shan-chu get arrested by the Japenese and personally executed by General Miura.

Trivia[]

  • In the original version, Kam spoke with a northern accent. However, the accent was later changed to Mandarin because the director did not want the northerners to be prejudiced.
  • A truncated scene shows Kam telling General Miura that Ip Man was at the cotton factory (while he still has a northern accent) after he being defeated by IP, however, Li Zhao deliberately didn't understand and was chased away by Colonel Sato in order to give Ip a warning. After learning the location by writing, Miura dismissed Kam's request and let Sato shoot Kam as he left. Interestingly, this clip was deleted leading to Kam's appearance as a supporting character in Ip Man 2.
