~ Kamek informing Bowser about Mario |
Kamek is the secondary antagonist of Illumination's 13th full-length feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an adaptation of Nintendo's Mario franchise. He is a Koopa sorcerer and the loyal assistant of Bowser, who assists him in conquering the world and winning the hand of Princess Peach.
He is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who also voiced Jay G in The Simpsons, Captain Gantu in Lilo and Stitch, Skulker in Danny Phantom, Boogie Man in The Powerpuff Girls, Yowie Yahoo In Scooby-Doo! Legends of the Vampire, Temutai in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012, Mammoth, See-More, and Trigon in Teen Titans, Kangor and Onini in Static Shock, Joker in The Batman, Carlton Duquesne in Batman: Mystery of the Batwomen, Kibosh in Casper’s Scare School and the Mauler Twins in Invincible.
Personality[]
Kamek is a very loyal koopa who acts as Bowser's advisor. He demonstrates some level of sadism, as seen by his facial expression when Bowser destroys the Penguin Kingdom, as well as when he is torturing Toad. He is also much more friendly with Bowser and is the main one Bowser opens up to compared to the other Koopas, making him the closest thing Bowser has to a friend/father figure.
Biography[]
Kamek first appears in the beginning when Bowser invades the Penguin Kingdom. He announces Bowser’s approach, and used his magic wand to fling the Penguin King and his soldiers out of the way. He then uses magic to levitate some pieces of ice as stairs for Bowser to use. He is later seen at Bowser’s victory party right by his side as Bowser tells his army his plan of marrying Princess Peach.
While Bowser is singing "Peaches", Kamek interrupts him to inform him about a "mustachioed human" who had appeared in their world, and how Princess Peach was training him. Bowser then slams the piano's fallboard onto Kamek's hands and forces him to stay still, stating “pain is the best teacher”. Eventually, Luigi is taken to Bowser by two shy guys and a snifit, where Kamek uses his magic to levitate Luigi and hold him hostage in front of Bowser. Once the giant turtle gets the information he needs from Luigi, he slams him onto the ground and orders the shy guys and snifit to imprison him in the dungeon, while Kamek softly chuckles at Luigi's misfortunes. Later, as Bowser was rehearsing his proposal to Princess Peach, Kamek takes on the role of said princess until the Koopa General bursts in to warn both of them that they have intel on what Mario, Princess Peach, Toad, and the Kong Army are up to, resulting in Bowser getting the idea to ambush the Kongs.
Bowser and Kamek are then shown overseeing the Koopa General leading his troops against the Kong Army, and then turning into the blue shell, resulting in Mario and Donkey Kong falling, Princess Peach and Toad retreating and the rest of the Kong Army (including Cranky Kong) getting captured. When Princess Peach and Toad arrive back at the Mushroom Kingdom, with the former rejecting Bowser's proposal after his inevitable arrival, Bowser orders Kamek to use his magic to crush Toad. Unable to free Toad, Princess Peach unwillingly agrees to marry Bowser and the latter makes and hand signal to stop Kamek from using his magic, much to his dissatisfaction, but does so anyways; they then retreat back into the floating castle with the rest of the Koopas, Princess Peach, and Toad.
In the dungeon, Kamek tells the inmates of Bowser's lava prison that they will be sacrificed at the wedding, now that the king's plan is coming to fruition. It shows once again how much joy he takes in doing evil things. At the wedding, he serves as the vicar marrying Bowser and Princess Peach. But before he can finish the first sentence, he is punched in the face by Princess Peach, knocking him out.
He was last seen in Brooklyn during the final fight alongside Bowser while levitating the Super Star with his magic. It is unknown what happened to Kamek afterwards, but it is likely he was presumably defeated by Mario and Luigi when they grabbed the Super Star and became invincible against Bowser and his Koopa army. Another possibility is that he is being put in jail
Powers and Abilities[]
- Magic: Kamek possesses vast knowledge regarding magic and is very skilled at wielding it, being able to perform a wide variety of magical spells and abilities with the use of his magic wand that include but are not limited to:
- Levitation/Flight: Kamek can levitate and fly around with the use of his magical broom.
- Teleportation: Kamek can use magic to teleport to any location he desires, appearing and disappearing in purple smoke every time he uses this ability.
- Mystic Telekinesis: Kamek can move and manipulate objects and people using magic, causing them to be surrounded in a purple aura. He can perform a variety of actions using this ability, such as flinging groups of people out of the way and lifting and levitating people and objects.
- Crushing Spell: Kamek can cast a spell that crushes the intended target, generating an aura around it that harms anyone that attempts to physically disrupt the spell, as shown when he used this spell on Toad as Bowser commanded him to hurt Toad in order to force Peach into agreeing to marry him.
Trivia[]
- While his name was shown in the credits, it was never addressed in the film.
- Him impersonating Peach for Bowser while he rehearses for his wedding references games such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, where he dresses up as her to trick the Mario Bros. into thinking that they've won.
- This could also be a homage to the first draft of the critically panned and box office bomb Mario Bros. Movie from 1993, where an early version of his character creates an illusory castle where he impersonated Daisy to capture Mario.
- It's never stated if he is Bowser's parental guardian like in the games, though this could change in the sequel.
- Kamek is seen on his signature broom in only one scene of the film.
- He speaks with a type of German accent.
