Kanade Uryu is a major antagonist of the Platinum End manga and anime Series which was aired in 2021 and originally created by Tsugimi Obha and Takeshi Obata. He is introduced as a Hero stopping crime; however, it is later revealed that he is murdering other God candidates. In Japanese he is voiced by Kaito Ishikawa. And in English he is voiced by Griffin Burns.

Personality[]

Kanade is an immensely callous and cold-hearted person who is willing to kill anyone who gets in the way of his goals, even children. He is also defined by his all-consuming strange obsession with beauty. He believes rich people produce only beautiful people and things while the poor can only produce ugly people as an extension of his extreme classism. His beliefs are extremely classist to the extent he believes in mass eugenics. He particularly held a fixation with his sister who he was intent on keeping beautiful and pure forever. When she died, he was happy she would now never age though he did genuinely love her at heart and was upset she had to die to the extent he tried to kill himself (though this was partially motivated by a desire to remain young and pure like her).

Biography[]

Kanade Uryu was the son of a wealthy family. He had a sister, Rea, who he cared for. Kanade believed people with wealth to be superior to those without. He particularly deplored ugly things, believing the poor were ugly naturally. He treasured Rea, however, and wanted to keep her pure and beautiful. When he learned she was interested in a boy, he was enraged and fought with her though accidentally ended up killing her. Kanade was pleased that Rea would stay young and pure forever but distraught she had died. He was so distraught he tried to take his own life only to be stopped by an angel who gave him his wings and arrows and the chance to become God. Kanade took the chance and took on the guise of the superhero Metropoliman. Metropoliman makes his debut by stopping a group of bank robbers and announcing his supposedly good intent to the world. He later invites other God candidates to the Jinbo Stadium.

Two God candidates indeed end up arriving to the stadium to challenge Metropoliman. A fake Metropoliman appears to interact with them and ends up defeating them. A young girl tries to help the two but Kanade captures her and threatens to kill her if no God candidates show themselves. When none do, Kanade shoots her with a white arrow. The next day, Kanade is attending school with his friend Mizukiyo. Kanade asks him what he would wish for and Mizukiyo says he would like all ugly girls to disappear. Kanade decides to use his powers to grant that wish. He visits his sisters body afterwards.

Kanade shoots a red arrow at a juvenile delinquent and serial killer Mimimi Yamada so she escapes prison as part of an effort to lure out God candidates. Yamada manages to lure Nanato to the Grand Tower which Metropoliman blows up. Mirai confronts Metropoliman for the first time who bluffs about having planted a bomb elsewhere though gets called on this. Metropoliman attacks Mirai and Nanato though fails to eliminate them though Mirai gets a glimpse of his face while they fight causing Metropoliman to flee.

At school one day, Kanade gets a note from someone who wants to meet him in the dance studio. He goes there and gets to speak with Hajime Sokotani, a God candidate who admires him and wishes to be his servant. Due to Hajime's ugliness and poor background, Kanade despises him though decides to use him. Hajime takes Nanato's family hostage to lure him to a house of mirrors where Metropoliman intends to trap them. Mirai and Nanato remain inside the house for days with Metropoliman leaving Hajime to staff. Hajime ends up being brought under Saki's control via red arrow and allows Mirai and Nanato to escape. Metropoliman arrives at the scene with a group of underlings. He brings a deranged pharmaceutical researcher who possesses a virus that will kill people by melting them and threatens to release it unless Mirai agrees to be its first test subject. Mirai approaches her on a ferris wheel. She releases the virus though Mirai hits it with his white arrow. Metropoliman tries to shoot Mirai with a red and white arrow though Saki deflects it back at him. Hajime kills her though ends up getting hit with the melting virus himself.

One of his underlings backs out of the fight after seeing everything and broadcasts the events of the battle to the world. Metropoliman mocks Hajime posthumously upon seeing Mirai and Saki mourning him, comparing him to a cockroach. Mirai is furious and calls Metropoliman less than a cockroach. Mirai decides to shoot Metropoliman with a red arrow and the two agree to mutual combat. After being probed by Saki and Mirai, Metropoliman explains his motives and his desire to cleanse society of the poor and ugly who supposedly rely totally on their wealthier counterparts for assistance too much, something he states is unfair to them. Mirai asks Metropoliman if he's the real one so Metropoliman, thinking Mirai is buying time, shows him his face again. Metropoliman attacks Mirai though his suit turns out to be impenetrable. Saki then grabs Metropoliman's left hand which allows her and Mirai to bind him. Nanato then approaches him with a gun, intending to kill him. Metropoliman desperately pleads for his life, even bringing up his sister though Nanato doesn't listen to him and fires, slicing Metropoliman to bits.
