~ Kannin |
Kannin is the overarching protagonist of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
She is one of the few surviving children of Azra, the mythical city where Dark Ones ruled. When the Black Lotus destroyed the city, she helped her brother Sanzō and friend Taurin escape, but in the process was captured by Magnus, the leader of the Black Lotus, and brainwashed into becoming a mindless killer who hunted down and slaughtered other Dark Ones.
She was portrayed by Eugenia Yuan. As a child, she was portrayed by Ella Bleu Kiely.
Personality[]
As a child, Kannin was very kind and introspective in her interactions with Sunny and Pilgrim. However, after being captured and tortured by Magnus for years she became a cold and ruthless killer for the Black Lotus. Even upon seeing her brother for the first time in years, she was still fiercely loyal to him and wished to turn Sunny into one of them as well. While Sunny was able to eventually break her out of Magnus' brainwashing, she still couldn't initially bring herself to kill him, and instead wished to run away from the Badlands with her brother. Once she was on her own, Kannin was completely lost as she had followed others for her entire life. After the final battle against Magnus, she finally managed to fully overcome his control over her and kill him, although she broke down in tears after having done so. She then began to lead the Black Lotus in a better direction, no longer killing innocent people and instead working to help protect the world from danger. In general, Kannin is a very stoic person, as even after the death of Sunny, she remained reserved and gave him a proper funeral with the help of Bajie.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Kannin was born in Azra, a secret city ruled by Dark Ones, people who possessed the supernatural ability known as the Gift. Kannin was the daughter of Dante, the city's leader, and the sister of Sanzō. Dante trained Sanzō and a friend of his named Taurin as the future heirs to the great kingdom, with Sanzō having the most powerful Gift in the world, and Taurin having the ability to turn the Gift off in others. However, Dante and the other elders of the city planned to use Sanzō and Taurin's great power to invade the outside world, killing anyone who did not have the Gift so that Dark Ones may rule. Kannin was the only child in Azra who could see what the leaders were planning, and did not wish to go along with it out of fear for the safety of her brother. One day, a man named Magnus, a member of the Black Lotus, snuck into the city with two fellow members. The Black Lotus is a cult dedicated to killing Dark Ones, and sent Magnus and the other members to find Azra's location. Dante executed the two unnamed members but left Magnus alive, and told Sanzō that he would have to be the one who killed him, as he wished for Sanzō to become a killer. Sanzō was unable to do it and ended up freeing Magnus, allowing him to escape and report back to the Black Lotus the location of Azra, leading to a complete invasion of the city. The only people to escape were Kannin, Sanzō, and Taurin, who managed to get onto a cargo ship that was holding one of the River King's shipments. The Black Lotus found the ship and begin slaughtering everyone on board, prompting Kannin to lock Sanzō's Gift inside of him so that the Black Lotus could not track it. Kannin then fought the Black Lotus off long enough to allow Sanzō and Taurin to get away, but she herself was captured in the process. Magnus then built a rig for her that she could not escape from even with her Gift, and kept her in it for months on end, slowly driving her insane. She eventually became subservient to Magnus and even began sleeping with him, using her Gift as a weapon to kill other Dark Ones.
Reuniting with Sunny[]
Years later, Sanzō has taken the new name of Sunny and Taurin has renamed himself to Pilgrim. Due to Sanzō's Gift being locked inside him and Pilgrim not having one, the Black Lotus are not able to track the two of them like they can with traditional Dark Ones. Sunny has become the most powerful and feared Clipper in all of the Badlands and lost his memories of his childhood in Azra, while Pilgrim has amassed an army of followers with the goal to bring back Azra. Magnus eventually manages to capture Sunny, with Kannin promising to help turn him into a weapon like Magnus did to her in order to deal with the threat of Pilgrim, as he has found the origin of the Gift and is now creating an army of Dark Ones. Sunny is extremely hostile towards Magnus, knowing that he is a child of Azra but still not able to access his memories, and is aware that Magnus and the Black Lotus destroyed his home. Kannin then reveals herself to Sunny, who thought that she was dead, shocking him greatly. She explains that instead of killing her, the Black Lotus "saved" her, and showed her how dangerous Dark Ones truly are. She then presses a pressure point on Sunny's head, beginning to restore his memories of their time in Azra. She later speaks with Magnus and is adamant that she can unlock his Gift and make him useful to the Black Lotus just like she is. Magnus tells her that he will indulge her, but that she is still a filthy Dark One is his eyes, and proceeds to take out an hourglass and tell her that she has until the sand falls to unlock Sunny's Gift, or he will be executed. Kannin speaks with Sunny again, telling him that they must move slowly in unlocking his memories and Gift, as if they do it all at once the shock will kill him. She then unlocks the memory of Dante asking Sunny to kill Magnus and him being unable to do it. It is around this time that Sunny's friend Bajie breaks into the Black Lotus' hideout to save Sunny, capturing Magnus and holding him hostage so that he and Sunny can escape. He runs into Sunny in the hallway and tells him they can escape, but Sunny says they need to get his sister. Kannin then appears and holds Bajie at sword point, and even threatens to kill herself is he kills Magnus, prompting Sunny to ask Bajie to let Magnus go, which he reluctantly does.
Sunny is then put in the same rig that Kannin was when she was a child, with the plan to turn him into a mindless servant like Kannin after she unlocks his Gift. Magnus goes as far as to taunt Sunny over the fact that he forced Kannin to sleep with him, seemingly shaking Kannin's loyalty. She steps forward with the plan to unlock Sunny's Gift, but Sunny tells her not to forget how this felt, to be enslaved and forced to sleep with Magnus against her will. This finally breaks Magnus' control over her and she activates her Gift, destroying the rig and attacking Magnus. The two fight while Sunny faces the other Black Lotus guards, but Kannin cannot bring herself to kill Magnus due to having followed him for so many years, and instead knocks him out. She then frees Bajie and the two of them help Sunny overpower the remaining Black Lotus members before the three flee from the hideout. Due to the rising threat of Pilgrim's Dark One army, Sunny asks Kannin for help in defeating him, which she agrees to. She then starts leading him and Bajie to a place where she claims they can find help, but Bajie doesn't trust her as he stole a map from the Black Lotus hideout and when examining it sees that Kannin is leading them to a gorge and not anywhere that there is civilization. She ends up leading them to a Black Lotus boat, and reveals that she wants her and Sunny to run away from the Badlands so they can live in peace, but Sunny refuses as he has a young son named Henry that he must get back to, and proceeds to abandon her. Kannin then travels to find Pilgrim, who has taken up refuge in the ruins of the first temple of Azra. He is overjoyed to see her, but this happiness quickly fades due to her telling him that his quest to bring back Azra must end. He himself has obtained the Gift using the Meridian Chamber, the device that serves as the origin of the Gift. Kannin tells him that he was never meant to have it, and therefore it is corrupting his mind. They enter the Meridian Chamber where Kannin tells him that she could see what their elders were doing, and that she must not let Pilgrim finish what their elders started. The two fight, but Pilgrim's Gift is far stronger than hers, and he overpowers her, using the Meridian Chamber to remove her Gift.
War for the Badlands[]
Pilgrim sends Kannin to find Sunny and tell him what he has seen there, which she does, wandering around the Badlands until she finds a refugee camp. She calls out for Sunny until she runs into the Widow, who asks her why she is looking for Sunny. Kannin explains that she is his sister and needs to speak with him. The Widow reveals that Sunny has gone with Bajie and another ally named Gaius Chau in order to recruit Magnus and the Black Lotus to work with them in fighting Pilgrim, as he has grown so powerful that they must work together if they are going to stop him. Kannin travels the meeting spot where she finds the Magnus has refused to work with Sunny and has instead attacked him and his allies, with Kannin joining the battle to help Sunny face Magnus. She manages to overpower him and tearfully snaps his neck, breaking down over having killed the man she followed for so many years. She then reveals to the rest of the Black Lotus members that their commander is dead, and that she has lost her Gift. She says they must work together to face the oncoming threat of Pilgrim or they will all die. The Black Lotus agree to this, and join the warriors of the Badlands in the war against Pilgrim. During the final battle against him, Kannin joins Sunny and Bajie in facing Pilgrim himself in the main hall of the temple. Pilgrim mocks them, saying his Gift is far stronger than any of them ever could be, and that this will only end with him looking down at Sunny's corpse. They engage in a brutal duel, with Pilgrim eventually stabbing Sunny in the stomach with his own sword. Kannin then grabs two hooked chains hanging from the temple's ceiling and stabs them in Pilgrim's back, temporarily turning off his Gift. He then throws her into a wall, knocking her out. Bajie grabs the chains and pulls Pilgrim into the air, giving Sunny an opportunity to pull the sword out of himself and fly forward, stabbing and killing Pilgrim at last, before falling to ground and dying from his wounds. Kannin is last seen with Bajie giving Sunny a funeral, speaking a few last words to him in Azran, telling him she hopes his soul finds peace in his next life, as Bajie promises to take care of his son.
Powers & Abilities[]
- The Gift: Kannin is shown to have one of the most powerful Gift's in all of the Badlands, to the point that the Black Lotus transformed her into a weapon where she could easily overpower other Dark Ones. While using her Gift, the Black Lotus' traditional methods for killing Dark Ones were not effective on her due to the raw power she possessed, and she was even capable of holding her own against Pilgrim, the most powerful known user of the Gift.
- Gift Deactivation: Kannin was capable of deactivating the Gift in others by pressing certain pressure points on their body, an ability she retained even after losing her Gift.
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Kannin is an extremely skilled warrior, having been trained by the Black Lotus in order to take down other Dark Ones using poison and spiked weaponry. Even after losing her Gift, Kannin was still incredibly powerful, able to overpower and kill Magnus, the leader of the Black Lotus, and defeat several members of Pilgrim's Dark One army.
- Leadership: After the loss of her Gift and the death of Magnus, Kannin becomes the new leader of the Black Lotus, and successfully leads them alongside the other warriors of the Badlands against Pilgrim's army of Dark Ones.
