History[]
Backstory[]
Kano is the ruthless, but cowardly leader of the Black Dragon Clan. According to Sonya sometime in the past, he pretended to be only a member of the Black Dragon who was acting as an informant for the Special Forces. It turned out Kano was their leader and lured the Special Forces into a deadly trap getting many of them killed in the process. Though this was not a total victory for Kano as he lost his right eye, though he would mend his injuries and was equipped with a new bionic eye. At some point, he would also kill Sonya's partner.
Continuing his vendetta against Sonya and Jax, Kano became involved with the Mortal Kombat Tournament on Shang Tsung's Island. Kano was thrown into a very different world, but would align himself with Outworld's empire, becoming a general in Shao Kahn's army, and betraying his own Realm. Left in the position for several years, he would join the Deadly Alliance, but would be betrayed to his rival clan, the Red Dragon.
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe[]
In the crossover, Kano makes his first appearance during The Flash's chapter. Where he attempted to steal a jewel already stolen by Catwoman, though she manages to retrieve it and escape through a nearby portal. He eventually fights The Flash but is unable to do much to him due to his quick speed. Kano is also nearly killed by the infected with the Kombat Rage Flash but is saved by Batman. Kano and Sonya end up teaming up to investigate the worlds merging and the two get in a fight with The Joker and Deathstroke at the Graveyard, only to be teleported to Oa. Kano while there gets into a fight with Deathstroke and ends up being easily defeated by him.
The two return to Raiden's temple to inform him of their findings and Kano ends up being infected himself with the Kombat Rage when Shang Tsung mocks him. Kano fights Shang Tsung, but ends up defeated and nearly killed by him, but is saved with Sonya interferes. Kano also participates in the final battle against the DC Universe heroes and villains and ends up killed, but is revived later, after Dark Kahn's destruction.
This version of Kano betrayed Earthrealm to the forces of Outworld, hoping the Black Dragon would profit from the conflict. Kano would remain as the leader of the Black Dragon, plaguing the Special Forces for many years, which also included Sonya and Jax's respective daughters. He also played both sides of the Outworld civil war between Mileena and Kotal Kahn. Kano would eventually align with the forces of Kronika, forming a harmonious alliance with his younger self.
Mortal Kombat: Onslaught[]
to be added
New Era[]
While Kano has not appeared in person in Mortal Kombat 1, he is available as a Kameo fighter in the gameplay outside the story mode.
Kano (voiced by Brian Kesinger) appears in the 52nd Disney film, Wreck-It Ralph, as a member of the "BAD ANON" support group along with the other video game villains. In this version, he performs a version of his trademark heart rip fatality on Cyril. He also berates for considering abandoning Fix-It Felix, Jr.
Kano is one of the main villains of the Mortal Kombat Legends animated film series. Snowblind heavily implies this version of Kano is the same one who gained Kronika's Hourglass in his Mortal Kombat 11 ending.
Kano appears in two episodes of the animated cartoon Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm. He is the main antagonist in Episode 6 (Familiar Red) and also reappears in Episode 11 (Amends). The cartoon explains Kano's past rivalry with Sonya, showing him in a flashback scene, having killed Sonya's partner in a carefully rigged bomb (which almost killed Sonya as well). In Amends, they also touched Kano's relationship with Kabal, showing their past history as clan members in the Black Dragon clan.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy[]
Personality[]
Kano is a mercenary and leader of the Black Dragon, one of the most dangerous, feared and respected Crime Cartels located in Earthrealm. At first, Kano appeared to be loyal to the Special Forces. However, he was revealed to be a mole for the Black Dragon all along feeding false information to the Special Forces. Many Soldiers were killed in an operation gone wrong, including Sonya's partner. Since then, Sonya has harbored a great hatred for Kano. Kano has amassed a fortune selling his arms to other realms. Kano has become one of his own realm’s biggest threats, willing to betray his own realm and even his own allies for money or personal gain.
Kano gives the impression of an arrogant brute, which he is, but is quite intelligent. He has infiltrated several High Security Facilities and often hacks into computer systems, retrieving the information he is looking for. He rises beyond mere brutality and aggression by being sly and cunning. Kano is highly opportunistic and incredibly selfish.
One of his most notable features is his facetious and twisted sense of humor, almost always making light of dire circumstances. He combines the features of a cowardly minion, a lone survivor, a crazed madman, and a ruthless commander. These features have contributed to Kano's constant survival against all odds.
Despite his ruthless nature, Kano does care about his men, as long as they maintain their usefulness. He pays them well, so long as they do their work, and even saved Kabal's life. That said, he has no problem leaving them behind or killing them if they betray him or become less useful, revealing his care for them was nothing, but a façade and only cares about himself and no one else.
But when he is overmatched by a stronger opponent, he is shown to be an extreme coward, it is shown when he begged Scorpion for mercy in Mortal Kombat 11.

Trivia[]
Kano bears some resemblance to the Terminator and Ed Boon stated that his design was based on the T-800's appearance in Terminator 2, when the Terminator's face skin is peeled off, revealing his mechanical face.
When Kano faced the Flash, he stated that he would give Kabal a run for his money.
In the games, Kano was originally intended to be Japanese, but Trevor Goddard's portrayal of Kano in the Mortal Kombat movie was well liked by the developers, who incorporated aspects of it into subsequent games.
A cyborg heavily based on Kano appears at the Bad Anon meeting in the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph. He is one of the villains who reassures Ralph that the way his people treated him was part of the program, and ripped out a zombie's heart as a shout-out to the games.
Kano is also the moniker of a well-known UK grime MC.
Kano was mostly bald in the digitized Mortal Kombat games. The same is true for his past self in Mortal Kombat 11.
Kano is the first character named in the legendary Mortal Kombat theme.
