~ Kanta's thoughts on the zombie apocalypse and expressing his desires. |
Kanta Higurashi is a major antagonist in the 2023 manga/anime series, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. He is an unemployed NEET who leads a group of other fellow workers, who all three either struggled or got fired, into committing every single crime for their own enjoyment and plotting to unleash a horde of zombies against the survivors in Gunma. He is Akira Tendou's arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (who also voices Isaac Foster, Haruchiyo Sanzu and Ghiaccio) in Japanese and by Bryce Papenbrook (who also voices Eren Yeager, Nagito Komaeda and Zeldris) in the English Dub, with both voice actors also voicing Liebe.
Personality[]
Kanta is a petty sociopath who holds a grudge against Akira, his former classmate, out of envy due to the latter's upbeat friendliness and believing he's always been rejected by society, in actuality, it's the other way around. His own laziness and lack of social communication proved to be his own undoing, and to that end, Kanta blamed everyone else besides himself for his insecurities and misery.
He's also proven to be sadistic without boundaries, writing everything on his bucket list like "fire a real gun or use dynamite to blow stuff up" demonstrates his sociopathic tendencies further to the point he had the homicidal gall to unleash a horde of zombies onto Gunma out of spite. Despite this, Kanta was able to open up to his feelings for the first time when Akira chose to sympathize with him, showing tears for a yearning to be with others before his demise. Before that, it was eventually shown deep down he was genuinely insecure about his introverted demeanor and that, while it was his own fault, believed he could never be part of today's society.
Biography[]
Kanta lived in Gunma just like Akira and Kenichiro, as a kid, he and his friends would usually spend their time going to the public pool during summer breaks. This all changed when he was in middle school, Kanta never once communicated or bothered making an effort to be friends with anyone, and this went on even in high school where he simply listened to Rakugo stories and up to their university general education classes, where he encountered Akira Tendo and Kenichiro "Kencho" Ryuzaki but never interacted once and gained a petty grudge against the former. Despite making an effort to change himself through various occasions like overseas internship, being a student volunteer for community cleanup, and getting into a personal development seminar, Kanta would drop out and start living a hedonistic lifestyle in a messy apartment, becoming a NEET with no employment at all.
On the day the pandemic started, Kanta felt the urge for freedom when society started to collapse due to the zombie apocalypse and gave him the sense of doing whatever he wanted. While stealing as many cigarettes as he wanted, he ended up confronting three people - Touko Kanbayashi, Naoki Atenbou, and Shigenobu Kurasugi - hiding from the zombies and found an unused notebook, which sparked a grand idea he had in mind. Kanta would make his own bucket list along with his mutual companions before becoming zombies, which in contrast to Akira's bucket list, he and his entourage are to commit as many crimes as he pleases and write them all down. At some point, Kanta and the rest found their way into the Gunma Village but secretly plotted to wreak havoc by unleashing a horde of zombies barricaded away from the village, intending to have everyone become zombies after being killed.
In the present, he confronts Akira again twice in a row and eventually triggers his hatred for him again. On the night the villagers were minding themselves, Kanta and his gang went to the very barricaded tunnel that was keeping the zombies hoarded, which they began their plan in the process. The first thing to do was have Touko sabotage the electric fences that were keeping the zombies away into becoming a trap for the villagers to prevent their escape and later, Kanta would have the excavator moved out of the way to have the zombies pass through the barricade and begin killing every last one of the villagers in plain sight, leading them to the attack and begin his revenge on society.
As the zombies marched onto the village, people started evacuating into their homes when they caught alert over the horde, however, some of them fought back despite the fact they were too many. Kanta proceeds to use dynamite to destroy some of the villagers' homes to prevent any safety amongst them to further the assault as the village starts to erupt in flames. He would encounter Akira and his friends, eventually realizing he and his gang were the ones behind the zombies being released and giddily admits it, explaining he's just doing what he wants on his bucket list and justifies that everyone's gonna become zombies one day. Akira took notice his notebook is the same as his, only different, which Kanta demanded that Akira become a zombie before him.
When called out, Kanta expressed how much he hated Akira since the day they met in college because of his optimism. As Akira makes contrasts between himself and Kanta, as well as declaring to save everyone here, Kanta declares back as a 'competition' as to whose bucket list will be finished first spitefully so as he and his gang respectfully go after Akira and the rest to stop them from their attack, while at the same time, have them lure the villagers out from hiding to be killed and turned into zombies, seeing it as a game of both "tag" and "hide and seek". While all of his allies got presumably killed and one of them beaten but spared for atonement, Kanta was seen picking up Teruo Tendo, Akira's father, when he was fighting against the zombies to protect his family, seemingly saving his life.
Unfortunately, Kanta planned on using him as a hostage as a means to have Akira left with no choice but to follow his demands; either he becomes a zombie or has his father dropped off to be killed by zombies, mocking his wish to "repay his parents" spitefully. Eventually, the moment he starts doubting that taking his dad hostage wouldn't provoke him into giving in, the door opens to have the three zombies enter and semeingly attack Akira. When he comes out as a "zombie", Kanta laughs out of amusement that he was able to accomplish one of the things from his bucket list. Unfortunately to his surprise, Akira pulls him off from the excavator when his guard was down, this causes to Kanta realize Akira didn't become a zombie, which was a clever plan the latter made to look like he became a zombie through makeup thanks to one of the girls who were with his parents as company.
Upon being tricked, Kanta suffers a mental breakdown and brings up wanting to do the 'same thing' as Akira, something the latter questioned and noticed he wasn't having "fun", which he ends up being bitten by a zombie. Violently kicking and killing the zombie that bit him, Kanta's breakdown worsened to where he was on the verge of crying uncontrollably, as well as remembering some parts of his childhood. Instead of being left for dead, he was comforted and sympathized by Akira, who questioned what he really wanted to do. Fully remembering his past days as a happier kid and realizing what could've been different if he became friends with Akira, Kanta realized all he ever wanted was to be with his friends, which Akira called him a "fool" for everything he's done. Nevertheless, Akira promises to him that should he ever become a zombie, he and Kanta will spend their zombie days by the pool.
Finally letting out his sorrow, Kanta was on the verge of becoming a zombie and pushed Akira away, running into a nearby lake. He starts to envision himself in a pool where a zombified Akira is waiting for him, as a result, Kanta jumps into the lake and likely kills himself to stop the process from happening.

Trivia[]
- There are several differences between Kanta in the manga and anime:
- In the manga, Kanta threatens to murder Akira's father, Teruo, using a garden hoe. During the anime, this scene was cut off for reasons unknown.
- His fate was portrayed differently. In the manga, after being sympathized by Akira, he is left stranded by a large number of zombies surrounding him as he slowly accepts becoming a zombie. In the anime, Kanta pushes Akira away from him and slowly jumps into the lake, committing suicide as a result.
