Too much to drink, Dr. Jones?
~ Kao Kan after Indy drank poison.

Kao Kan is a minor antagonist in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. He is Lao Che’s youngest son and Chen’s younger brother.

He was portrayed by Ric Young.

Biography[]

Kao Kan's scandals were covered up only through his father's control over Shanghai officials. As part of Lao's criminal enterprise, Kao Kan was positioned as a chief lieutenant alongside his half-brother Chen. In 1935, at the Obi Wan Club in Shanghai, Kao Kan with his father and brother must meet Indiana Jones to exchange Nurhachi's ashes and diamonds. The deception didn't work and Kao Kan was severed. At the club, in a second of Jones's distraction, Kao Kan puts poison in his champagne glass. Next, Kao Kan helped cover up the shooting of Indy's partner Wu Han by seating the gunshot victim in a chair before he died.

After Jones kills Chen with a flambéed pigeon skewer, Kan tries to kill Jones, but is stopped when he throws a table at him. Then Kan opens fire in the club with a machine gun, but Jones and Willie Shot flee through a window and land in a car driven by Short Round, with Lao Che and Kan chasing them through the streets of Shanghai, until airport where Indy and his friends flee on a plane that, unbeknownst to them, is owned by Lao. Kan and Lao laugh in supposed triumph, waving goodbye to Indy and the pilots, who later leave the plane to crash in the Himalayas. However, Indy and his allies eventually survive.
