Biography[]
Kar Vastor was one of the natives of the Korunnai on Haruun Kal. All the tribe were Force sensitive, with it believed they were descended from the crew of a crashed Jedi ship. Vastor was a distant cousin of Mace Windu. When he was young, he witnessed the murder of his family by crooked jungle prospectors and was left to survive alone in the jungle for a year. The experience greatly enhanced his connection to the Force but left him unable to communicate verbally. His speech sounded like growls and grunts, which he could allow anyone he chose to understand using the Force.
Vastor became one of the leading forces behind the Summertime War: The actions of the prospectors had caused the Korunnai to see all Balawai, offworlders who had come to the planet and settled in cities, as the enemy, leading to intermittent conflict between them. The conflict became of galactic interest during the Clone Wars when the city militia began to be supplied by the Separatists, who hoped to annexe the world. The Jedi sent Depa Billaba to aid the Korunnai in a guerilla war against them. Joining up with Vastor, Depa soon followed him into savagery, massacring any civilians they found in the jungle. Anyone they captured was sent into the jungle where they invariably died. Vastor and Depa allowed the New Republic to receive evidence of an apparent atrocity in order to lure Mace Windu to the planet.
On Mace's arrival, Vastor sent a group of youngers led by Nick Rostu to retrieve him. Mace and Vastor encountered each other for the first time when they became caught up in an accident involving a vehicle full of Balawai children. Vastor killed most of the Balawai present, including a boy, Terrel Nakay, who had stabbed two helpless Korunnai, Chalk and Lesh. Macu convinced Nick to help him guide the other prisoners to where the Balawai could pick them up. He then goaded Vastor into a fight, knowing Vastor would defeat him and thus not see him as a threat.
Vastor and Depa hoped to convince Mace that the Jedi's philosophy was wrong and only savagery could win the war. When the militia attacked their encampment, Mace helped Vastor defeat them and then the group travelled to the capital, Pelek Baw, backed up by clone troopers. Once they had gained control of the militia's drone ships, Vastor betrayed Mace and used them to carry out acts of indiscriminate bombing, killing many civilians. Mace ended up convincing militia leader Colonel Guptun to change sides to the Republic and together they launched an attack on the bunker. The resulting fighting left nearly everyone killed or injured, until Mace and Vastor were the only ones left fighting while Guptun shut down the drones. Mace used the Force to fling a discarded vibro-shield which passed straight through Vastor's shield and impaled him. He was taken into custody by the New Republic, charged with crimes against civilisation.
Vastor spent some time in the spice mines on Kessel, especially after the Republic became the Empire. He probably escaped in a violent manner, since Nick later recalled him being responsible for atrocities on Kessel and Nar Shadda in addition to Haruun Kal. He spent decades as a fugitive before falling under the influence of Lord Cronal, who possessed him and used him as a formidable foot soldier during the Battle of Mindor. Under Cronal's influence, Vastor attacked Luke Skywalker but Luke managed to purge him of Cronal's influence, then used Vastor's Force connection to Cronal to purge Cronal's control of the mineral meltmassif through which he had directed his shadow troopers, destroying Cronal's body. Left marooned with Luke on a fragment of Mindor, destroyed during the battle, Vastor noted he had hoped all the Jedi were dead but considered Luke superior to the Jedi of the Old Republic. Their fragment was eventually towed to safety by R2-D2. Vastor was reunited with Nick and his girlfriend Aeona Cantor and left with them to search for any trace of Cronal, who they correctly suspected had survived.
