Prince Karim is a supporting antagonist in Netflix‘s The Dragon Prince franchise.
He is the brother of Janai and Khessa, who, while initialy a good person, became more treacherous after Janai made it clear that she wanted a new version of Lux Aurea with elves and humans living together.
He is voiced by Luc Roderique.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Karim was born as the only brother of Janai and Khessa, and the great-grandson of Queen Aditi. When he was a child, Karim and his friend Osato played a game called Bannerman's Run, with Osato always protecting him while Karim carried the banner of the game to the winning point.
After Khessa's death at the hands of Aaravos and the corruption of the Sunforge, he and Janai would make a ceremony for Khessa, where they would make her favourite dance in her memory.
One day, Karim and Osato tried to stop the corruption of the Sunfire forge, but they were unable to get to it and decided to get out of Lux Aurea. Outside of the city walls, he noticed that Osato had been corrupted from his left hand to his soldier, so in order to stop the corruption, a human named Tijana cut off his arm.
However, Osato still got corrupted by the Sunforge's poison, and attacked Tijana before Karim blinded him, which gave Tijana the chance to stab Osato, killing him.
Broken by the death of his childhood friend, Karim lashed out at Tijana for killing Osato, and pushed her away. After she left, Karim burried his friend's body, and decided to use Osato's glove on his right hand.
Because of the Sunforge's corruption, the people of Lux Aurea were forced to leave their city because of dark magic creatures made from the corrupted Sunforge, which also corrupted several sunfire elves, and for the next two years, they were unable to get the city back. Janai would then create a camp for the people of Lux Aurea with the help of Amaya and other humans.
After a while, Janai and Amaya started dating, which caused Karim to believe that the humans were more than just guests, which is what Janai wanted, but Karim believed that humans couldn't be together, as it would ruin the traditions and culture of the Sunfire Elves.
Book 4: Earth[]
After Janai proposed to Amaya and she accepted it, Karim told his sister that they shouldn't get married, as it would be made a symbol between elves and humans, but Janai refused. Later, after a woman named Lucia put down a candle a Sunfire Elf was using to honor his mother, Karim made a trial for Lucia, as he wanted killed because it would prove that humans and elves should be punished the same way for the same crime regardless if they were unaware of it, which in Lucia's case, the punishment would be death.
During the trial, Karim would pressure Janai to make her guilty and have Lucia executed for her crimes, but after the trial was over, Janai chose to spare Lucia and instead put her in community service. Janai would then bring Karim to a tree that held the Sun Seed, with Janai telling Karim that she planned to create a new Lux Aurea, even if it took so long that they wouldn't be alive to see it complete.
Because of this, Karim told his lover Miyana that Janai planned to destroy the Sunfire Elves' entire culture and that she had to be killed, and Karim told her that he would demand for a royal blood duel, where he and Janai would fight to the death, just like two brothers did once to determine who would be the ruler of Lux Aurea.
After Janai recieved the message, she tried to convince her brother that she wouldn't fight him, and that the royal blood duel was turned illegal by Queen Aditi. However, Karim refused to listen, and told Janai that if she didn't fight him, then he would become the king of the Sunfire Elves.
Because of this, Janai was forced to fight her brother, and by the end of the duel, Janai was able to defeat Karim, but still refused to kill him and instead had him arrested for his crimes. Karim would then tell Janai that she couldn't arrest him because it was in the Sunfire Elves' history and that it demanded her to kill him, but Janai told him that history demanded nothing and that she would make her own destiny and a brighter future for Lux Aurea before Karim was arrested by the Six Crowns.
Book 5: Ocean[]
Karim was banished into the dessert and forced to give up all of his possessions, even a ring given to him by his mother. After wandering for a few days, Karim realized that he was being followed. In order to get the jump on his stalker, he hid behind some rocks and ambushed him, only to discover that it was Lux Aurea's old priest Pharos. Pharos claimed he had something to show the Karim and bade the prince to follow him.
Pharos brought Karim to a dark cave inhabited by Sol Regem, the ancient once dragon king, who famously hated humans. Karim asked Sol Regem to help him force the humans out of Xadia, but he refused, saying that he could do nothing now that he was blind, and demanding that Karim and Pharos leave. They complied, but Karim began to make a plan to give Sol Regem his sight back.
In order to give Sol Regem his sight back, Karim needed the Sun Seed. So, he confronted Kim'dael, a Moonshadow Elf assassin who wore a necklace that she couldn't remove and that slowly tightened. The only person who could free her from the necklace was a member of the Sunfire Elf royal familly. Karim struck a deal with the Moonshadow elf, telling her that if she got him the seed, he would free her from her necklace, Kim'dael agreed.
Kim would sneak to the Janai's camp to get the Sun Seed, but would find out Janai hid it, so she brought Janai to her brother so they could use her as a hostage to force the people at Janai's camp give them the Sun Seed, and Karim told them by sending Pharos to meet them to give the Sun Seed to Miyana. While waiting for Miyana to arrive, Karim and Kim'dael see someone in a horse coming to them, so Karim goes to it thinking it's Miyana, only to be revealed to be Amaya in disguise and attacks Karim.
Kim'dael then holds Janai hostage so they could talk about their deal. During this, Karim tells Kim to kill Janai, but she refused out of fear that it could kill her as well. Karim then tries to release Kim'dael of her debt so she could kill Janai, but failed due to Janai being the queen. Desperate, Karim tells Kim'dael to kill Janai, and after she refuses, Karim tries to kill Janai himself, but is stopped by Amaya, who makes Kim'dael free her and leave by saying that if Kim killed her Amaya would kill Karim, ending the bloodline and killing Kim as well.
However, while Amaya and Janai were hugging each other after she was released, Pharos used a spell to blind them long enough so he could escape with Karim. While hiding in a cave, Miyana appeared with a Sun Seed, revealing that she was still on his side, while also bringing an army to help Karim in his goals.
Appearance[]
Karim is a lanky looking Sunfire Elf, who happens to be a mage. Like most of his species, he has dark skin and dark orange eyes. He has a gold headpiece that holds back his short hair while both sides of it is shaved and has a unique looking beard. Since Karim is a mage, he of course would present himself as such. His outfit consist of a unique looking cape that covers half of his body and a dark tunic that is similar to the Moonshadow Elves and a belt around it. Besides that he wears jewelry like earrings, the golden headpiece, and a ring, all of these shows his status as a prince of the Sunfire Elves. Karim also holds a staff around as a weapon but it broke after his fight with Janai.
In season 5, Karim has been stripped of all things representing his royal status leaving him with a simple black undershirt, black pants, and boots.
Personality[]
Originally, Karim was a nice and gentle brother, who would follow his kingdom's traditions and loved both of his sisters deeply. After Khessa's death, Karim and Janai would honor her memory by lighting a Soul Candle for her and performing her favorite dances in her memory. He also initially approved Janai becoming the new queen of Lux Aurea.
However, after Janai and Amaya started dating and eventually got engaged, Karim was against it, as it would make it a symbol that humans and elves were going to be together and that humans were not just guests, and after Janai made it clear that it was her intentions to do so and that she planned to create a new Lux Aurea, the two became enemies and Karim tried to kill his sister. Overall, his desire to follow his kingdom's former costumes and rules turned him into a delusional and power-hungry individual that would kill his family so everything could stay the same.
Karim's hatred towards humans stems from the fact that he believes that his childhood friend Osato died because of a human. He cared deeply for Osato and his death affected him so much that he became determined to bring everything to how it was before the corruption of the Sunforge.
