Karl "Red" Cooper is the main antagonist of the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode "Killer". Cooper is a released bank robber and a killer, who's the first criminal in the show to be identified at the start of the episode to follow his crimes alongside the investigation.

He's portrayed by William Sadler.

Biography

Cooper retired from the Army Reserve to become part of an accomplished bank robbery crew. He ended up with the nicknamed "Red" due to his constant history of debt. One of his associates, Clayton Nash, was busted for armored car theft and turned state's evidence by selling out his other associates, including Cooper. Cooper spend seven years in federal prison, then went off the grid after his release. What really happened was he moved to Ohio, married his girlfriend Janice, and had a daughter with her, Maddie. Nash was attending AA meetings, and once he reached the making amends step in 2006, he went to Cooper to own up to the deal he struck. Cooper's rage toward Nash resurfaced and he snapped, finding Nash in a motel in Vegas and shooting him with a silenced Walter pistol.

On the drive away, he was hit by drunk teenager, Ally Sullivan, who ran a red light. She's insistent on reporting the accident for their insurance claims, but Cooper didn't want to get caught without an alibi from his time delays. He assumed he convinced Ally to not call, but she texted his license plate on her phone, and as reluctant as Cooper was, he snapped her neck and fled. Cooper burned his car and clothes he wore that night, and seeing a public announcement on Ally's murder and a plea for information, Cooper sends Ally's father Jack a massive amount of cash from his heists. He then makes his lawyer get him blank credit cards and DMVs so Cooper can make fake IDs and escape, as online sleuths have connected Ally's and Nash's murders.

Janice pulls away from Cooper, as she usually went into his computer to check on him, but he changed his password. When she finds his stash of fake ID and believes he's back to robberies, Cooper confesses his murders to her. Janice could handle Nash dying, but she kicks him out for killing Ally. The CSIs, in the meantime, identified Cooper from his and Nash's gang's group photo, as well as his palm print on Ally's car. They go to Janice and, with the evidence they have in their possession and from the Cooper house, they tell her to call Cooper and let him know Maddy will be removed from Janice's custody if he doesn't surrender. Cooper abandons his escape at a bus station and turns himself in to a nearby policeman. He's arrested and book, and when Gil Grissom prints Cooper, he asks Grissom what he did wrong. Grissom simply replies, "You killed two people." Cooper is later incarcerated for murder.
