“ | I'm not a fucking Nazi skinhead. I'm a white nationalist. And you're on the fucking ground, too, baldy. | „ |
~ Sankey to her fellow supremacist, Brandy Epps. |
Kasey Sankey is a supporting antagonist in seasons four and five of the Netflix dramedy series Orange is the New Black.
She is an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary's minimum security prison who is a central figure of the White Supremacist movement.
She is portrayed by Kelly Karbacz.
Physical appearance[]
Sankey is a Caucasian woman with dirty blonde hair and tanned skin. She is only ever seen with her hair down, which is often messy and greasy.
Personality[]
Kasey's personality is first introduced as a brassy, brusque racist. She has a very low opinion of anyone who isn't white and, whilst doesn't self identify as a Nazi, clearly sympathises with them. She believes in tribalism and has a violent streak when she feels that she is being 'oppressed'. Sankey is shown to have element of scruples when refusing to hit Suzanne Warren (although Sankey does refer to her as a 'retard').
After Sankey is moved to FDC Cleveland after the prison riot, it is clear that she is trying to work on her attitudes and has discovered that she has a knack for poetry, and is also attracted to women.
Biography[]
Background[]
Before her incarceration, Sankey was married to a man named Anders, with whom she had a daughter with, Brittany. When she learned she was going to be incarcerated, Anders and Sankey agreed that he could have sex with her best friend so long as the relationship did not become romantic. However, Anders breaks this agreement and begins to see her romantically, without telling Sankey. Sankey has a brother who runs the Philadelphia wing of the Aryan Brotherhood.
Orange is the New Black[]
After MCC introduces an overwhelming amount of new prisoners as part of budget cuts, Sankey and her friends immediately try to assert dominance (despite recognising that the prison population is now predominately populated by Latin Americans). Piper Chapman attempts to resolve the prison's growing tension by hosting a session for inmates to raise concerns and become mentors to reassert a sense of care in the prison again. However, this descends into a white power chant which is strongly encouraged by Sankey's vociferousness.
Sankey and her friends begin to follow Chapman around, believing her to be the spearhead. Sankey becomes highly active in the "carers" group, and begins targeting non-white inmates. On one occasion Sankey and Leanne Taylor, and Angie Rice target Maria Ruiz' group which becomes almost violent. When the guards intervene, it becomes clear that they are in support of the white power movement.
After the death of inmate Poussey Washington, Sankey shows very little remorse. Her group mocks her passing which infuriates Poussey's friends and, again, almost turns violent. Once Sankey realises that her group would likely lose the fight and that she was being unreasonable, she calls her friends away.
After a riot breaks out in the prison, Sankey and her friends use the opportunity to raid the kitchen, but are trapped with Frieda Berlin by Stratman and Blake who realise they cannot leave. Frieda's survivalist upbringing allows them to escape. Sankey and her friends thank Frieda and take the COs to the hostage group. Sankey's group form an alliance with Latina inmates Ouija and Pidge (Ruiz' henchwomen) to start a coffee bar. When the CERT team storms the prison to deescalate the riot, Sankey, her group, Ouija and Pidge, use their resources in the dorms to create booby-traps which delays the storm. Ultimately, they are restrained by the officers in straight-blankets and carried out.
Sankey is transferred to FDC Cleveland after the riot and is seen in the series finale confessing her attraction to Asian inmate Brook Soso, indicating Sankey has begun to overcome her xenophobia and prejudice. She writes Soso a poem, showing a newer, sensitive Sankey.
