Katharine Parker is the main antagonist of the 1988 romantic comedy-drama movie Working Girl.

She was portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

Biography[]

She is a Boston financial executive who transfers to New York at the time that secretary Tess McGill needs another new boss having just struck out with two others. The two start out on good terms as Tess can identify with another woman and idealizes Katharine as the hard-working woman she herself wants to be. That changes when after Katharine has broken her leg skiing, Tess discovers Katharine intended to pass off an idea of a merger that she shot down earlier on as her own and take the credit for it. Katharine was considered for AFI's list of the 50 greatest movie villains, but did not make the final cut.

Trivia[]

  • Tess McGill suggests that their new client, Trask Industries (owned by Oren Trask) should invest in radio to gain a foothold in media for the Wall Street investment bank. she works for. Katharine listened to the idea and says she will pass it through some people. Later, she says the idea was never well received before Katharine broke her leg skiing in Europe and asked Tess to house-sit.
