~ Kaufman to his men in the Upper East Side apartments. |
Kaufman is a major antagonist in the 2003 video game Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. He was the lieutenant and field leader of Vladimir Lem's Cleaner commandos.
He was voiced by Gregory Sims, who also voiced Cam Jones in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Biography[]
Background[]
Little is known about Kaufman's life prior to the Cleaner case, including his real name. At some point, between 2001 and 2003, he joined the Squeaky Cleaning Company, a front organization for a group of hitmen hired guns led by Vladimir Lem, head of the Russian Mob in New York City, as part of a ploy to take over the clandestine organization known as the Inner Circle. He eventually rose through ranks and become the group's field leader, and became widely known amongst the Cleaners as a "bad motherf-cker" that they viewed with respect.
Cleaner Case[]
In 2003, Kaufman and the Cleaners went to the warehouse of arms dealer Annie Finn, an associate of Lem's, to assault the warehouse as part of a false flag operation to frame Punchinello Underboss Vinnie Gognitti. Complications arose when NYPD Detective Max Payne arrived at the warehouse to investigate the scene. While Max was able to kill many of the Cleaners in the warehouse, he failed to save Annie. During the shoot-out, he learned of Kaufman's name, but did not catch a glimpse of the latter, as he and his men would later flee the warehouse, while also attempting, and failing, to run over Max.
Later that night, Kaufman ordered his men to storm Max's apartment complex, which they had been spying on for months, in order to kill him before he could interview with Lem's plan. Despite their efforts, Max, with the warnings of contract killer Mona Sax and the assistance of some of his neighbors, managed to escape the apartment alive. By this point, he had already begun working on a case based on the Cleaner's recent activities, with Kaufman as one of the main suspects, along with Gognitti, of whom Lem had convinced Max was paying the Cleaners, though Max did not initially know what Kaufman looked like.
Later, Lem had Kaufman and the Cleaners launch an attack on a nearby apartment complex to wipe out the building's residents, including a man named Cocoran, as they were members of the Inner Circle aligned with the faction of the group's leader, Alfred Woden. Max and Mona, in a failed attempt to save Cocoran, traveled to the building and fought through the Cleaners. However, as Max fought the Cleaners, Kaufman decided to take care of matters personally. He and his men stepped out of an elevator Max was near, and he told his men to find and kill the detective. A massive shoot-out ensued that ultimately resulted in Max emerging victorious and killing Kaufman.
Despite his death, the Cleaners, now under Lem's direct command, continued their operations, but would later be wiped out along with their leader later that same night.
