Kazanak was a secondary antagonist in the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel The Romulan Prize.
A member of the Romulan nobility, he was the son of a Romulan nobleman and held the rank of Lord in the Romulan Empire. His father was closely allied with Praetor Darok. Like many other Romulans he believed in the inherent superiority of the Romulan race and looked at other races as lesser beings to be enslaved or killed. Kazanak looked forward to another war with the humans and Federation that he believed would put them all in their proper place.
A starship designer by trade, Kazanak was the chief designer of the D'Kazanak-class warbird, which was intended to compete head to head with the FederationStarfleet'sGalaxy-class and newer vessels. He supervised the construction of the unnamed prototype D'Kazanak-class ship at a secret base in orbit of a distant colony world, a vessel that was later named IRW Syrinx by Praetor Darok.
He accompanied the Syrinx to observe how the ship ran under actual conditions, and had overall command of the mission to capture the Enterprise and take it to Hermeticus II. The planet was a giant interstellar ark created by a race of shape shifters called the Ambimorphs - who also hosted a colony comprised of the crew of the Starfleet vessel USS Independence and their descendants. Valak left Kazanak in command when he went to investigate Hermeticus II for himself. Kazanak made it clear to other Romulans such as Korak that he would enslave or kill the Enterprise crew if Valak failed to return.
Before Kazanak could act on his plans, the Romulans were all captured by the Ambimorphs, including Kazanak. Kazanak and all the other Romulans both on Syrinx and Enterprise were transported to the surface of Hermeticus II as the giant starship left to return to the Ambimorph home system, forced to remain aboard for the extended journey - a journey that would likely take the rest of Kazanak's life.
After the destruction of the Syrinx and Independence, a group of Ambimorphs stayed behind to assume Romulan identities and infiltrate the Empire to prepare it for peaceful first contact. One of those Ambimorphs took the form of Kazanak. Soon rescued, Kazanak's Ambimorph replacement told the Romulan government that there had been serious flaws in the design of D'Kazanak-class ships. Kazanak's replacement and the other disguised Ambimorphs convinced the Romulan government to abandon plans to mass-produce more D'Kazanak-class ships. The replacement declared the design a failure and left starship design, intent on becoming a member of the Romulan government so that he could steer it away from conquest.
