Kazuto Arase is a supporting antagonist in Yakuza and its remake Yakuza Kiwami, as well as a secret boss in Yakuza 3. He served as a member of the Nishikiyama Family and was the sworn brother of Shinji Tanaka. After the events of the first game, he was kicked out of the clan, at which time he founded the anti-yakuza group The Reapers.
He is voiced by Hayato Horiuchi.
Appearance[]
Arase is a man of slender build, with slicked back hair and sunglasses. He wears a long red trench coat with a black undershirt in all of his appearances.
Personality[]
Arase is a violent and unpredictable man, and didn't have too many friends because of this fact. He doesn't flinch at any order, even killing his own oath brother. After losing to Kiryu in the first game, he developed a vendetta so profound that he devoted the rest of his life to killing him.
Biography[]
Arase is first seen immediately before his boss fight, where it is revealed he killed Reina and had his men mortally wound Shinji. Kiryu sees Shinji in the process of dying, which prompts Arase to reveal himself and the bloodied corpse of Reina. This enrages Kiryu, causing him to beat Arase senseless.
After his failure to kill Kiryu, Arase was loathed by his peers and eventually expelled from the Nishikiyama Family. Out of hatred, he decided to form the Reapers, a group of hitmen composed of disgraced yakuza with the ultimate goal of taking revenge on Kiryu.
Kiryu later encountered him again in 2009, where after Kiryu fought his way through the Reapers, he finally had a chance at revenge. Before their fight, Arase blames all of his problems on Kiryu, and claims he ruined his life. After Kiryu defeated the gunslinger and his second-in-command, Arase disbanded the Reapers and vowed to have another duel with Kiryu. It is currently unknown if and when he will battle him again.
Trivia[]
- Arase also appeared as a major character in the non-canon spin-off, Yakuza: Dead Souls.
- Arase is the only major member of the 2005 lineup of the Nishikiyama Family to still currently be alive.
