~ Keel's last words before turning into LCL during the Third Impact.

Chairman Keel Lorenz is the secondary antagonist of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series and the film The End of Evangelion.

He is the enigmatic leader of the mysterious SEELE organization and the chairman of the ominous Human Instrumentality Committee.

He was voiced by Mugihito in the Japanese version, while in English, he was voiced in the original ADV Films dub of the TV series by Rick Peeples, Tom Booker in their dub of Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion, Bill Jenkins in the Funimation dub of the Rebuild movie series, and D.C. Douglas in the Netflix dub.

Appearance[]

Keel appears to be an older man with gray hair and eyebrows, presumably being around his sixties. He wears what appears to be a green long-coat with white ends on his collar and yellow around the middle edges of his coat. He also appears to wear a black belt around the middle.

Most notably, Keel wears a cybernetic visor on his head that covers his eyes, seemingly to help him see. After turning into LCL, its revealed that he had much more cybernetic implants than what one would have thought, seemingly having a replacement for his spine and other key organs. It is completely unknown why he got them however.

History[]

Little is known about Keel, but it is shown that he is the chairman of the five-man subgroup of SEELE, which directly oversees NERV's Evangelion project (as well as their secret Human Instrumentality Project), and functions by working through the UN, secretly pulling the strings of world governments.

Keel was active within SEELE's machinations before Second Impact and was involved along with Gendo in the United Nations' cover-up of the true nature of the disaster involving Adam and the Katsuragi Expedition. Through SEELE, Keel secretly backed Gehirn and later its successor organization, NERV, in their creation of the Evangelion project.

At some point between the Second Impact and 2015, most of Keel's body, below the neck, was replaced with cybernetic implants. Although he uses a visor to see, Keel still possesses eyes (as indicated by production drawings). When the organic components of his body became LCL, the remaining mechanical components were left behind, and appear to include most of his spinal column.
