“ | I don't understand the value of life or its meaning. I'm sure I won't be able to make that decision in the future either. But what I need to decide now is... -For my ideals. | „ |

~ Kuzuryu to Mira Kano. |
Keiichi Kuzuryu (known as the King of Diamonds) is one of the main antagonists of the Netflix show and manga series Alice in Borderland. He first appears as a high-ranking Beach executive (as the number two in the TV series). After the end of the First Stage, it is revealed that he is one of the game masters controlling the games in the Borderlands behind the scenes.
In the manga, it is revealed that after he arrived to the Borderlands, he became close friends with Mira Kano, Isao Shirabi and Ginji Kyuma, with them eventually deciding to become citizens to run the games and spend more time together.
He is portrayed by Tsuyoshi Abe. In the English dub, he is voiced by Arthur Holden.
Personality[]
He appears to be very quiet and only speaks when necessary. He seems cold and aloof in how he behaves. Despite this, he firmly believes in justice and equality. His beliefs are highlighted in a scene where he oversees the Beach engulfed in flames with Mira Kano. She looks over at him, concerned with how unenthusiastic he seems, and he states that if he wants to his game to be fair.
In the end, he also proves to be a very idealistic and hopeful person as shown in his conversation with Momoka and Chishiya.
Biography[]
Background[]
Before he was transported to the Borderlands, he used to be an international attorney. We are shown in a flashback while he is talking to a Colleague about an environmental issue from a company that killed twenty people. The colleague rejects this idea, thinking that the diseases that the people in the community caught were caused by something else. This leads to a discussion about the law, and in this discussion, his colleague begins talking about how the law works and how it isn't truly meant to protect the weak from the powerful.
However, Kuzuryu recites the law in how he sees it, believing that everyone is equal under the law but is dismissed by his colleague as him being naïve and idealistic. This gives Kuzuryu a taste of reality that the world is overwhelmed with injustice, and he feels complicit in the injustices of society.
The Beach[]
Once he is transported to the Borderlands he starts off as a player but once he became a citizen, he decided to infiltrate the Beach and disguise himself as a player along with Mira Kano, when Aguni and Hatter officially established it.
While infiltrating the Beach executives, he would follow the lead of Mira Kano and observe the behaviour of the Beach members as an executive.
When it's discovered that Hatter is dead, the original pan was for Kuzuryu to succeed Hatter in commanding the beach as he is the Number Two. However they are taken by surprise when Niragi interrupts as he and the Militants demand making Aguni the new leader instead, using threats of violence and intimidation to get everyone in the room to vote Aguni.
Ten of Hearts[]
Once Aguni takes over and Arisu is imprisoned by the Militants, Mira and Kuzuryu decide now is the time to begin the Ten of Hearts, which Momoka volunteers to be the Witch in the Ten of Hearts by stabbing herself with a reverse grip on the knife.
However, before Momoka continues with her decision. Kuzuryu approaches her and questions why she volunteered to be the witch and take her own life, to which she responds that she's doing it for ideals. Momoka elaborates by talking about how precious life is and reveals to him how hopeful she is that the Beach members are not bad people. Momoka states firmly that if she is going to die, she's going to do it for her ideals.
Momoka's answer stuck with Kuzuryu and would go on to move him in a way no one else could.
After the Beach members have cleared the Ten of Hearts, the Beach is engulfed in flames and from a distance we see both Mira and Kuzuryu watch as the building burns discussing that it is now their turn to make their own games.
King of Diamonds[]
The next time we see Kuzuyru is in his own game, in which the venue takes place in the Supreme Court, being a reference to Kuzuryu's career as an international attorney. This causes Chishiya to raise questions towards Kuzuyru, like what the King of Diamonds was doing at the Beach.
When the game starts, Kuzuyru outsmarts just about everyone in the game getting closest to the final score just about everytime. After 3 players are eliminated from the game, it all comes down to Chishiya and Kuzuryu.
Chishiya converses with Kuzuyru and about himself and why he is so desperate to make everything fair, which later devolves into a discussion about what the value of a life is in which Kuzuryu admits that he doesn't know which lives are worth saving or not or what the difference between the two are.
During their conversation they talk about the bad things they've witnessed in their lives, in which Kuzuryu recalls a time in his life where a company didn't want to pay a settlement which resulted in people dying due to not having the proper treatment available. Chishiya then tells him that he must know there is no such thing as fairness or equality in this world, to which Kuzuryu annoyingly replies that there isn't and so that's why they should be fighting.
After their conversation, Chishiya tells Kuzuryu he's going to pick 100 to which Kuzuryu asks him if he's insane and that the only way he will survive is if he chooses 0, to which Chishiya tells him that he is a life that is charging toward death and that Kuzuryu must choose whether if the life has value or not.
Kuzuryu hesitates for a bit, but then chooses 0 so they can proceed to Round 14, and in Round 14 Chishiya picks 100 again and Kuzuryu picks 0. On it's surface this seems like it's just an effort to even out the game and make it fair.
Round 15 begins, Kuzuryu speculates what Chishiya is doing and Chishiya refers again how he wants Kuzuryu to decide on Chishiya's life, and so he picks up the tablet and shows Kuzuryu the number that Chishiya chose. Giving Kuzuryu a chance to make his own decision, a decision where if Kuzuryu chooses 1, he will win and have Chishiya killed, but chooses 0 and he will lose and die.
With this decision in mind, he thinks back to the time when Momoka volunteers to take the role of Witch even though it would mean Momoka's life would end. After thinking about that moment Kuzuryu redeems himself and picks 0, choosing to die rather than betray his ideals.
“ | At last, I think I've been able to... Decide how I want to live. It's thanks to you. | „ |
~ Kuzuryu redeeming himself and thanking Chishiya |
This event would stick with Chishiya and move him in an impactful way later on, similarly to how Momoka moved Kuzuryu.
