Kelvin Cornwell is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior episode “The Girl in the Blue Mask”. Cornwell is a violent murderer and mutilator obsessed with covering up his domestic abuse by using other people’s body tissues to treat the wounds of his daughter he disfigured.
He’s portrayed by J.D. Walsh.
Biography[]
Cornwell drank and beat his wife and daughter Kristi Anna. Kristi Anna’s mother took her for their safety and filed for divorce in 2007, but Cornwell snatched Kristi Anna and ran off with her, changing their last names to Sharpenburger. Cromwell became even more violent, hating Kristi Anna for resembling her mother. It came to a head when Cornwell burned Kristi Anna’s face on the left side on a running stove. He tried to make her tell the ER it was a “fireplace accident”, but Kristi Anna told the truth. In spite of the police being called, Cornwell ran off with Kristi Anna yet again, the police unable to track him since he gave the alias “Mr. Smith”. Having reduced Kristi Anna to wearing a blue burn mask, Cornwell was done drinking and tried to repay Kristi Anna by treating her himself with drugs and salves. Yet still unstable, Cornell wanted to gift Kristi Anna with a new face for her approaching sixteenth birthday in 2011.
Cornwell used his implements as a specialty painter for incapacitation and skinning faces of various random people in the hopes he could transplant the face onto Kristi Anna. In separate attacks, he chloroformed and beat with a mallet Amy Sherigan and Sergeant David Clayford, skinning half of Amy’s face off with a knife and half of Sergeant Clayford’s off with an air pressure gun; they both died from the violent, inexperienced mutilations, more than a week apart. He then tasered Cindy Shearin the next day, successfully cutting off half her face with a razor blade without killing her. As he was furious the transplant didn’t fit, he kidnapped Dawn Taggert that evening, holding her captive for a direct transplant. The Red Cell Team and local law enforcement stopped Cornwall from killing her and endangering Kristi Anna, arresting and incarcerating him.
Trivia[]
- Cornwell is inspired by Dr. Génessier, the main antagonist of the French horror film Eyes without a Face, a mad scientist who kills women to skin their faces and transplant their tissue onto his daughter Christiane’s disfigured face, while she hides from the world and covers her face with a mask.
