Kenji Kon is the deuteragonist of the 2020 Netflix series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and the tritagonist its 2024 sequel series, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory.

He is voiced by Ryan Potter.

Biography[]

Season 5[]

Reunited[]

The Final Test[]

Battle Lines[]

Evasive Action[]

After helping his father lock up the other campers and leaving them on Mantah Corp Island, Kenji starts to feel regret when they reach his penthouse and questions his father if he made the right choice. Daniel assures him that he did and he’s proud of him. However, Kenj’s happiness is cut short when Hawkes enters and he realizes Daniel hired him. Kenji is upset how his father can hire a bad guy like Hawkes, but only thinks Daniel is to credulous as he seemes to surrond himself with many bad guys while Mae Turner has another opinion.

Shaky Ground[]

Kenji brainwashes Toro to stop him from eating Hawkes.

Out of the Pack[]

As they wait for Dodgson and Daniel to return from their hunt at the ruin of the old visitor center of Jurassic Park, Mae sees that Kenji looks sad and asks him if he is alright. Kenji answers that he just does everything to please his father. At one point, he treats Kenji as his partner and colleague and at the next is he just a big disappointment again. Mae then tells Kenji that he should not need to gain money for his father to deserve his love which makes Kenji shocked as he starts to realize that Daniel's love for him is conditional. Daniel and Dodgson then arrives from their hunt witch a captured Dimorphodon and Limbo the Baryonyx.

As Daniel and Kenji turn away from each other Kenji gets a look on his face that shows how he starts to realize that his dad actually only shows love for him when he manages to get money for him, as Mae earlier mentioned, which makes Kenji start to doubt his choice to join Daniel's side since Daniel hired Hawkes.

The Leap[]

Kenji did not appear in this episode.

Clean Break[]

Kenji is the only one of the campers to appear in this episode who probably takes place the same time as the previous episode The Leap. He is seen still controlling Toro, but has changed back to his original clothing as he has become more questionable on his choice to joining his father's side after what Mae told him earlier and his doubts makes him no longer happy to be at his father's side as before.

Kenji is shocked when he sees that it is Bumpy who is inside the truck put under mind control. He is shocked over what his father has done despite promising not to do it. He promises Bumpy that he will save her, as he at the same time realizes two things: that his friends were right about his father, who is an evil man who doesn't even care about his own son's wishes to leave Bumpy outside of the operation, and that he disowned his loyal friends for a cruel, loveless father. This finally turns Kenji against his father, but he still pretends to be on Daniel's side to not make him suspicious.

The Core[]

Kenji appears near the end of the episode controlling Toro still secretly reformed, having no doubt his friends is spying on him thinking that Kenji is still on Daniel's side as he helps control the dinosaur.

Arrival[]

Back at Mantah Corp Island Kenji is told by Daniel (who still doesn't know that his actions towards Bumpy have secretly turned his son against him) why he has captured Bumpy. He mentions that the other campers escaped and he maybe will be forced to motivate them if they try to do anything dangerous again. Kenji seems interested in hearing about his friends managing to escape and decides to make things harder for his father by still pretending to be on his side in order to help his friends. Daniel puts the twins in charge of guarding the dinosaurs even if he does not completely trust them, and Kenji doesn't seem to like them as he probably knows about how they mistreat the dinosaurs. Kenji follows his father along with Hawkes and Kadinas to get the control chips in the lab, waiting for a moment to strike at Daniel.

Furious that Bumpy has been captured and put under mind control, Ben tackles Kenji to the ground, holding him as he is calling Kenji a jerk and angrily asks how he could allow Daniel to mind control Bumpy. Kenji swears that he tried to stop it and Ben asks why he should believe him. Kenji cannot answer and Ben lets go of him. As Ben goes back to spy on the twins, Kenji rises behind him, admitting that he should have listened to the other campers' warnings about his father and even if he doesn't expect any forgiveness from them, he mentions that he is so, so sorry for his actions. Ben says that he wants to trust Kenji, but doesn't know if he can. Kenji promises to help Ben get Bumpy back even if it will be the last thing he does, determined to right his wrongs.

The Last Stand[]

At the beginning, Kenji tries to rejoin the other campers, but they (except for Sammy) are still mad at him for turning his back on them, which he agrees that they have every right to be, as he holds a lot of shame over his actions. Ben intervenes that Kenji did betray them, but has realized that what he did was wrong after realizing his father's true nature and that he helped save Bumpy, and that, according to Ben, is enough to earn a second chance as they need all the help they can get to fight back. Darius, however, excludes himself from the discussion while Brooklynn, Yasmina and Sammy still want an explanation. Kenji admits that he is so sorry and that he really hoped that his dad was a good guy, but it turned out that he was wrong. He then tries to explain to Brooklynn, who is still disappointed, by telling her that he is still the same guy as before and that he will prove it to her no matter how long it takes. Kenji is glad that Yasmina and Sammy have become a couple, but when sees how Darius still avoids him he becomes sad again. Darius was the one in the group that took Kenji's betrayal the hardest as he thought Kenji was his best friend and would always have his back. Kenji says that it is okay if Darius isn't ready to forgive him before Darius shuts the door to the forest biome, telling Kenji that it will be war if his dad comes in. Kenji agrees as he knows his father won't give up until he has the new password for his computer.

When Daniel, along his thugs and mind-controlled predatory dinosaurs, manages to break into the biome, Kenji flees with his friends, ignoring his father's calling after his proof that he no longer cares for him.

Kenji looks heartbroken as Daniel mentions that everything he has worked so hard for, his company and reputation is on the line and doesn't mention he has worked hard for his own family, which makes Kenji realize how little he means to Daniel.

When Kenji accidentally destroys the tablet, Darius is furious and pushes Kenji away while screaming "Why did you ever come back?!" which makes Kenji even more miserable. When Darius then blames Kenji for bailing the dinosaurs and then just makes it worse, Kenji says that Darius is not furious at him because of the tablet or the dinosaurs, but because of Kenji not being there to support Darius when he needed him the most, which Kenji admits that he should have been. Darius agrees that Kenji wasn't there for him, still angry, and Kenji does not deny that he turned his back on his best friend in the greatest time of need and tries to explain, but gets distracted when he sees Toro being mistreated by the remaining twin, who can't get the Carnotaurus to fight back against the raptors who attack him. Without care for his own safety, Kenji runs over to help Toro. When Darius sees this he finally starts to realize that Kenji actually understood his mistakes, and how much he cares for the dinosaurs and manages to help him free Toro from his mind control, of which Toro kills the remaining twin while Darius and Kenji escape.

After they stop, Kenji continues explaining that he knows that he can't change the past, but promises that he will never abandon those who truly mean most to him as neither the dinosaurs and particularly not Darius. Darius finally forgives Kenji, thanking him and they hug each other. While they hug Kenji mentions that he missed it as he never had that kind of love or caring with his father as with his friends.

The Nublar Six[]

Before Hawkes manages to finish off Darius, Big Eatie, who survived the earlier clash attacks, causes Hawkes to drop the controller, stomps on it and destroys it which sets the Spinosaurus free. As Big Eatie attacks the Spinosaurus, Kenji rushes to Darius's side and takes his friend to safety. Hawkes realizes he has lost control over the big predator and tries to crawl away, but Little Eatie sneaks up behind him and devours Hawkes, making him pay for his earlier crimes. Having lost the last of his henchmen, Daniel hurries to take cover while the two T-rexes battle and chase away the Spinosaurus.

Right after, the alarm is set off and the system of the island is being overloaded thanks to the creation of the new control chips as they draw too much power. With the system overloaded, the island will be self-destroyed and it can't be shut down. Daniel prepares to escape in an air plane. He tells Kenji to hurry before anyone finds out about his actions which will completely ruin his reputation. Kenji doesn't understand how Daniel can care more about his reputation while his friends are still on the island. Daniel says that Kenji always let his feelings control his opinions and that they have to protect their name. Kenji, finally having had enough of his father's heartless nature, states with the cry in his throat that Daniel only cares about his business and how he has never cared about other people or even about Kenji himself.

Kenji then asks Daniel if he ever looked for him after Jurassic World was destroyed and if he ever meant anything to Daniel. When Daniel won't answer and tells Kenji to get on the plane, Kenji is heartbroken as he understands that Daniel never searched for him and thereby has never truly cared for him. He turns away from Daniel completely as he, in the same moment, realizes that he will never be able to earn his father's love. When Kenji sees his friends arrive to the docks, he smiles, knowing that it's them who truly always have been and always will be there for him and states to his father that the Camp Family are his true family and he's gonna stay with them, and thereby holds his promise to Darius to never abandon him or the gang again for a father who only uses him for his own gains. After Daniel escapes it is revealed that the overloading of the island's system was a fake in order to make Daniel leave.

Having put an end to his father's plans, Kenji destroys the controller controlling Toro, setting the dinosaur free at last. He then meets up with his friends at the watering hole and gives Brooklynn a flower, the same kind of flower that he planned to give her on their earlier date that was ruined by Daniel. Their relationship seems to start being renewed when they realize someone is arriving at the Island. The campers take cover on a cliff above the port seeing a boat arrive, nervous that it is Daniel who may return with backup. They are then shocked and relieved to see that it is really their former camp leaders Dave and Roxie who arrives with Dr. Mae Turner and Darius's older brother Brandon. During the happy reunion, Kenji himself is being hugged by Dave.

As they leave the island, Kenji sits alone at the boat's stern, looking at the Island as they leave it behind, when Brooklynn keeps him company and tells Kenji that Mae has contacted the authorities and that his dad has been arrested for his crimes, leaving Kenji with no parent since his mom is dead. Brooklynn says that she is sorry for Kenji's sake and puts her hand on his arm which Kenji appreciates and makes him happier. Yet Kenji still doesn't think his dad will tell anyone about Mantah Corp Island as his family only cares about their good reputation, and telling anyone about the island would only destroy it further than it already has been. Brooklynn declares that not all Kons care about their reputation, meaning that Kenji isn't like his father. They kiss and renew their relationship.

Back at the mainland, Kenji at first seems happy over having been rescued, but when he sees his friends happily reunited with their parents, Kenji looks sad as he himself has no family to be with until Darius persuades his mother to adopt Kenji and she welcomes him to the family by hugging him, followed by Darius and Brandon, making Kenji happy to finally be part of a family that truly cares about him. Kenji later inherits his father's fortune and becomes the new president of Mantah Corp, but unlike his father, he it uses to do good by turning Mantah Corp Island into a secret dinosaur sanctuary instead of a battlefield. He still lives with his new family, the Bowmans, and still dates Brooklynn. He is also still in touch with the other campers along with Darius and has changed his hairstyle from sharp and straight to flat.

Personality[]

Initially, Kenji was the most arrogant and obnoxious of the campers, frequently making fun of Darius and Ben. He often bragged about his wealth. However, he was shown to be deeply insecure over his relationship with his father and thus sought the friendships of the other campers. As time went on, he came to care deeply about the other campers, serving as a big brother figure to all of them and gaining a crush on Brooklynn. Besides this, Kenji is far from the smartest member in the group and has an ability to unintentionally put the others in danger. He was even shown willing to give Wu his laptop in order to save Brooklynn, even if it meant Wu making more hybrid dinosaurs and countless people possibly getting killed.

However, in the final season, Kenji pulls away from his friends after being manipulated by his father Daniel Kon to think Daniel is not evil by using his position of being Kenji's father and even uses Kenji's dream of being a bigger part of his father's life. He helps imprison the other campers, controls Toro with no remorse and is willing to help sell the chips to Biosyn. However, at Isla Nublar, Kenji realizes bit by bit that siding with his father was a mistake as his father hires the ruthless mercenary Hawkes and starts to realize, with the help of Mae Turner, that his father only shows love for him when he manages to make money for him, which is proof that his father only has conditional love for him.

The turning point occurs after his father brainwashes his dinosaur friend, Bumpy the Ankylosaurus, against her will, despite promising Kenji not to. Kenji realizes his father truly is a villain as his friends tried to tell him earlier, and decides to redeem himself and helps Mae escape. Being deeply ashamed and remorseful. he helps Ben save Bumpy and apologized to the other campers for his actions, admitting that he should have listened to them and that he is so sorry for not supporting them earlier. The others accept Kenji again as he admits that they were right about his father, all except Darius who took Kenji's betrayal the hardest as he thought Kenji was his best friend and would always have his back and Kenji bailed that trust. Eventually, Kenji decides to stay with his friends rather than abandon them with his father after realizing his father never truly cared for him, that Daniel just had pretended to be a good father since their reunion just to be sure that Kenji stayed on his side and that his friends are his true family. Kenji is eventually adopted into Darius’ family after Daniel is arrested by the police.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first antagonist in the series to have been a hero at first. He's also the first antagonist to be redeemed, followed by his own father and then Henry Wu.
  • He's one of the three human villains to not be killed off, alongside his Wu and Soyona Santos.
  • While a hero for the first four seasons, he briefly falls into a villainous role throughout season 5 when he, after being manipulated into thinking his father isn't evil, helps his father imprison the other campers, brainwashes Toro with no hesitation and is willing to capture and brainwash other dinosaurs to sell to Lewis Dodgson and Biosyn thinking his dad just tries to save them as he in the mean time was so happy to finally be a part of his fathers life. However, after Mae points out his father only shows him love if he helps the latter gain money and his father brainwashes his dinosaurfriend Bumpy despite Kenji pleading with him not to, Kenji eventually realizes he was wrong as his father has no respect for his own son's wishes and truly is evil like his friends suspected and redeems himself by helping his friends stop him which he realized he should have done already from the beginning.
    • However it is implied he mostly joined his reasonings for joining his father was out of a selfish desire to be part of his life, thinking his dad finally wanted to have a real relationship with him and also Kenji is a idiot due his slow ability to realize he puts everyone in danger.
    • Most fans believes Kenji doesn't deserve redemption and also deserved to die for his countless actions causing many problems for the campers.
  • He is the first character in the Jurassic Park franchise to become arch-nemesis with his own father.
  • Since only the first four seasons of Camp Cretaceous have been adapted into young adult novelizations, Kenji becomes an antagonist only in the movie canon.
  • He can be considered to be the main anti-hero due to his actions resulting in the campers getting endangered and later betraying them.
