"Spice Girls set to conquer the Globe"! Why is it that I can't pick up a paper without seeing *them* all over the front page?!
~ McMaxford shows his contempt for the Spice Girls.

Kevin McMaxford is the main antagonist of the 1997 British-American film Spice World.

He was portrayed by the late Barry Humphries, who also portrayed and voiced the Great Goblin in The Hobbit trilogy.

Biography[]

Kevin McMaxford is the corrupt head of the National Event newspaper who is intensely weary of producing newspapers about the Spice Girls. To try and raise his ratings (and possibly become richer), he hires a mercenary photographer named Damien to stalk the Girls and catch them at their worst. At first, it starts out small with a backhanded (though rhetorical) question from Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell about whether the Pope is truly Catholic. These slanderous articles make the Girls' manager, Clifford, more and more irate, with one about a boating accident involving two contest winners sending him over the edge and causing the Girls to storm out. While he is reporting this to his boss, the Chief, Damien, in turn, reports his troubles to McMaxford's right-hand man, Brad. Upon hearing that the Albert Hall concert may not go as planned, McMaxford suddenly gets a smile on his face, certain that he has succeeded. Unfortunately, his downfall ultimately comes when he is fired after Damien (whom the Girls have made seen the folly of his ways) catches him in a Jacuzzi scandal.

Trivia[]

  • Though he does not have very much screen time in the entire movie (five scenes, including the newspaper article showing his defeat), his actions alone after hiring Damien is enough to signify his villainous role.
