Although he's not necessarily evil, he was a scientist searching for E.T. to look at his face. When doctors, scientists, and the government ruined at the family's home and changed it into a hospital environment to take care of E.T. and Elliot, Keys finally gets a closer look at E.T.  Elliott wants E.T. back, but Keys wants E.T. so that he can study his life form.

At some point he became a government agent dedicated to discovering and capturing a real extraterrestrial, however he has no evil intentions and simply want to fulfill his childhood dream of seeing a real alien up close.

While E.T. is separated from his ship and fellow aliens in the forest, Keys and his men arrive in trucks and eventually discover E.T. who attempts to flee from him. While E.T. manages to not be captured, he is left behind as his fellow aliens flee from Earth to avoid being captured themselves. Keys and his men then go on the hunt for E.T. in the following days throughout the forest. He is seen once by Elliot and Keys eventually discovers the candy Elliot is leaving for E.T..

Eventually, Keys and his men discover that Elliot has been hiding E.T. in his home and they seize his family's home and quarantine it. While E.T. and Elliot are under medical observation, Keys' face is finally seen and he observes E.T. with awe. Speaking with Elliot, Keys reveals that he is truly not a bad person and reveals that he has been wishing to see an alien since he was 10 years old and does not want E.T. to die. When Elliot says that E.T. must return to his home, Keys tells him that he believes that E.T. was not left behind intentionally but that his being on Earth is truly a miracle. Keys also tells Elliot that he is glad that E.T. came to him and that he did his best in protecting him.

Keys is the main antagonist of the 1982 science-fiction film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. While he himself is not a bad person he is considered the main antagonist due to the threat he initially poses to the alien E.T.. His real name is never spoken in the film.

He is portrayed by Peter Coyote.
