Finally - A beefy opponent!
~ Serious Sam upon meeting The Beast.

The Khnums are recurring antagonists in the Serious Sam video game series.

Named after the Egyptian deity Khnum for their ram-like heads, the Khnums are a particularly resilient and dangerous species of mammals from the Lambda Arietis system. Their magical abilities, thick hides and brute strength makes them some of the most powerful creatures in Mental's Horde.

They are usually introduced as bosses before becoming uncommon enemies in subsequent levels. A Khnum known as The Beast serves as the main antagonist of the Legend of the Beast DLC for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter.

Appearance[]

The Khnums are bulky, hooved bipeds twice the size of a regular human. Their bodies boast a highly muscular stature, horned heads and extremely resilient, thick skin that makes conventional weaponry ineffective against them. Explosive rounds, missiles and charges are practically required to deal any significant blows.

The Beast looks identical to the other members of its species, but wears the Sign of Amon-Ra as a necklace.

Biography[]

According to their NETRICSA file, the Khnums were the apex among the intelligent species on their home planet in Lambda Arietis. Their strength, ferocity and cruelty allowed them to crush the other sentient lifeforms into submission and forced them to worship the Khnums as gods. Though they are not divine, their regenerative abilities may make them seem immortal to anything not packing high-caliber weaponry. When they were confronted by alien overlord Mental they recognized his superior military power and willingly joined his horde, where their fearsome might granted them prestigious positions.

Serious Sam 4[]

During their quest to find the Holy Grail to use as weapon against Mental, Sam and his teammates from the Alien Artifact Acquisition were tasked by General Brand to set up beacons around the Pompeji with to forcibly erupt Mount Vesuvius, clearing the airspace above Rome of Octanian Raiders and a Harvester Leviathan. While Sam, Kenny and Rodriguez placed their beacons without too much trouble, their comrade Jones found himself captured by a Khnum. Sam came to his aid, but as soon as the Khnum saw Sam it bit off Jones's torso and swallowed the beacon he carried. Enraged, Sam avenged his friend's murder by defeating the Khnum and slowly cut the beacon out of it with a knife while it was still breathing, then rammed the beacon into its skull to kill it.

The Khnums then become recurring elite enemies, though a second noteworthy Khnum is seen in the last level of the game "From Earth With Love". Sam found himself having to travel to Mental's superportal in Tunguska, Russia on his own. He arrived at a nearby outpost just in time to save a fellow Earth Defense Force member named Dimitry from a Khnum, ripping its head off by driving into it from a heightened position with a snowmobile. Sam fought several more Khnums on his way to the Tunguska Offensive, where the EDF was fighting against a massive army of Octanians, Bio-Mechanoids and Khnums.

Serious Sam 3: BFE[]

The first Khnum is encountered near the beginning of the first level "Summer in Cairo". After Sam Stone got separated from his team on a mission to rescue a Professor Stein, who perhaps discovered the means to activate the Time-Lock, humanity's last hope for survival in the fight against Mental and his minions, he came across a cement barrier blocking the road ahead. A Khnum walked by the barrier and looked dismissively at Sam as it passed by, seemingly not deeming him worthy of its attention.

Sam later gets into a proper fight with a Khnum in the "Unearthing the Sun" level. After successfully activating the first of two generators needed to power the Time-Lock, Sam found that the way outside the temple was destroyed and had to find another way through an area with lots of pillars. The Khnum then announced its arrival by destroying one of said pillars and attacked Sam immediately afterwards, however the pillars provided ample cover for him and explosives scattered around the arena ensured he had the means to take the behemoth down. The Khnums then become recurring elite enemies for the rest of the game, faced relatively sparsely until the final level.

Legend of the Beast[]

Although the DLC is for Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, it takes place at the halfway point of Serious Sam: The First Encounter.

After Sam used the Time-Lock to travel into the distant past and give humanity a fighting chance against Mental, he needed to find a way off Earth to get to Mental. He tried to make use of a spaceship left behind by the ancient Sirians, an extinct human-like species that arrived on Earth and influenced many of its cultures, their technology having enables humanity to colonize and eventually awaken Mental in the first place. However, to gain access to the spaceship Sam required the "Sign of Amon-Ra", an artifact that acts as a key of sorts.

Unfortunately the artifact was stolen by a cult known as the Children of Amon-Ra, who threw the artifact into a pit inside a large temple as an offering to the wrathful god living within it, actually a Khnum that once terrorized the city until the priests started to offer animal and human sacrifices to appease it. This inspired the deity its species later received its name from. The Beast wore the Sign of Amon-Ra as a necklace around its neck and was none too pleased when Sam appeared in the blood-soaked sacrificial pit to take it away. None of Sam's weapons at that time were strong enough to deal any significant damage to The Beast.

Luckily, a conveniently placed trap allowed Sam to vanquish The Beast and take the artifact from it, then continued with his journey to Karnak.

Trivia[]

  • The Khnums bear a remarkable similarity to the Barons of Hell from the Doom franchise. This is because they were originally supposed to be Barons of Hell when Croteam tried to make a new Doom game. When they unfortunately didn't get the job due to communication issues their Barons of Hell models were reused as the Khnum enemies for what would become Serious Sam 3: BFE.
