Samurai, you are a warrior. I can see that. You trained your whole life for this. And you have won battles that lesser men have called unwinnable, yes? But while you were sharpening your sword, do you know how I prepared for Today? I learned. I know your language... your traditions... your beliefs... which villages to tame and... which to burn. So I ask you once again, samurai, do you surrender?
~ Khotun Khan to Lord Shimura
All this death. Because you... and your uncle would not surrender. I offered you peace. And you... chose war. Now... the people of your mainland... will suffer.
~ Khotun Khan in his final battle with Jin Sakai.

Khotun Khan is the main antagonist of the 2020 video game Ghost of Tsushima. He is the cunning and ruthless General of the Mongol Empire, who leads and commands a massive fleet of ships and soldiers in the first invasion of Japan's Tsushima Island. He is also the cousin of Kublai Khan and the grandson of Genghis Khan. To achieve total victory, Khotun relies on his knowledge of the Samurai way to ultimately destroy them.

He was voiced by Patrick Gallagher, who also provided the motion capture for him.

Personality

Khotun Khan is a barbaric warlord who is infamously known and feared by many for his ruthless and brutal nature. He has the mindset of a merciless conqueror who will resort to any tactics as means of gaining control of power. These often include the acts of burning down villagers and their homes or subjecting them to enslavement and torture. These acts alone show that Khan will not hesitate to put innocent lives in danger and it is through these acts alone that inspire his men to carry out his deeds across Tsushima Island.

Unlike the samurai who fight with honor, Khan rarely ever shows signs of honor and often relies on brutal and cheap tactics to win his duels. In spite of his barbaric approaches, Khan is known for being very cunning and strategic, as he takes the time to study his opponents and learn more about their history and culture, giving him the opportunity to set up traps to ambush them and use their ideals against them. This is most notably shown from his encounters with Jin Sakai, as he learns about his opponent's usage of poison and finds ways to develop them into weapons that can be used against his enemies.

Despite his reputation, Khan does show signs of mercy and genuine kindness to his enemies on certain occasions, as he offered Jin Sakai and his uncle, Lord Shimura to surrender peacefully. However, this is often done so that they may fight under his rule, otherwise, he will continue to carry on his cruel acts on Tsushima Island. He also acknowledges his opponents to be strong and capable when they're capable of proving themselves. He also tends to be calm and collected, even in battle, which shows that he appears to be fully confident in his skill as a warrior, though there are times where he will lose his composure and act out of wrath if driven back enough, as shown in his first encounter with Jin Sakai.

Inspiration

Khotun Khan appears to be based on Kublai Khan, who was the Great Khan of the Mongol Empire during this time. Although he was technically the fifth Khagan of the Mongol Empire, Kublai's reign is known for his founding of the Yuan dynasty in China after conquering it and ruled until his death in 1294. He was able to expand the borders of the empire from the Pacific Ocean all the way west to the Black Sea.

Trivia

  • While it is possible to bring Khotun Khan's health down to zero in the first encounter with him on the bridge, it is impossible to actually beat him as the fight is purposely designed for the player to lose against him, due to story purposes.
  • Coincidentally, Patrick Gallagher, the actor that portrayed Khotun Khan, also portrayed a Hunnic character based on a real-life figure, Attila the Hun, in the Night at the Museum film series.
