Villain Overview

I need to become... I need to become... a lot stronger. Stronger. Stronger! Stronger and Stronger and Stronger! Just you wait, (Player’s name)...
~ Kieran at the end of The Teal Mask.
Kept me waiting. I worked hard for a chance to show you what I can really do (Player’s name). I put everything into studying and making my Pokémon stronger… I crushed the Elite Four and became Champion… All of that hard work… All of it… All of it was just so that I could beat you-right here, right now!
~ Kieran to the player, before engaging in a Championship rematch with them.

Kieran is the main antagonist of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC. serving as the tritagonist of Part 1: The Teal Mask, the main antagonist of Part 2: The Indigo Disk and the deuteragonist of the Epilogue: Mochi Mayhem.

He is a young boy who lives in the land of Kitakami and studies in Unova's Blueberry Academy along with his big sister, Carmine.

He starts as a close friend of the player until his increasing jealousy and inability to bond with Ogerpon, as well as the player character, at Carmine's request, betraying his trust and lying to Kieran. This causes him to that the reason why the player lied to him was because he was weak. Wanting to be like the player character, looking up to them and wanting to be their friend, he believes that if he can just beat them in a battle, they'll respect and befriend him. This belief causes him in turn causes him to develop an overly aggressive rivalry and deep-rooted obsession with defeating the player, causing him to skip meals and sleeping only to train, believing that due to his experiences in life of being taken advantage of or hurt by people. This routine causes him to be constantly on edge and often lash out at everyone around him. He decides to catch Terapagos to prove that he is strong enough to be worthy of the player's respect and friendship. While some of Kieran's actions are reprehensible, the way he ends up is not his fault. Constantly yelled at by his big sister whenever he tried to express himself, implied to have been bullied relentlessly by others around him prior to Teal Mask, and with Drayton's harsh treatment of him in Indigo Disk only furthering his insecurities. As well as this, Kieran is heavily emotionally vulnerable.

Appearance[]

He is a short young boy with yellow eyes and black hair with violet underlights. In The Teal Mask DLC, he wears a yellow headband, collared blue shirt with a red tie, white and blue jacket a yellow backpack, a red glove, white shorts, one white and one blue, matching blue socks and red and white shoes. He is usually seen with his eyes being half-closed and mole on his neck. He appears to be at least 13 years old.

In the Indigo Disk DLC, he has his hair tied up by his yellow headband, mostly showing its violet underlights, with only a hair lock that hangs down. His jacket is now unzipped, showing he wears a sleeveless red and blue shirt with the BBL's white symbol on it and he now wears his yellow backpack around his waist instead.

Personality[]

Initially, he appears to be shy, timid, yet sweet boy, often seen behind his elder sister, Carmine. However, as the story progresses, he becomes more rebellious and distant after learning that Carmine and his grandfather has been keeping secrets about the truth of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three, as well as the Player lying to him about it. He becomes more obsessive in capturing and befriending Ogerpon that he eventually snaps when Ogerpon wanted to be with the Player Trainer.

At the end of The Teal Mask story, he vows to beat the Player Trainer with a sinister smile. In the start The Indigo Disk story, Kieran has a huge change in his personality, being more serious, constantly annoyed and in special, determined, as Carmine says that he's training nonstop day and night just so he can become stronger and finally best the player, going as far as skipping sleep, causing black circles to appear around his eyes, showing Kieran's neglect for himself due to him lacking self-confidence or self-worth. His skin has also paled, implying that it is having an impact on his health and growth. However, some parts of his old self slip through the cracks, though he tries his hardest to suppress them.

At the end of The Indigo Disk, Kieran has realised that he has been neglecting his needs and himself, and has been snapping out at people due to the physical decline that comes with neglecting himself and lacking self-worth. He decides to take a break to go back to Kitakami to mentally recover. He is still on break by the start of Mochi Mayhem, when he invites the player and his friends to Kitakami warmly. In Mochi Mayhem, he is noticeably more comfortable in his own skin, however, some insecurities remain, but he successfully avoids letting them consume him again. He is also more outgoing than he was in Teal Mask, but is still a bit shy. His black rings are gone, and his skin is less pale.

After Mochi Mayhem, he decides to go back to the school. In the school, he is still slightly lacking in self-worth, as seen in his over-apologising to Crispin, but he is recovering, and is pursuing getting stronger in a much more controlled way.

Biography[]

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet[]

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 1: The Teal Mask[]

Kieran is a student of Blueberry Academy native to Kitakami. He and Carmine are chosen to accompany the incoming students from Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV on a cultural tour of the area. Kieran is paired up with the player character, and accompanies them around Kitakami as they search for three signposts that tell the story of how the Loyal Three laid down their lives to protect the land from the evil Ogerpon. During this time, Kieran admits that he actually admires Ogerpon for her strength and independence.

At the end of the first day in Kitakami, the player, Carmine, and Kieran attend the Festival of Masks. The player and Carmine have a chance encounter with Ogerpon, who flees and drops her Teal Mask. Carmine decides to keep this incident from Kieran, fearing that the knowledge he missed a chance to meet his idol would break his heart. The next day, the player and Carmine learn from the siblings' grandfather that the "Loyal" Three were actually a group of bandits who attacked Ogerpon's Trainer and stole three masks made for her by the siblings' distant ancestor; Ogerpon slew the Lousy Three, but the villagers believed she was attacking them and came to fear her. Unbeknownst to them, Kieran overhears their conversation and concludes that they are excluding him out of contempt. While the player and Carmine search for materials to repair the Teal Mask, Kieran steals the mask, accuses them of treating him like an outcast, and demands the player defeat him in a battle to reclaim the mask.

After the player defeats Kieran, he surrenders the mask as agreed showing his honarable side. However, the Loyal Three unexpectedly come back to life and are given food and Ogerpon's stolen masks by the ignorant villagers. While the player, Carmine, and Ogerpon pursue and defeat the Loyal Three, Kieran convinces the villagers that the old legend was a fraud and that Ogerpon was innocent all along. With Ogerpon's reputation rehabilitated, the group returns to Ogerpon's mountain home, where Ogerpon chooses the player to be her Trainer. However, a jealous Kieran demands a final battle with the player for the right to take Ogerpon, irrespective of Ogerpon's wishes. The player defeats Kieran, who watches them catch Ogerpon before fleeing home, locking himself in his room, and refusing to come out or see the player off.

After the end of the tour, Kieran and Carmine are to return early to Blueberry due to an unexpected development in the Great Crater of Paldea. Kieran, now consumed by his resentment towards the player and obsession with strength, vows to become even stronger and ominously declares, "Just you wait" to the player while tying up his hair.

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 2: The Indigo Disk[]

Upon returning to Blueberry Academy, Kieran became fixated on Pokémon battling, going so far as to rise in the ranks of the school's unofficial League to become Champion. However, Carmine and the BB League's Elite Four, Drayton, Lacey, Crispin, and Amarys became concerned when he began using his new authority to bully other students out of the club and put overly strict high standards on the club. The club members also noted Kieran's declining health due to him skipping sleep and meals in favor of training all day long.

Despite Lacey's insistence to keep this as a 'League matter' and have Drayton deal with Kieran himself, Carmine secretly lobbied to have the player brought over to the school under the auspices of wanting to show off her home turf to get them to snap some sense into her brother. Upon discovering the player's arrival at the school, Kieran, against Lacey and Amarys' objections, had the player entered into the BB League at a high stage so he can prove that he is superior to them. After the player defeated the Elite Four, Kieran faces them off in a championship match. However, despite the amount of training he's done, and the strength of his new Pokémon team, the player's skill as an official League Champion proved too much for Kieran to overcome and was defeated, this time in front of a large audience. This caused most of the club to abandon him, as he fell to his knees in defeat and humiliation in what seemed to be a mental breakdown.

Now humiliated in front of the school, and with the title of BB Champion removed from him, Kieran scrambled to come up with a way to get back at the player, when he, Carmine, the Player, and Drayton were called to Briar's office. Briar informed the four that she recently had gotten permission from Geeta to lead an expedition to Area Zero in search for a mysterious Pokémon called Terapagos, believed to be the hidden treasure of Area Zero spoken of in legends from over 2,000 years ago.

Kieran saw this as the perfect opportunity and signed up, reasoning that catching and utilizing a Pokémon even the player doesn't know about would give him the edge needed to defeat them. Kieran begrudgingly helped the player travel to Area Zero's lowest depths, though occasionally letting loose some of his older self whenever he was impressed by Area Zero.

Once the group made it to the deepest cavern they found a crystal object that Kieran deduced was Terapagos' hibernating form. He desperately attempted to awaken the crystal with Briar's encouragement. Carmine tried to warn Kieran to be careful but Kieran instead started ranting how he was furious that the player always does everything right and succeeds at everything Kieran constantly fails at, be it battling, Ogerpon, or even getting along with Carmine. Terapagos suddenly awakened from his 2 millennial old slumber as a small infant turtle.

Terapagos showed more interest in the player than Kieran, and attempted to walk over to them. Kieran, refusing to let the player get another legendary he desired, used the Master Ball he received during his time as BB League Champion. Kieran demanded a battle with the player using Terapagos, Briar was also eager to see Terapagos in action. Contrary to what the books and legends foretold however, Terapagos did not show any extraordinary powers nor seemed particularly strong and was defeated quickly. This infuriated Kieran and made him think perhaps it wasn't the treasure of Area Zero, Briar instead theorized that maybe they should Terastalize Terapagos to unleash its true power since it is the source of all Tera Energy.

Kieran proceeded to Terastalize, causing it to take a form that more closely described the divine forms depicted in the legends. This proves ruinous, however, as Terapagos, being still an infant unable to fully grasp its power, went into a berserk rampage that threatened to cause a massive cave-in and would put Paldea in grave danger if it left Area Zero in that state.

Kieran attempted to return Terapagos to the Master Ball, but Terapagos' power was too much to contain and destroyed the Master Ball. Kieran collapsed and went into a nervous breakdown again, a mass energy blast from Terapagos nearly struck him but the player sent out Koraidon/Miraidon to protect him.

The player and Carmine were forced to battle Terapagos in an attempt to calm it down, but they were badly outmatched with Terapagos absorbing away any Terastal energy used by the player to Terastallize their Pokémon and Carmine was quickly defeated. Kieran watched the situation get worse in desperation and blamed himself for causing this disaster. Carmine's repeated urging made Kieran snap out of it and team up with the player, their efforts allowed them to break through Terapagos' defenses and weaken it enough to catch it again, but Kieran decided the player had to be the one to do it.

With another major crisis prevented, Briar apologized for her reckless actions, as Kieran and Carmine broke down crying as they leave the cave.

After returning to the Academy, Kieran resigned from the BB League and requested that he and the player start over as friends. The player presumably agreed, and they returned to Blueberry Academy. Kieran also decides to take a small break from Blueberry Academy and go back to Kitakami along with Carmine.

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero's epilogue: Mochi Mayhem[]

Kieran sent a letter to the Player about how he and his sister are back in Mossui Town in Kitakami for a while, and invited them and their three friends to visit. He was first seen at his house in Mossui, where he meets Arven, Penny, Nemona. After meeting the gang, Nemona challenged Kieran to a Pokémon battle, which he agreed to. He then lost off-screen, and was feeling upset by it. But the rest of gang cheered him up, and he felt better. But then, Carmine showed up, and started flapping her arms and said “mochi, mochi”. So, Kieran, the player, and the others took her back to the house.

Kieran said she started acting like that yesterday, stating how it might have been a curse. But the others shrugged it off and went back to the care center. Arven was looking at the tv and said he wanted to change the channel, but Kieran said the Caretaker hid the remote, so the rest of the gang looked around for it. After the player found it in the bush, Nemona was gone, so Kieran and the player looked around for her.

While outside, they noticed two residents outside, and decided to talk to them. But the residents started flapping their arms and yelling “mochi, mochi”, as a purple mist surrounded them. Kieran and the Player were forced into a double battle, and won. After winning, the player noticed Nemona, and went to Kitakami Hall. When they got there, they encountered Kieran’s grandma and Grandpa. While there, Kieran’s grandma gave his grandpa some mochi, and he became mind controlled. They both began flapping their arms and yelling “mochi, mochi” and challenged Kieran and the Player to a doubles battle. After they won, the player got a call from Arven, and went back to Mossui.

After arriving back in Mossui, Arven and Penny were okay, with Penny remarking about how she saw a weird Pokémon. Suddenly, the pink decoration from the beginning of the game returns, and was revealed to be a Pokémon named Pecharunt. Pecharunt shot out mochi, and it landed in Arven and Penny’s mouths, but the player dodged it, and it hit Kieran in the head. After eating the mochi, Arven and Penny became brainwashed, flapping their arms and saying “mochi, mochi!”. Pecharunt used Arven and Penny as shields, and the player and Kieran were forced to fight them. After they won, Kieran noticed Pecharunt attempting to flee and chased it to the Loyalty Plaza.

After the Player got there, they found Nemona, who was also brainwashed, flapping her arms around, and saying “mochi, mochi”. She then challenged the player to a Pokémon battle. Also, the whole town of Mossui showed up, all still hypnotized. While Kieran held off the town, the player defeated Nemona, and caught Pecharunt. After catching Pecharunt, the townsfolk went back to normal, including Carmine, Arven, Penny, and Nemona.

With the Pecharunt incident dealt with, the player, Nemona, Penny, and Arven all spent the rest of their mini-vacation at Kitakami with Carmine and Kieran, during which Nemona battled the siblings at least a dozen times each. Before leaving, the Paldean students bid farewell to Carmine and Kieran, who were planning on returning to Blueberry Academy.

Trivia[]

  • Kieran is implied to might be responsible for the Loyal Three's resurrection, as a purple mist is briefly seen in his fist when he punched the trio's shrine and grave.
    • This leads to the speculation that Kieran could've been poisoned or corrupted by Pecharunt when Kieran is confronted at Kitakami's Peachy's stand about the lie Carmine and the player told him. This is later hinted by his sudden change in attitude and hostility towards the player and Carmine after he stole Ogerpon's Teal Mask.
    • In the Mochi Mayhem epilogue, when Pecharunt resurfaces and starts brainwashing the residents of Moussi town, Kieran and the player would be the only people present not to be infected by it. However, the same purple mist is present on everyone infected by Pecharunt, thus implying that it did have an influence in Kieran's attitude even if indirectly.
  • If the player sends out Ogerpon during the Champion battle with Kieran, he'll get shocked at the player, assuming that the player is rubbing salt into the wounds with what happened on Kitakami, and gives an expression that appears to have him get more anxious, before yelling at the player for 'bringing out the ogre now of all times', which can be understood as him becoming insecure seeing the ogre, being reminded of his old self on Kitakami that he despises.
  • Kieran is heavily autistically coded, and many of his misunderstandings of people and their misunderstandings of him can be easily understood from this point of view. His status as a villain is debatable since he only had good intentions, and his only negative actions arose as a result of being lied to by the player, and the way his sister treats him.
  • Kieran is one of the few antagonists who does succeed in catching the given Legendary Pokémon of interest of the story where he's a major villain, alongside N, though Terapagos escapes shortly after.
  • In the French version of the game, Kieran is 14 years old.
  • Due to the fact that Hydrapple is registered in the Blueberry Pokédex despite its previous form Dipplin only being found in Kitakami, it's implied that Kieran's Hydrapple was the first one discovered, accidentally evolved when he taught it Dragon Cheer using a TM thanks to Dipplin being unable to learn it naturally.
    • Furthermore, the Dragon Cheer TM is only found in the Blueberry Academy, being given out by Drayton. This narrows the place of Hydrapple's origin down to the school, with Kieran being the only student known to have a Dipplin.
  • Kieran is the first villainous rival to not have a influence related by an Evil Organization. Instead he's influenced by the Loyal Three which is a group of Pokémon.
    • He is also the first villainous rival that is not to be related to any of the villainous team leaders.
