The story of Killer Croc from DC Comics.
Biography[]
Pre/Post-Crisis[]
In the original comics, Waylon Jones was simply a man with a disfiguring mutation who eventually turned to crime rather than live his whole life as a circus sideshow attraction.
Eventually, he came up against Batman, who enlisted the aid of the trapeze family, The Flying Todds. Sadly, Croc murdered all of them except for son Jason Todd, who joined Batman in bringing Croc down.
This directly led to Jason becoming the second Robin, now that Dick Grayson had taken on the identity of Nightwing. Later on, in an effort to differentiate Jason's origin from Grayson's, this story was discarded, and following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Croc no longer played a role in Jason's origin as Robin.
Later stories, owing to a mix of natural threat escalation for a minor foe as well as confusion about Croc's condition, made him more and more reptilian in mind and body. An encounter with the potions of Posion Ivy during Batman's initial confrontation with Hush left him in an almost kaiju-like state.
The Beast Beneath[]
Killer Croc, who has mutated lizard monster and as a result, he is becoming more feral and worse, he takes up eating every living creature he finds, to fill his stomach as a beast more than a man.
Croc remembers that it all started when Hush and Riddler injected the mutagenic virus on him and he became a monster. After he was captured by the Government, they found a cure for him and reverted the mutation. Once again, he was "normal" until he was captured by Black Mask and he had Mad Hatter implant a chip on Croc's brain, which caused him to mutate once again. Black Mask used Croc as a puppet and sent him to attack the Hill, a place protected by Onyx and Catwoman. After this, Croc tried to get revenge on Mad Hatter, but Batman prevented it and told Croc that the mutation was out of control.
Croc decides to look for the doctor who cured him previously and he goes straight to Wayne Tech. However, on his way there, he is attacked by members of the False Face Society, but he slaughters them with no effort. Croc breaks into Wayne Tech and a security guard tries to shoot him, but Croc's skin has become thicker, and bullets don't harm him anymore. Croc asks the guard for Doctor Maria Belleza, and the guard takes him to her office. After getting her scent from her chair, Croc leaves the place, sparing the guard's life.
Croc found Maria Belleza, the doctor who cured him once from the Hush virus and reverted his mutation. Croc is mutating again and finds it harder to control himself as he used to do in the past. He almost strangles the doctor to get her to cure him, but she told him to let her go so she can work on his cure. As Maria injects Croc with a special serum on his tongue and Croc finds it really hard to keep control and not bite her hand off, but in the end, he manages to succeed.
Maria starts working on the cure, she asks Croc about his life and his illness. Croc tells her that he was born with that condition, killing his own mother at birth. After this, he was sent to Florida with an aunt that didn't care for him but for the money that the government gave her for taking him. Childhood was hard as every kid mocked Croc and feared him as they grew up. Croc became an outlaw and spent some time in prison and after going out he became an alligator fighter, but it didn't last long. He decided to move to Gotham and try to conquer the underworld, but his plans were thwarted time and again by Batman and all his allies. Croc recalls that the mutation was constantly happening to his body, but that he would never lose control over his actions, until Hush injected him with his virus and the mutation worsened, which is causing him troubles controlling his animal instincts.
After several hours of intense work, Maria finally manages to develop a cure to reverse the mutation caused by the Hush virus and injects the serum to Croc. A few minutes later Maria gives a mirror to Killer Croc's human-like body while shed tear of joy and Maria tells him that despite the appearances, he is still a man that deserves love and respect. They approach each other and the situation gets romantic for a moment until Croc starts mutating again and his body returns to the lizard-like form Croc to begs her to fix it again.
Maria gets back to work on a cure, hours pass, and she is not able to find the answer. Finally, she admits that she won't be able to find a cure as the virus mutates too quickly. Croc's basic instincts overcome his control and due to his hunger, he devours Maria and feels regretful at the same time.
Croc leaves the place less hungry and completely sorrowful. As he walks through the sewers, he is determined to make the people responsible for his condition, including Hush, Black Mask, Riddler and Batman, pay for all they've done to him.
New 52[]
In Prime Earth a kinder version of Croc. In same Waylon Jones was born with a rare condition that gave him scaly skin. He scrubbed daily to try and get the scales off to try and be normal. But he decided to give up because of the pain it gave him when he descaled himself. He grew up to become the Killer Croc and worked for the Gotham Circus. He was paid to wrestle crocodiles, but he's boss kept most of the money. Furious by his boss's foolish choice, Killer Croc bit his arm off.
After being apprehended by the GCPD, he listens to two police officers' joke about him. Saying he should stop while he's ahead and to get henchmen. Killer Croc took this to heart. He stopped being the muscle headed brute and become more of a thinker. He gathered "henchmen" who are really just homeless people that worship Croc for taking them in.
Croc now rules all of the sewers in Gotham with his own personal army.
DC Rebirth[]
In DC's 2016 relaunch of its books DC Rebirth, Killer Croc appears as one of the many villains attempting to kill Batman to stop Two-Face from leaking secret information. He attacks Batman on a train alongside Amygdala and King Shark. In the pages of Suicide Squad, Killer Croc and the Squad go on a mission to retrieve a "cosmic item" from a Russian undersea prison.
Waylon Jones and June Moone together.
Revealed to be a portal to the Phantom Zone and the Squad comes face-to-face with General Zod. He attacks the Squad and, when spotting Zod about to kill June Moone/Enchantress, Croc saves her just in time. After the mission, back in their cells June Moone and Croc have a heartfelt conversation and embrace each other. Croc and June Moone go on a date around New York City to develop their relationship, which Waller can later exploit in the future.
Croc sees June having issues regarding her freelance work and incentivizes her to apply for work which June breaks down in tears due to the fact that no one would trust a convict who can turn into a witch at a moment's notice. June then turns to Croc asking him who would trust her to which Croc reply "Me" and both of them embrace. While June goes to find freelance work, Croc is in a sewer wishing her that she would succeed, but later expresses fear and shed a tear that he will lose her if she is able to achieve her dream. Enchantress rampages in New York City due to rejections after rejections until it is revealed that it is an editor from a magazine company who rejected June. After being convinced by Croc to reevaluate her, he decided to give her some freelance work. Moved by Waylon's actions, June reigns in the Enchantress and thanks his love for helping her.
In "Shock and Awe," the government has received orders to transfer every prisoner to a new location. June Moone is abruptly separated from her lover right before Killer Croc goes into action to rescue her, although Katana advises him to keep moving. Shortly after, Rick Flag returns the Squad to Washington, D.C., to confront The Wall.
When Enchantress sees that her love is injured, she teleports the possessed individuals to an unknown location. She then expresses her eternal love for him. As the Wall approaches, he reveals a strategy to eliminate the Squad by using a dimensional portal from a stolen file. Enchantress is suddenly pulled down by large hands, which then transform back into June, who desperately pleads with Waylon to save her before she is fully dragged down to hell. Croc witnesses this in horror and instinctively lunges at the Wall in retaliation. Despite being shot multiple times, his determination remains unshaken as he continues to throw furious punches, inflicting severe injuries on the Wall. However, the Wall eventually gains the upper hand and shoots Croc with his cannon, significantly wounding him.
Killer Croc mourning June Moone's "death".
The Wall manages to escape the battle after downloading the file and releasing the possessed individuals. Croc sits in silence, fixated on the spot where June was taken. Harley approaches him to check if he’s okay, to which he simply responds, “No magic.” Two days later, back in Belle Reve, Killer Croc is in his cell, mourning and breaking down in tears over the loss of June Moone. Rick has informed Waller that June was the only one who never viewed him as a monster.
Gotham City Monsters[]
Killer Croc, now discharged from the Suicide Squad, is seen attempting to find a job in Monstertown. Tusk, the hotel receptionist, offers him free tickets to the opera, which Croc quickly declines. In his hotel room, he picks up an unknown picture frame (possibly of June Moone, revealing just how much he misses her, unaware that she is still alive and has recently escaped from Hell).
After facing failures in finding an honest job, Killer Croc's frustration mounts. Just then, Frankenstein enters the scene, accompanied by Orca and Lady Clay. Croc initially lunges at him, but he soon calms down, realizing that Frankenstein isn’t an enemy. They inform him about the fate of his friend, Tusk, who was also at the theater. Driven by a desire for vengeance, Croc agrees to join the team for one last muscle job to avenge Tusk’s death.
Killer Croc finally at peace.
As the battle against Melmoth and his twisted army intensifies, Killer Croc quietly observes from the depths of the swamp. While the team manages to rescue Melmoth's latest intended victims, Croc inadvertently grabs the cursed blade belonging to Melmoth, cutting his hand and becoming a brainwashed agent of the conjurer. In a conflicted moment, he stabs Frankenstein in the back. However, this act is later revealed to be part of a trick, allowing Killer Croc to play a crucial role in Melmoth's ultimate defeat, as he’s the first to strike against him in the final confrontation.
Killer Croc, now simply going by Waylon, has taken over Tusk's hotel in Monster Town. He is committed to providing second chances to any monster in need, creating a haven for those looking to turn their lives around.
Joker War[]
During the Joker War tie-in event, Croc's hotel is destroyed by the Joker’s gang. Fed up with the chaos, he decides to retreat underground, establishing a new base in the sewers of Monster Town to keep away from the Joker’s antics. This move allows him to remain safe while continuing his mission to support fellow monsters in need.
In the sewers, Croc is not alone; a group of mutated individuals has joined him, recognizing him as their leader after he saved each of their lives from Joker's toxic waste. He shares his vision of bringing others down into the sewers for protection from the chaos above. When Batman tries to warn Croc about the dangers of the chemicals in the water, Croc dismisses his concerns and orders his team to kill Batman. However, he tells them to hold back as he waits for Batman to surface. In a tense moment, Batman proposes a deal: if he wins, he can take everyone with him, but if he loses, he will leave with the kidnapped individuals. Croc accepts the challenge, ready to fight for his people.
At Arkham Asylum, Batman is seen settling Croc and his gang into their new cells. He assures them that they will receive the best care possible, including efforts to reverse their conditions if a cure can be found. Before taking his leave, Batman sits down with Croc, expressing gratitude for honoring their deal. As they shake hands one last time, he addresses Croc by his real name, Waylon. Croc appreciates the gesture and thanks Batman for acknowledging him in such a personal way.
Red Hood[]
After the events of the Joker War, Croc is again compelled to return to a life of crime, taking up the role of muscle for hire once more. Thomas Misell, who had released him from Arkham, asks Croc to be his enforcer and to show the ropes. Croc accepts the offer, donning some new merchandise and a suit. As plans unfold to expose Strike's identity, Waylon finds himself in a car, engaging in a brief phone conversation before Red Hood approaches him, requesting a moment to talk.
Croc strikes up a conversation with Red Hood, expressing surprise at him working in the Hill and mentioning his expectation that Strike and her crew would follow. When Red Hood inquires about Croc's current line of work, Waylon responds nonchalantly, referring to himself as "the other decoy." During the trade deal, Waylon receives his payment for selling a stash of weapons from the back of his car before leaving the scene, ready to navigate this dangerous world once again.
Infinite Frontier[]
Batman: Killing Time[]
Croc attempts to build a relationship with Vera Angleton but fails when she rejects his advances, realizing his criminal lifestyle won't work. Embracing his identity, he enters the First National Bank of Gotham disguised as a security guard. He menaces a bank employee for money, breaking a window and grabbing the employee as alarms blare. In a fit of rage, Croc slams the security guard against the wall.
Batman arrives, finds the dead guard, and uses voice modulation to lure Croc out. Excited to confront the "big bad Bat," Croc engages in a fierce fight, but after a few exchanges, Batman delivers a powerful punch, knocking Croc down.
Leatherr Bound[]
Batman and Commissioner Gordon stood at the crime scene, their eyes fixed on the lifeless body of a komodo dragon sprawled across the ground. The air was thick with tension and the stench of decay. As they examined the grotesque sight, they exchanged silent glances, both aware of the larger implications of such a bizarre display of violence. Batman and Commissioner Gordon surveyed the crime scene, taking in the lifeless body of a komodo dragon. The air was heavy with tension. As they moved closer, they discovered the corpse of a crocodile nearby. Batman frowned, recognizing the implication. Gordon nodded, realizing the significance that Killer Croc is not but someone else.
Batman tracked down a suspect named Lars, who confessed that he had committed his crimes to attract Killer Croc's attention. Just as the revelation sank in, Killer Croc emerged from the shadows, furious and ready for revenge. Batman intervened, trying to help Lars, who had fallen into the murky depths of the Gotham River. However, Croc's reptilian allies swarmed the area, complicating the rescue.
Lars was pulled from the water, but not without severe injuries—he ended up in the hospital with only one limb intact. Meanwhile, Killer Croc was restrained and taken away to Arkham, his rage stilled, at least for the moment.
Superman Punch[]
Killer Croc lunged at Batwing, sinking his teeth into the left armor and slamming him against the wall with powerful force. Batwing quickly assessed the situation, suspecting that Croc might be working with the Riddler, but he knew better than to drag Waylon into it. After serving time with the Suicide Squad, Croc preferred to work alone and refused any help.
In a fierce struggle, Croc unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks, but Batwing fought back, slashing and stabbing in an attempt to subdue him. "I just wanted to talk!" he shouted, but Croc wasn't listening. Batwing understood that Croc's anger was overwhelming, and the only way to calm him down was with a heavy hit—a Superman Punch broke a few of Croc's teeth, momentarily stunning him.
Once Croc finally calmed down, he explained to Batwing, he was not working with the Riddler. Batwing suddenly got an idea. He decided to give Croc a head start to chase the Riddler while they waited for the GCPD to arrive.
"You want to chase Riddler?" Batwing suggested. "Just remember to stop when I say so." As Croc nodded in agreement, Batwing added, “You’re my get out of jail free card.” With that, the chase was on, a chance for both to settle old scores.
Fear State[]
During the Fear State tie-in event, Killer Croc, Firefly, Knockout, and Cheshire sought out Clayface to form a team to defend Alleytown. Basil, Waylon, and Selina arrived at the Gotham City Docks, ready to execute their plan.
Suddenly, a bomb exploded, throwing everything into chaos. In the ensuing battle, Clayface and Croc clashed with the Magistrate forces, allowing Selina to escape into the water. Croc urged Basil to retreat just before Valley detonated a grenade that blew Clayface apart.
Despite the destruction, the remaining allies regrouped and began repairing the damage, united in their mission to protect their home.
Batman: Legends of Gotham[]
Red Hood was on a mission to track down Bane when Killer Croc spotted him, furious over the destruction of his operation that had cost him millions. The two clashed in a fierce fight; Jason shot at Croc, but the bullets barely made an impact due to his tough hide. As the fight escalated, Red Hood realized he was outmatched. After a heated exchange, Croc decided to call it a day, choosing to settle their score another time. He snatched Jason up, intending to take him along, but they soon encountered Bane, ready for a fight. The tension was brewing, setting the stage for a showdown that neither of them could afford to ignore.
In the dimly lit Gotham sewer, Killer Croc confronted Red Hood. Finish the job, tell him no, Jason, give the French book to him while they chatted.

Ultimately, the villains succeeded in taking the doctor, who decided to quit since he knew it was only a matter of time before he had business to attend to, particularly with Poison Ivy.
Poison Ivy[]
After leaving the group, Croc returned to look for Ivy, sensing that something was wrong. He searched high and low, even exploring the sewers, until he stumbled upon an abandoned building. Inside, he found Ivy struggling to escape. However, they were confronted by a strange flower person who attacked Croc with an acid-like sting. As the building began to collapse around them, Ivy desperately tried to help Croc, and together they managed to escape just in time. With the danger behind them, they started making their way home, relieved to have made it out alive.
Ivy was busy looking for a cure, working in Croc's house. As Croc caught a whiff of something, he thought she was cooking barbecue. Ivy explained that she was actually working on a cure using toxic mushrooms. She checked the spores in his body, but nothing seemed to happen; it turned out he was immune to the Lamia mushroom due to his natural crocodilian immunity. Ivy then mentioned she needed his blood for her research, causing Croc to panic at the sight of the needle. His fear stemmed from a childhood trauma where he had to face doctors who never could get through his tough skin armor, and he vowed never to go to a doctor again.
Just then, a zombie-like creature stumbled upon Ivy. Croc instinctively moved to defend her, but before they could react, Solomon Grundy arrived, grabbing Ivy by the neck. Croc fought to free her, and a chaotic struggle ensued. Ivy eventually managed to stop them, reminding Croc that they had a much bigger problem to deal with. Together, they needed to confront the real threat looming over them.
They fought off the zombie-like creatures until they were finally defeated. Croc, exhausted from assisting Ivy with her antidote for days, checked on her and urged her to rest. Suddenly, they heard a scream—it was Janet. She panicked at the sight of Solomon Grundy and Killer Croc, but Ivy quickly reassured her they were friends.
Janet brought gifts, including a donut, which she offered to Croc. Ivy encouraged Croc to be friendly, and he happily took the donut, brightening the mood. Janet promised to return with more donuts later, bringing some lightness amidst the chaos.
vy was working to prevent a planet-wide zombie apocalypse when she suddenly received a distressing call from Janet. During the conversation, Ivy collapsed in agony, struggling to communicate that something was breaking loose. Her pain was overwhelming, and she screamed as blood seeped from her body. Croc and Janet rushed to help her, trying to stop the bleeding. Just then, a noise interrupted them as the Floronic Man, Waylon, arrived on the scene, ready to defend both Janet and Ivy.

Hearing Ivy yell Janet from HR rushes in front door. Janet was desperate to rescue Ivy, but the door was blocked by Croc, who insisted it was too dangerous outside with the swarm of plant zombies breaking down the door. Just then, Harley Quinn arrived, ready to save her lover and friends. Janet shouted for Harley’s help, but was told they had to focus on Ivy first. Croc stepped in, reminding Janet that they weren’t heroes in the traditional sense—they were simply protecting those they cared about, especially their closest friends and loved ones.
As they prepared to rescue Ivy, they encountered a man with a flower head, someone Janet recognized from weeks ago who had come to assist them against the Floronic Man. They fought their way through, with Croc determined to reach Ivy. However, when they finally found her, Ivy expressed a shocking wish not to be saved—she believed the only way to stop the madness was to sacrifice herself. After a fierce and chaotic confrontation, Harley found herself standing over Woodrue, grappling with the consequences of their actions. Croc urged Ivy to rest, but tragically, it was too late. The deed was done, and Jason Woodrue was dead, along with Ivy.
Croc, Solomon, and Janet were stunned to see Ivy dead. In a desperate move, Grundy carried her into the swamp, hoping to revive her. Harley, conflicted but determined, felt she had to do the right thing, even at a cost. Croc encouraged her not to give up. Suddenly, the swamp came alive, and Croc pointed out Ivy rising from the water. She was back, filling them with renewed hope. After the chaos, Croc needed to rest and offered Grundy a place to stay at his house to regroup and recover.
Titans Beast[]
Gotham City was overrun by beast people, and Croc was determined to defend the city. He managed to subdue one of them, but when he was hit with spores, he transformed into an even more feral crocodile beast. Nightwing spotted Croc and tried to reason with him, but the effects of the spores made it impossible. Just then, Wolf Batman swooped in to save Nightwing. Together, they fought against Croc, working to subdue him.
Red Hood: The Hill[]
Demetrius Korlee, Jr. had a major problem to deal with regarding the Red Hood and The Hill Watch Group, so he decided to head to a luxury apartment where he knew Killer Croc was staying. Demetrius brought a photo of the Red Hood, explaining that they needed to eliminate him. However, Croc, who knew the Red Hood better than Demetrius did, suggested hiring a special player named Kreckk.
Croc explained that Kreckk's real name was Leonard H. Kreckk, but everyone just called him Kreckk. He noted that Kreckk had changed after an incident at Arkham, where something significant happened to him. Croc revealed that if someone provided Lenny with a target, he could solve the problem permanently.
Croc then asked Demetrius if he knew Tony Flats, mentioning something about a phone recorder. After giving Demetrius a card number, they left to discuss their next steps.
All In[]
Poison Ivy[]
Janet was on a mission to uncover why Ivy from the Green Order of the Green Knight had yet to commit any crimes lately. Her investigation led her to the sewers, where she discovered a few clues that hinted at something unusual. As she pieced together the information, Corc, her companion, calmed her nerves, suggesting that it could just be some kids pulling pranks. Grateful for his support, Janet thanked him for being by her side during the investigation. Their connection deepened, and in a spontaneous moment, she leaned in and kissed him. They embraced each other tightly.
In Gotham City, Janet was determined to seek out Croc, hoping he could help her convince the Gotham City Police Department to arrest Ivy. Deep down, she felt responsible for some terrible events and wanted to make amends, but she knew she couldn't do it without Croc's assistance.
As they approached the police department, Croc was accompanied by members of the Order of the Green Knight and Peter Undine. They witnessed the police attempting to apprehend Ivy, but soon the scene became chaotic. Unfortunately, Waylon found himself overwhelmed by the sheer number of officers. Janet's instincts kicked in, and she wanted to rush in to save him, but Croc firmly instructed her to stay back. If she goes in there, they'll get her too.
Batman (2025)[]
Croc escaped from Arkham Tower and quickly spotted a truck full of meat. He slammed into it, devouring the meat before taking some with him. Meanwhile, Batman was in search of Croc, trying to locate him before the Gotham police department could find him first. Following a trail of meat, Batman deduced that Croc had recently been at the Gotham Natural History Museum. Upon arriving at the museum, the security guard reported that Croc was indeed inside. Batman, aware of Croc's volatile nature, chose not to use his gun, knowing it would only provoke him further. Instead, he stealthily entered the museum, readying his Bat-gauntlets for the confrontation. When Croc turned around and saw Batman, he roared fiercely. In that instance, fighting him Waylon not fighting him, was misunderstood. Batman took a moment to consider his approach, remembering Alfred's words about Croc having a childlike nature.
Deciding to take a different route, Batman initiated a friendly chat with Croc, attempting to connect with him instead of fighting. To his surprise, Croc responded positively, showing a desire for peace. As Arkham staff arrived to help Croc and prepare for his return, Waylon grabbed Batman’s attention one last time. With a hopeful expression, he offered Batman a dinosaur plush toy.
