The Killer Klowns are the titular main antagonists of the 1988 sci-fi/comedy horror film Killer Klowns from Outer Space and its 2024 video game adaptation.
They are a murderous and malicious race of alien beings that resemble colorful circus clowns. The clowns use a variety of strange, comical, and futuristic tools and weapons in order to secretly harvest humans for later consumption. This group consists of about 40 Killer Klowns.
Description[]
The Killer Klowns are a race of humanoid aliens who resemble typical circus clowns from Earth, sporting colorful baggy outfits, big poofy hairdos, white faces with brightly colored markings, and big red noses. Unlike real clowns, Killer Klowns are not in costumes or makeup; they naturally look the way they are. Their heads have noticeably exaggerated anatomy, appearing cartoonishly wider, taller, or more bulbous than a human head, and they all sport very wide grins full of crooked yellow teeth. Their hands resemble organic "Mickey Mouse" gloves and have three fingers with stubby pink nails.
The Klowns seem to have their own language and talk to each other frequently throughout the film, though it is untranslated and sounds like gibberish.
Weapons[]
- Cotton Candy Cocoon/Balloon Ray Guns - the main weapon of choice for Klowns, appearing as toy ray guns that fire a bright pink beam that instantly kills and seals humans in a cocoon of cotton candy, which later melts them down into a red liquid that the Klowns slurp up later through crazy straws. Another variety simply seals a person inside a giant balloon, keeping them alive for some unknown purpose. The balloons themselves still float despite their human captors, and are quite durable, only popping when shot with a handgun.
- Acid Pies - Thrown by the dozen at a security officer at the amusement park when the Klowns return to base. After being covered head to foot in pies, it's revealed that they were acidic, melting the officer down to a skeleton.
- Mallets - the Klown "Jumbo" attempted to lure a little girl out from the Big Top Burger restaurant while holding a big striped mallet behind his back. The mallet's never used as the girl's mother pulls her back to the table.
- Boxing Glove Arms - the Klown "Shorty" runs into a group of bikers while riding a little clown tricycle. After the bikers mock him and smash the tricycle, Shorty jumps into the air and lands back with a pair of red boxing gloves. The biker leader sarcastically asks "What are ya gonna do, knock my block off?" to which Shorty retorts by having his glove spring up from his arm, punching the biker's head clean off and into a nearby trash can.
- Popcorn Bazookas - A two-handed rifle-like weapon that fires a blast of popcorn like a shotgun. The popcorn itself seems to fly around corners like cartoon bullets before sticking to their target. The popcorn later grows into Klown Larva when they find someplace dark to hide in.
- Bloodhound–like balloon animals - A balloon animal on a leash that barks and moves like an actual dog, allowing the Klowns to sniff out and track Debbie and Mike after they escape the Klown's spaceship. It appears to be as durable as a normal balloon animal, as it is later run over and squashed by Mike's car.
- Party Horn Hand - Jumbo knocks out Officer Moony by blowing on an oversized party horn that unfurls to reveal the end is shaped like a hand, which grabs Moony around the neck and pulls him towards the door of the prison cell, banging his head on the bars.
- Melee Weapons - Near the end of the film, Debbie, Mike and Dave are cornered by several Klowns all wielding various bats, axes, and golf clubs, all colored with garish stripes and polka dots. These seem to have no special functions, simply being silly-looking but deadly weapons.
Personality[]
At first glance, the Killer Klowns appear aloof and clumsy, even friendly to others as they do various clownish acts like puppet shows and throwing pies. In actuality, the Klowns are sadistic psychopaths who delight in murder and mayhem, killing and tormenting people while laughing maniacally all the while. They have little fear of humans, and will gleefully take their time tormenting and taunting them before snagging them in a coccoon, or simply killing them for fun, such as when the Klown "Shorty" punches a random biker's head off with a springing boxing glove. The only time the Klowns communicate directly with humans is when the Klown "Jumbo" speaks to Officer Dave through Officer Mooney, telling him "Don't worry Dave- all we wanna do is kill you." This is further proof of the Klowns' cruelty, though Jumbo himself seems to be the most sadistic of the bunch.
Powers and Abilities[]
As well as wielding an arsenal of cartoonishly deadly weapons, the Klowns possess abilities that appear almost supernatural. They're shown to be able to teleport, squeeze into tiny spaces (such as inside a pizza box as well as the Klown car), leap several stories high, and produce various weapons and other objects from seemingly nowhere, "hammerspace" style. The Klown "Slim" is shown to have the ability to drive around an invisible car, pantomiming sitting and holding a steering wheel while two headlights hover in front of him. He also has the ability to create physically impossible shadow puppets, creating a rabbit, an elephant, and even George Washington crossing the Delaware River. These shadows appear harmless until Slim ends up creating a giant t-rex shadow with a glowing red eye, which devours a large group of people in one bite (What happened to the people afterwards is unclear, though it seems to be implied they were shrunken down and trapped in Slim's hands before he stuck them in his bag).
During his time at the police station, "Jumbo" is shown to be able to detach and regenerate his hands at will, as well as spin his head around a full 180 degrees and, though it's not shown, it's implied that Jumbo can also walk up walls and ceilings as shown by the colorful "footprints" he left behind. Perhaps the most gruesome ability the Klowns display is the ability to puppet a human corpse like a ventriloquist dummy by sticking their hand through the back of the body. This was the fate of Officer Mooney, who was used by Jumbo to taunt Officer Dave before being tossed aside. To add further insult to injury, Jumbo decorated Mooney's face with two bloody thumbprints on his cheeks and two lines of blood trailing down the sides of his mouth. adding to the "ventriloquist dummy" look.
The bodies of the Klowns themselves are extremely durable, able to shrug off bullets and blows to the head without issue. Their only weak point are their big red noses; when shot or pierced, their nose pops like a balloon, causing the Klown to spin around in place before exploding in a shower of glowing confetti.
Biography[]
In the sleepy American town of Crescent Cove, California on a Friday night a large circus tent-like spaceship (which first appears to be an orange comet), lands in a nearby forest. The clowns leave the spaceship and start a gruesome "harvest" of humans though out the town via an array of wacky yet lethal devices such as ray guns that encase people in cotton candy (which kills people in cotton candy), shadow clown-puppets, acid pies, and other, even more other bizarre weapons and gadgets. In the early part of their rampage, one Killer Klown used a Tyrannosaurus shadow puppet that swallowed a group of humans and turned them into popcorn kernels and one of the small Killer Klowns used a cotton candy gun to trap a girl inside a cotton candy cocoon.
They also kidnapped Debbie inside a balloon rather than trapping her in cotton candy or turning her into a popcorn kernel. Later on, 2 female Killer Klowns were seen, which explains that the male Killer Klowns are trapping female humans inside balloons to turn them into female Killer Klowns.
The Killer Klowns live up to their name and go on a mindless rampage of death and destruction until their weakness is finally exposed: their bulbous red noses - by hitting their noses, the Klowns are killed. Thus, the main heroes of the film (Mike Tobacco, Debbie Stone, Officer Dave Hanson, and the Terenzi Brothers) started to fight back against the murderous invaders.
However, one of the heroes named Debbie Stone is kidnapped by the Klowns. When Mike Tobacco and Officer Dave Hanson enter the spaceship to rescue her (which at that point had moved on to another area closer to town), they discover that one of the reasons that the Klowns are attacking is so that they can drink the blood of their victims.
Debbie is rescued by Mike and Officer Dave Hanson and the film climaxes in the ship's main room called "Klown Kathedral", surrounded by the Klowns, with a showdown between the heroes and Klownzilla - a 20 ft tall Klown and leader of the Killer Klowns, despite his obvious advantage. Klownzilla is defeated when police Officer Hanson uses his police badge to burst the Klown's nose - which causes Klownzilla and the Klowns' space-ship, which begins to coil in and spin like a top before lifting off the ground to leave Earth, to explode.
Having escaped to the authorities who had gathered outside the amusement park, Mike and Debbie briefly mourn their friends' loss until the Klowns' miniature car drops out of the sky. Dave is alive and they all embrace before Paul and Rich appear from the back of the car themselves, having hidden in the ice cream coolers to avoid the explosion. Debbie then asks if its over and pies fly down and hit them both in the face to the sound of the Klowns' laughter.
Miraculously, despite this, the heroes manage to survive the explosion - it is unknown if there is an entire planet of killer Klowns out there or if these are the only ones but it is safe to assume that these bizarre creatures will not be terrorizing Earth anytime soon following their defeat, seeing is that they are now weaponless.

Trivia[]
- The clowns had two different head models, one still head with motors that controlled eye blinking, and another head with movable face features that was operated by puppeteers in close-up scenes.
- Due to the rock band The Dickies performing the film's theme song, it was featured as one of the songs on their international tour, this in turn brought knowledge of the film along with it, and helped the film gain massive foreign box office earnings, which accounted for almost half of the film's revenue.
- On October 22, 2018, it was announced that SyFy was in talks to acquire the rights to Killer Klowns from Outer Space and the Critters franchise in order to produce new sequels to both properties.
